NMITA Educational Activities
The following earth science and paleontology teaching activities have been developed to facilitate use of the biotic databases and the internet for teaching purposes. Some exercises were developed as lab activities for classes offered at the University of Iowa, whereas others are designed to accompany virtual field trips and museum visits. Each activity is linked to resources on other web pages and is flexibly organized. Guiding questions or activities accompany the exercises, and these may be printed and distributed to a class and/or modified to meet individual needs. These activities assume that the user is familiar with computers and knows how to access the WWW.

1. What jobs are available for archaeologists?
Professional archaeologists work for universities, colleges, museums, the federal government, state governments, in private companies, and as consultants. They teach, conduct field investigations, analyze artifacts and sites, and publish the results of their research. The minimal educational requirement to work as a field archaeologist is a B.A. or B.S. degree with a major in anthropology or archaeology and previous field experience (usually obtained by spending a summer in an archaeological field school or participating as a volunteer, see question 5). While this is sufficient to work on an archaeological field crew, it is not sufficient to move into supervisory roles. Supervisory positions require a graduate degree, either an M.A./M.S. or a Ph.D.

This paper outlines the Teaching History of Geology in Portugal. Scarce records in medieval times do not give any information on wether Geosciences were taught at all. In Renaissance mineral substances were mentioned in well known treatises by Garcia de Orta and Amato Lusitano but were restricted to their applications in Medicine. King Manuel I established a chair on Natural Philosophy at the University of Lisbon but it is not known if geological subjects were included in the sylabuses. Spreading of scientific knowledge including that of Geological Sciences was given a burst with the magnificent treatise by the Oratorian, Teodoro de Almeida (1762). The teaching of Natural History was undertaken by D. Vandelli, an Italian Professor and author of the first textbook in this field in Portugal (1788), comprising a brief chapter in Mineralogy. Vandelli and Coimbra University taught several naturalists that became remarkable as Professors and Researchers. Some of them gave an important contribution to the scientific knowledge from India and Africa to Brazil. The Royal Museum of Ajuda, created in 1772, had an important role in the teaching and divulging of Natural History. This in spite of a proposal of the Director D. Vandelli which was turned down, to create a Professorship in order to put to use its collections Botanical Garden and Chemical Laboratory.

Cretaceous Period Research
The demise of the dinosaurs, along with the changes in local paleoenvironments, are just a couple of areas in which the Paleontology Department has been conducting research over the past decade. This research is conducted in the intermittent barren landscapes of the Little Missouri Badlands in southwest North Dakota. These badlands represent the latest Cretaceous Period, which was home to the dinosaurs, giant marina reptiles, and extinct exotic plants. Research teams associated with the museum have been working in these ancient environments collecting fossils of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants to try to reassemble what was present 65 million years ago. As a result of these studies, clues are emerging in regards to how the plants and animals are interacting, how abundant they were and what was present at the time of the meteor impact. The fossil remains of these plants and animals are brought back to our museum where they are prepared, curated and studied. Displays depicting the results of our findings are presented to the general public in our museum. Research results have been published by the museum staff, and with collaborators in leading scientific journals. Collecting a microsite from the surface Removing soil from on top of a dinosaur site The museum also studies, collects and curates fossils from all of the different aged outcrops present in the region. These include vertebrates, invertebrates and plants from 73 million year old marine deposits up to the latest deposits of the area, which are 28 million years old. Some of the animals that have been found are mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, dinosaurs, and early mammals that include camels, rhinoceroses, horses and giant pigs.

    The Dragons are singing Tonight is a wonderful compilation of poems about dragons written by Jack Prelutsky. The poems are great to read aloud, and even very young children will get a kick out of the fast pace of many of the poems. Additionally, Sis's illustrations are beautiful and mysterious. I had my class oohing and aahing everytime I turned a page. This book stresses that it is fun having an imagination and that dragons have feelings too!
