Saying Sayonara to Asian America
Sadanand Dhume E veryone has a pet indulgence. Mine is an on-again off-again addiction to the South Asian Journalists Association discussion list, home to a motley collection of journalists, academics, activists and nuts who submit to a daily barrage of junk email without having the excuse of living in boring old Princeton, New Jersey with a high speed Internet connection. The SAJA list has witnessed some of the most momentous Indian American debates of our times. Did Madonna insult Hindu culture by wearing a bindi ? Should Taco Bell be sued for feeding a pious Hindu a beef burrito when he asked for a bean burrito? Should fat white women in Queens be allowed to use mehndi ? Ever so rarely, along comes an Indian American political issue that rises above the din of outrage over insulted gods and stolen customs. My favourite is the debate over Indians and the Asian American movement. A small but vocal minority of Indian Americans wants our relatively young community to become part of the well-entrenched, well-funded Asian American movement. They argue that piggybacking allows Indians to use Asian American cultural and legal institutions, freeing scarce resources for other activities (such as protesting mehndi abuse.) They say the political clout of 10 million Asian Americans added to 1.1 million Indians will help us further our shared interests in immigration policy, prevention of hate crimes and stereotyping by the mainstream media. Some insist that Indians have no choice but to join the Asian American movement simply because hold your breath the United States census counts Indians as Asians.

Understanding our perceptions of Asian-Americans
By Peter N. Kiang, Ed. D.
University of Massachusetts at Boston
A waitress asked: "Where are you from?" I told her my great-grandfather came to work the mines in New Mexico. My grandfather was a tailor in Oakland and my mother was born in Stockton. And the waitress interrupted and without any hesitation said: "So how do you like your new country?" - a Chinese-American attorney He asked the price of beef. Then he said: "You Koreans charge too much." My brother said: "I'm not Korean, I'm Cambodian." But he's mad. He says: "You Koreans rip us off." - a Cambodian-born store owner The growth and diversification of the Asian-American population in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Driven by sustained immigration and refugee resettlement during the 1970s and 1980s, Asian-Americans have emerged as the nation's fastest growing racial group. Given that the school-age Asian-American population doubled in the 1980s and is expected to double again between 1990 and 2020, our schools and the larger society must confront some critical questions. For example, what do we know and what can we teach and learn about Asian-Americans? Asian-Americans number more than 9.1 million in the United States and represent more than 30 different nationalities and ethnic groups, including Samoan, Tongan, Guamanian and native Hawaiian from the Pacific Islands; Lao, Hmong, Mien, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Burmese, Malay and Filipinos from Southeast Asia; Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian and Sri Lankan from South Asia; Afghani and Iranian from Central Asia; and Korean, Japanese and Chinese from East Asia. In the year 2000, the six largest Asian nationalities in the United States were Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Asian Indians and Japanese. The diversity of Asian-Americans, in terms of their various languages, cultures and histories, is remarkable.

A Glance at the South Asian Population in the State of Georgia
By Manav Tanneeru The South Asian population in Metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia has grown exponentially over the last decade, according to an analysis of statistics reported by the 2000 Census and various other reports by experts and organizations. The South Asian demographic is traditionally defined as being comprised of the various nations found on the Subcontinent, which include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The growth in population has made the demographic economically viable and a force in the local community, analysts said. Asian-Americans in the United States
The nationwide growth rate for the Asian-American population -– which does not distinguish between the various sub-sets of Asian demographics and includes both East Asians and South Asians –- as reported by the U.S. Census in 2000 stood at 48.26 percent, according to a study by the Indian-American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA). The Asian-American population in the United States grew from 7.5 million to slightly above 10 million over the last decade, the IACPA study said.

So, if all is even b/w Bush and Kerry on issues like war and patriotic act, the thinking is that bush is at least close with Pakistan.

Cineaste Publishers Inc. Used in the UCB Media Resources Web site with permission. What is Asian American Cinema, anyway?" The question came from a colleague in the discussion group that had formed to discuss a film and video series I had programmed for the Institute for Cinema and Culture at the University of Iowa, and the question was directed at me. "What are you going to say in your article," asked the filmmakers who knew I was attempting to answer this question. "How are you defining Asian American Cinema?," asked my friends on other campuses, themselves struggling to answer the same question. "I don't know," I replied. "The only thing I do know is that my students are helping me to redefine 'Asian American Cinema' every week, and I'm sure that any answer I give today I will abandon before the end of the semester." The term 'Asian American Cinema,' which includes works in video and film, implies first of all that there is such a thing as Asian American Culture. But is there such a thing as a unified Asian American Culture? Of course, the term culture is itself a slippery one - is there such a thing as American Culture, for example? Europeans might say yes; many Americans, especially people of color, would say no.

Diplomatic protests at DHS orders against Pakistani-Americans
The recent orders from the USA Department of Homeland Security to its immigration inspectors to give "special" scrutiny at borders and ports to arriving Pakistanis and Pakistani-Americans, including citizens of the USA of Pakistani "descent" like me (my mother was a child of American expatriates born in what is now Pakistan), continues to draw little comment in mainstream USA news and opinion media despite growing diplomatic protest from Pakistan, the first signs of objection from a member of Congress, and front-page coverage in South Asian-American publications. The DHS order appears to be in flagrant violation of USA laws against government discrimination between classes of USA citizens on the basis of national origin. And one legal scholar I asked about it responded immediately that the inclusion of descendants, on the basis of ancestry, sounded like "corruption of blood", a feudal and common-law concept which was explicitly banned by the USA Constitution. ("No attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture, except during the life of the person attainted.")

UCLA South Asian History Professor Vinay Lal. By Ji Hyun Lim With the rise in hate crimes against Pakistani and Indian Americans, in particular Sikhs, some University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) students have felt a sense of urgency to build a South Asian center on campus, and to establish a South Asian studies department. The Sept. 11 events highlighted how little Americans know about the region of South Asia, said UCLA student Kriththika Vasudevan. People have targeted Sikhs mainly because they think the men, who wear turbans, resemble Osama bin Laden. Concerned that a delay would be detrimental to the momentum already generated by the South Asian studies task force, students, who represents some 1,000 South Asians on campus, presented their arguments for the center to Chancellor Arthur Carnesdale last Friday. Administrators are currently evaluating the proposal. The initial push for the center and department came in December 2000, after a group of South Asian students voiced discontent with the lack of classes addressing their history and perspectives. A dozen or so of them met with Professor Vinay Lal and Professor Damodar

NEW DELHI - A study released last month by the US Census Bureau confirms what has been suspected for quite some time: that Indians are the best educated, highest-earning, youngest and most likely to be white collar workers among all major ethnic g roups in the United States, including native-born Americans.
The study, titled "We the People: Asian Americans in the United States" and based on 2000 census results, highlights the enormous socio-economic mix of the 10 million Asian-Americans, of whom more than one-third live in California. In the past 10 years, the number of Asian-Americans has increased from 6.9 million, or 2.8% of the US population, in 1990 to 10.2 million, or 3.6%. If one were to take into account mixed race Asian-Americans, counted by the census for the first time in the year 2000, the population is 11.9 million, or 4.2% of the US population.

Study Finds Deadly Spike in Racial Violence Against Asian Americans
[Los Angeles Times - 3/11/02] Racist attacks against Asian Americans spiked significantly nationwide after Sept. 11, claiming two lives and causing injuries to dozens more, according to a report released today by the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium. The study, "Backlash: When America Turned on Its Own," tracked 243 incidents in the three-month period after the terrorist attacks. By contrast, bias-based attacks against Asian Americans for typical 12-month periods number around 400, according to the report. Victims included a Sikh American from Mesa, Ariz., who was shot and killed by a gunman who yelled "I stand for America all the way," and a Pakistani American grocer who was killed in Texas. Nonviolent crimes against Asian Americans ranged from vandalism to verbal harassment. Businesses have been pelted with Molotov cocktails and homes burned to the ground, according to the report. Among those targeted have been women and children. Singled out as targets, according to the report, have been South Asian Americans, including Indian and Pakistani Americans, but especially Sikh Americans, a religious group often mistakenly perceived to be Arab because many of their men wear turbans and long beards.
