South Asian American Studies A Working Bibliography 1975-1994
Rosane Rocher
A collection of essays, The Asian American: The Historical Experience , edited by Norris Hundley in 1976, included an article originally published by Gary R. Hess in the Pacific Historical Review As a bibliography developed for a course in which a majority of enrolled students were born of post-1965 immigrants from India in the United States, this selection of titles differs in some respects from that in South Asians in North America: An Annotated and Selected Bibliography edited by Jane Singh and others at the Center for South and Southeast Asia Studies, University of California, Berkeley, in 1988. The original occasion for Singh's bibliography was the cataloguing of a library collection on the Gadar Party, an organization founded in 1913 by immigrants from the Indian subcontinent on the West Coast of the United States and Canada in support of India's struggle for independence. The difference in focus is reflected in the title: whereas South Asians in North America evokes South Asian sojourners on alien American soiland includes items dealing with visitors to North America such as Vivekananda, the present bibliography places the South Asian American experience within the context of an Asian American ethnicity. It is the premise of the course for which this bibliography was developed that the experience of Americans of South Asian origin is best studied in the light, not only of a global South Asian diaspora, but also of the shared experiences of successive generations of Americans of Asian ethnicity. Differently from the focus indicated in the subheadings "The Immigrant Experience, 1900-1946" and "The Immigrant Experience, 1947-1986" in

Who Exactly Is An Asian-American? by Steve Sailer UPI , July 11, 2002 Who exactly is an "Asian-American?" The U.S. government's official racial definition is coming in for criticism as being both too narrow (because it leaves out West Asians, such as Arabs, Israelis, and Iranians) and too broad (because it clumps together the East Asians of China and the Philippines with the quite different South Asians of India and Pakistan). The central issue is the status of South Asians. Currently, the government brackets South Asians with East Asians in an artificial race called "Asian," rather than grouping South Asians alongside West Asians in the Caucasian category. Because the number of South Asians in America is growing so fast (the 2000 Census found there are now twice as many Asian Indians as Japanese), and because they tend to be highly articulate and influential, this is a question of more than academic interest. According to the U.S. government's official racial classification rules, the westernmost 2,400 miles of Asia don't count as "Asian." Even if you are from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, or Afghanistan which are all Asian countries according to the universally accepted geographic definition of the continent you can't be an "Asian-American" in the eyes of the federal government. Americans with roots in these countries are classified instead as "white" or "Caucasian," and thus are not a legally protected minority.

Armenians, for instance, are geographically Asian but racially Caucasian. In fact, Armenia is on the southern, or Asian, side of the Caucasus mountain range that is one of the boundaries between Europe and Asia. Peter Abajian, director of the West Region of the Armenian Assembly of America, recalled with a laugh, "At the University of Michigan, I immediately checked off 'Asian' on my financial aid form thinking it would give me an edge with my Pell Grant and loan stuff. No such luck!" Yet, that border, which U.S. bureaucrats have designated a major global racial boundary, is actually one of the most porous in the world, as American soldiers have found out to their frustration in trying to track down Taliban fighters. Many of the Pashtun tribesmen who made up the bulk of the Taliban stole away over the mountains and melted into the villages of their Pashtun relatives in Pakistan.

Students who identify as Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Bahais and with other non-Christian religions felt targeted as "unAmerican." But UC Davis students, who had been working together in coalitions since the 1980s, found a way to stand together. They joined with faculty members to transform a fledgling Middle East program into a combined vision with South Asian studies. The resulting student/faculty coalition has triggered a major new thrust in research and education at UC Davis called the Middle East/South Asia Studies Program.

ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES ANTAGONIZING CHINA OVER NMD
(New 6/20/01.) lobal peace and prosperity depends to a remarkable degree on robust exchanges between the world's richest nation and the world's most populous. Considering that fact, the leaders in Washinton D.C. and Beijing have been either tragically star-crossed or remarkably cavalier about provoking confrontation.
In 1996 Beijing fired a pair of ballistic missiles across the Taiwan Strait under the pretext of "military exercises", prompting the U.S. to send a carrier battle group in response. In 1999 the U.S. bombed the Chinese embassy in Kosovo and ascribed it to an intelligence error.
In mid 2000 the two nations seemed about to put the bad blood behind them when President Clinton struck a deal for U.S. approval of China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Then George Bush vowed to commit untold billions to building a space-based national missile defense (NMD) system to detect and destroy ballistic missiles that might threaten the U.S. A clear effort at upsetting the global balance of power, charged Beijing, vowing to commit whatever resources necessary to counter NMD. Its predictably harsh and intransigent stance toward a crippled U.S. spy plane forced to land on Hainan Island produced another standoff which, for several tense days, seemed capable of triggering a shooting war.
What American wouldn't want a shield from foreign ballistic missiles? But the NMD is hardly a sure thing. It's premised on technology that won't exist for a decade or more. It will end up costing well over $100 billion dollars. Meanwhile its mere existence on drawing boards sours relations with China, Russia and other nations. At present all it guarantees is another arms race. The only way it makes strategic sense is as a means to bankrupt a nascent geopolitical rival by forcing it into an arms race it can't afford. Look at what the nuclear arms race did to Russia.

On November 2, 2004, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), with the help of several co-sponsoring organizations and 1,200 attorneys, law students, and volunteers, conducted the nation's largest nonpartisan, multilingual exit poll of almost 11,000 Asian American voters. The questionnaire was written in 8 languages, and Asian Americans were surveyed in 23 cities in 8 states: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The five largest Asian groups surveyed in 2004 were Chinese (46%), South Asian (25%), Korean (14%), Southeast Asian (6%), and Filipino (5%).2 82% were foreign born. 29% had no formal U.S. education. More than a third (38%) were first-time voters. Asian Americans were largely Democratic voters.
Almost 60% of Asian Americans were registered Democrats, over a quarter were not enrolled in any political party, and only 1 in 7 Asian Americans were registered Republicans. By a 3 to 1 margin, Asian Americans favored Senator John Kerry over President George W. Bush, 74% to 24%, with 2% voting for other candidates. Among first-time Asian American voters, 78% voted for Kerry, 20% voted for Bush, and 2% voted for other candidates. Party crossover voting favored Democrats.
