    How to Cover Asian America
    Addendum

Edited by Tony Ramirez ASIA : Asia is more than 17 million square miles, the eastern four-fifths of the Eurasian landmass. The word "Asia" may be derived from the ancient Assyrian word "asu," meaning " to rise," as in the sun, and by extension, the east. The classical Greeks thought of everything to the east of Greece as Asia. Europeans have demarcated Asia similarly ever since, hence the Orient (from the Latin for "the direction of the rising sun" ), "Asia Minor" for Turkey, and the "Middle East" for such countries as Egypt and Saudi Arabia. East Asia has thus traditionally referred to China, Japan and Korea; Southeast Asia such countries as Vietnam and Thailand; and South Asia such countries as India and Pakistan. Similarly, Central Asia has referred to Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, all former Soviet republics. Afghanistan is sometimes included in this group. But see ASIAN. The United States Census Bureau uses the federal government's definitions of race when performing a census . These definitions have and may change between each census. The racial categories are officially described as follows:¹
The categories represent a social-political construct designed for collecting data on the race and ethnicity of broad population groups in this country, and are not anthropologically or scientifically based.
Racial classification in the census was based solely on self-identification and, for the first time, did not pre-suppose disjointness:
The question on race asked respondents to report the race or races they considered themselves to be. Both questions are based on self-identification.
Nearly seven million Americans identified themselves as members of more than one race in the census.

Is it time to test your memory? - Smarts - Brief Article Entrepreneur June, 2002 by Gisela M. Pedroza

WITH ALMOST 12 MILLION people in the United States, Asians accounted for $254 billion in purchasing power in 2001, have the highest rate of education, and boast incomes exceeding those of Caucasians by more than $10,000 per household. Still, businesses consistently overlook them. Big mistake. Not only have Asians become one of the nation's most attractive demographics, but their population is also growing at a rate of 49 percent, with the Vietnamese and Indian populations growing the fastest. Companies like Real Cosmetics are taking note. "There's really a need in the Nordstroms, Macy's and Sephoras of the world for a product that reaches a diverse range," says Lubna Khalid, 28, a Pakistani American ex-model who started her line of cosmetics for Asian and other minority women in 1999. Real Cosmetics launched its high-end cosmetics line in two East Coast Nordstroms in March and expects 2002 sales to exceed $150,000.

Hubert Vo's strong showing against entrenched state Rep. Talmadge Heflin in Tuesday's election is the latest evidence of the rise of Asian-Americans in Harris County politics since 1994, the year state Rep. Martha Wong was elected to Houston City Council. Vo won by a handful of votes Tuesday, but it will be at least today, when absentee and provisional votes are counted, before the final outcome of that race is known. Vo, a Vietnamese immigrant, would be the second Asian-American in the state House, joining Wong, R-Houston, a Chinese-American elected in 2002 and re-elected Tuesday. Two Asian-Americans — Gordon Quan and M.J. Khan — sit on the Houston City Council. Quan is from China, and Khan is from Pakistan. Besides holding office, Asian-Americans have become more active in the area's political parties, with five Asian-Americans from Harris County attending the Democratic National Convention earlier this year — about 10 percent of the county's delegates. Asian-Americans also worked in Republican campaigns, though none from here attended the national convention. "These immigrants are ... becoming players in our political system," said Nestor Rodriguez, a professor at the University of Houston. "They come from the smallest of the four major racial and ethnic groups in the Houston area. ... It speaks to their ability to enter the political system, become sophisticated, draw support and become part of the political mainstream."

...Despite the political popularity of the testing "solution," many educators and civil rights advocates are suggesting that it has actually exacerbated... June 5, 2000 Press Release The most dramatic growth over the 1990s has occurred outside the City of Boston, according to the UMass-Boston researchers. While Boston saw the largest numeric increase in the Asian American population (13,896), towns posting the fastest growth rates were Malden, Shrewsbury, Quincy, Burlington, and Waltham. Within this fast growing population, the study reveals, are 15 Asian ethnic subgroups that have at least 500 members in metro Boston, led by the Chinese (almost 78,500), Indians (over 41,000), and Vietnamese (over 31,500). Other groups include Cambodians, Koreans, Japanese, Filipinos, Laotian, Thai, Pakistani, and Hmong. Settlement patterns among Asian ethnic subgroups are strikingly varied. While the Chinese are heavily concentrated in Boston, Quincy, and Malden, Cambodians are centered in Lowell with sizable shares in Lynn, Fall River, and Revere. The Hmong have its greatest numbers in Fitchburg, while Indians are the most populous Asian ethnic group in Waltham, Framingham, Burlington, and Shrewsbury.

Asian American Voices for Affirmative Action by Paul Rockwell
    Oakland, California
In a flip remark last June, University of California (UC) Regents Ward Connerly said: "I would be quite comfortable with only white and Asian students at UC, I have no problem with that."
It was Henry Der, Chair of Chinese for Affirmative Action who took Connerly and Pete Wilson to task. In his eloquent address to the UC Regents, August 20th, Der said: "If Asian American students were to attend certain UC campuses that are exclusively Asian and white, such segregated education would not prepare Asian American students to assume leadership positions in a multiracial California society. As a parent, I do not want any of my three children to experience or choose a segregated college education."
Pete Wilson's attempt to foment hostility between Asian American and African American communities has already backfired. Asian American support for affirmative action is growing. Throughout California's communities of color there is an awakened sense that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Filipinos for Affirmative Action, the Asian Law Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance; Kimi Lee, Executive Director of tbe University of California Student Association; and Eddie Wong, Western Region Rainbow Coalition Director, are playing an active role in defending affirmative action for America.

World Trade Center and Pentagon Attacks: The Anti-Asian American Backlash
Compiled by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund Partial list of reported incidents as of October 5, 2001. For more information or to report an incident, please call 212-760-9110 or 212-966-5932 or sling@aaldef.org or email legal@aaldef.org The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) sends our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Washington, and Pennsylvania. We condemn these acts of terrorist violence against innocent people. We also are concerned about reports of harassment, intimidation and violence against South Asian Americans, particularly Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sikhs, and other Indians in New York City. We call on all New Yorkers and all Americans to speak out against the backlash that has targeted law-abiding South Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities and individuals. The list below contains summary information about incidents of anti-Asian American violence, as reported to AALDEF staff, volunteers, and cooperating attorneys. It is current as of the afternoon of October 5, 2001. It reflects 78 incidents from 18 states and the District of Columbia, and includes 47 incidents from the New York/New Jersey area alone. Other agencies are also collecting anti-Asian American hate crime statistics, so this list should not be considered a complete catalogue of all anti-Asian American hate crimes since the September 11th bombings. Also, while some of the more serious incidents, such as the killings in Texas, Long Island, and Arizona, have been reported in the mainstream press, the list below includes reports of vandalism, assault, and other serious crimes that have not yet received widespread press attention.
