Sound-alike matching According to the 2000 U.S. census, Asian Americans make up 4.3% of the total U.S. population that's about 12 million people who identify themselves as at least part Asian. However, this number represents an increase of 63% from the 1990 census, making Asian Americans the fastest growing of all the major racial/ethnic groups in the U.S., in terms of percentage growth. But in so many ways, the presence of Asian Americans is much more prominent than even these numbers suggest.

Turmoil in South Asia and a Recession at Home Have Left the Region's Powerful Indian and Pakistani Communities, Which Flocked to the Tech Sector over the Last 10 Years, in an Unfamiliar Position: Vulnerable. Leaders Hope the Challenges Will Lead to a New Vitality.
by Josh Kurlantzick PHOTOGRAPHS BY FORREST MacCORMACK
NATIONAL PASTIME: PAKISTANI-BORN FARAZ HAIDER (LEFT) AND INDIAN-BORN ASHOK MUDUKUTORE PLAY TOGETHER IN THE WASHINGTON CRICKET LEAGUE. BUT TENSIONS BETWEEN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES ARE CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR IMMIGRANTS HERE. Ashok Mudukutore, an Indian-born software developer for Cisco Systems and key player for the Washington Cricket League's Fairfax club, is worried about a lot of things this season, which runs from late spring to early fall. He's worried about when to hold practices, how to structure the team, and where to place extra players - familiar burdens to any after-work team captain. But this year, Mudukutore has much bigger challenges than he's faced in past seasons: political and economic turmoil. In recent months, India and Pakistan teetered on the brink of a war that some worry could go nuclear, terrorists attacked the United States, and the technology sector wallowed in recession - all of which weigh heavily on Mudukutore's Indian and Pakistani-American cricket-playing colleagues. For a community that was economically powerful and politically confidant just a little more than a year ago, these are unsettling times. Washington's powerful South Asian-American business community finds itself in an unfamiliar position of groping for new capital, new ideas, and new jobs.

South Asian Americans
By: Ryan Minato, Research Analyst Immigration Waves

Although, the first South Asians came in the 1790s, there were only 523 South Asians in North America in 1898. Between 1899-1913 the first immigration wave brought nearly 7,000 South Asians. These early pioneers were primarily Sikh farmers from the Punjab region who came to California and the Pacific Northwest to work the fields when white nativist hysteria excluded immigration from China, Japan, and Korea. South Asians, however, soon faced significant opposition from organized labor who petitioned to stop immigration from Asia altogether. Under such hostility, many left and by 1940 the number of South Asians decreased significantly, with approximately 2,400 remaining in the U.S.
World War II marked a second immigration wave and public support for South Asians increased as the prospect of India’s independence came closer to reality. In 1946, the Luce-Celler bill lifted the ban on South Asian immigration. By 1947, Mahatma Gandhi and the people of South Asia put an end to British colonialism, and many students came to the U.S. to study.
The third and largest wave came after the 1965 Immigration Act. Before 1965, approximately 12,000 South Asians lived in the U.S. By 1990, the South Asian American population was 919,626 or a

Pakistani-born painter Shahzia Sikander is a breakout South Asian star
By By Barbara Kantrowitz and Julie Scelfo Newsweek March 22 issue - Six floors above Times Square, in a bare rehearsal studio, the sun is rising on Bombay. At the center of the room, a slender middle-aged woman chants softly. She's surrounded by two dozen young performers playing beggars and peddlers who rise from slumber in the intricate ballet of an urban morning scene. Their dance moves become ever more energetic as the pianist in the corner pounds harder on the keys. The woman is Madhur Jaffrey, the actress and cookbook author who has made a career of introducing the tastes of her native India to the West. But this time she is serving up an enticing mix of Indian and Western rhythms called "Bombay Dreams," a Broadway musical that Andrew Lloyd Weber and his creative team hope will hook mainstream America when the show opens next month. RELATED STORY Profiles: Powerful and Influential South Asians The stars of this breakout generation include directors like M. Night Shyamalan, 33 ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs"), and artists like the critically acclaimed Pakistani-born painter Shahzia Sikander, 34. Or writers like Jhumpa Lahiri, 36, the Pulitzer Prize winner whose recent novel about a second-generation Indian-American, "The Namesake," shared the best-seller lists with "The Da Vinci Code." Or bankers like Anshu Jain, 41, raised in India but now head of global markets and a member of Deutsche Bank's group executive committee in New York. Or politicians like 32-year-old Bobby Jindal, who last fall narrowly missed election as governor of Louisiana and is now running for Congress.

April 28, 2005 Eric Johnson, Station Manager
New Jersey 101.5 FM Radio
P.O. Box 5698
Trenton, NJ 08638 Dear Mr. Johnson: We believe that political commentary plays an important role in shaping the views and opinions of the public. However, when such commentary is tinged with racial and ethnic stereotyping, it crosses the line. It exacerbates preconceived (and obviously untrue) notions of South Asians and Asians as outsiders, and can often provide justification for overt acts of prejudice in the form of employment discrimination, bias and hate-motivated violence. We urge you to immediately take the following actions in response:
The state of New Jersey, with its diverse demographic population, provides tremendous opportunities for coalition-building among the various communities that reside there. For example, in the state of New Jersey, there are approximately 225,000 individuals of South Asian descent who trace their heritage to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal among other nations. 101.5 FM, as a public broadcasting station that has thousands of listeners, can do much to build understanding among communities in New Jersey.

South Asian Americans Organize Tsunami Relief Efforts
(Private American relief agencies report millions of dollars in donations)
By Edmund F. Scherr
Washington File Special Correspondent

Washington South Asian communities across the United States are mobilizing resources to help fund relief efforts in the wake of the December 26 tsunami that devastated coastal areas of countries throughout the region and to support those who have lost friends and family members in the disaster.
American-based private relief organizations report being overwhelmed by donations and offers of help.
The United States has several large concentrations of immigrants from the affected nations and thousands of American-born citizens with ties to that region.
Southern California has well over 100,000 immigrants from the nations hit by the tsunami, and the San Francisco area has thousands of immigrants from India and Sri Lanka. California is also home to about half of America's 70,000-strong Indonesian immigrant community.
Chicago has an estimated 120,000 residents of Indian descent, and there are large numbers of South Asian immigrants in the New York, Detroit and Washington metropolitan areas.

Anti-Asian Voter Discrimination in 2004 Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the federal Voting Rights Act earlier this month, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), a 31-year old civil rights organization, released a new report outlining an array of voting obstacles encountered by Asian American in the November 2004 Presidential Election. AALDEF's new report, Asian American Access to Democracy in the 2004 Elections, documents violations of the Voting Rights Act and Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and other incidents of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement in 23 cities in 8 states: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. On Nov. 2, 2004, with the help of more than 1,200 volunteers, AALDEF monitored almost 200 poll sites and conducted a multilingual survey of 11,000 Asian American voters. AALDEF received more than 600 complaints of voting barriers. AALDEF executive director Margaret Fung said, "In the 2004 elections, Asian Americans faced an array of barriers that prevented them from exercising their right to vote." These included:
