Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as Japan's private sector continues to invest in these countries and more development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999 the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund (SPINF) implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which aimed to promote understanding of Japan within the region. This year, as the second phase of its efforts, SPINF launched this new project.
In conjunction with the second Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting (PALM 2000), which was organized by the Japanese government and held on April 22, SPINF invited eight journalists from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga to Japan. These journalists later wrote feature articles that were carried in local newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, and posted on the Internet. SPINF also sent three newspaper and television reporters from Miyakojima and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture to Palau in March 2001. These journalists interviewed the nation's new president and gathered material on a wide range of subjects, including environmental problems, the activities of Okinawans living in Palau, the island nation's traditional culture, and the current state of education. Upon returning to Japan, they produced features on Palau.

    Battle Palau
US Department Of State Post Report Peleliu and Angaur are historic World War II battle sites. Even today, tanks, airplanes, gun emplacements and other relics of the war are still standing where they were 60 years ago. The extensive cave system used by Japanese soldiers can also be explored. ... How and when the Palauan Islands were first settled is uncertain. Perhaps about 10,000 years ago, people moved into the Micronesian islands from what is now Indonesia and the Philippines. The first permanent settlements, however, may not have been before 500 A.D. The first extended contact with Western civilization occurred in 1783 when the British vessel ‘Antelope’ shipwrecked near Koror. Outside important trade routes, Palau was generally left alone until Spain formalized claims to Palau in 1885. In 1899 Germany purchased most of Spain's Micronesian island chains in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. Germany lost possession to Japan in 1914. The League of Nations formally extended Japan's mandate in 1920. During World War II, on September 15, 1944, U.S. forces landed on the Palauan islands of Peleliu and Angaur where they fought one of the memorable battles of the Pacific war. In 1945 control of Pa ... [

In 1900, Germany controls the vast majority of the region, including the Marshall, Caroline, and Northern Mariana Islands as well as Belau and Nauru. Britain holds a protectorate over Kiribati, which later becomes a formal colony, while the United States has political authority over Guam. The presence of larger numbers of Westerners and the continuing activities of Christian missionaries have an increasingly profound impact on many Micronesian cultural and artistic traditions Of all the cultural regions of the Pacific, Micronesia is the most severely impacted by World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Allied and Japanese forces fight many of the major battles of the Pacific campaign on Micronesian islands. These include Tarawa in Kiribati, Chuuk (then known as Truk) in the Caroline Islands, Peleliu in Belau, and Saipan in the Mariana Islands. In 1945, the aircraft Enola Gay takes off from Tinian in the Marianas to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After the Allied victory, control of Japan's Micronesian possessions is transferred to the United States, which administers them as a Trust Territory. In 1946, the U.S. begins the first in a series of nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands when it detonates an atomic bomb on Bikini Atoll. The testing program ends in 1958.
