Iran is situated in south-western Asia and borders the three CIS states, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Turkmenistan, as well as the Caspian Seas to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south and Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.
LANDSCAPE
A series of massive, heavily eroded mountain ranges surround Iran's high interior basin. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high. In sharp contrast are the coastal regions outside the mountain ring. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea, never more than 70 miles wide and frequently narrowing to 10, falls sharply from the 10,000-foot summit to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

Geography of Pakistan The Indus river plain is the rice bowl of Pakistan . While less than 1/5 th of its land is potentially arable and almost all of that is intensively farmed, output is low by world standards. However, the fertile Indus River basin allows Pakistan to feed its rapidly growing population under normal conditions. Pakistan is home to several great rivers which arise in the Himalayan Mountains and meet in the Indus River valleys: these include the Indus , the Jhelum , the Chenab , the Ravi and Sutlej Rivers which together make the Punjab (land of five rivers) a fertile and prosperous area. The British enhanced the usefulness of these rivers over 100 years ago in a series of irrigation projects known as the Canal Colonies which brought fertility to previously arid lands. Three great dams: the Tarbela on the Indus , the Mangla on the Jhelum and the Warsak on the Kabul River have played a vital role in the economy of the country as well as calming floodwaters. While Pakistan lies in the temperate zone, its climate varies greatly according to altitude. The mountain areas are cold year round with over 300 glaciers which never melt. The lowlands are characterized by hot dry summers, and cool or cold dry winters. There is little rainfall and little snow outside of the mountain areas. The lower elevations of Pakistan have four seasons: a cold season from December to March, a hot season from April to June, a monsoon season from July to September, and a post monsoon season in October and November. Most of the rain falls during the monsoon season which can also be a time of floods and high humidity. The post monsoon season is dry and pleasant with warm days and cool nights. The dessert province of Balochistan is often missed by much of the monsoon rain.

    Border on the brink
Kashmir has been called the world's most dangerous border and the likeliest place for a nuclear war to erupt. It is the state bordering India and Pakistan, two countries that not only share a past but also a long-standing hatred for each other.
Both countries successfully tested nuclear weapons within weeks of each other in May 1998, significantly raising the stakes in the long-simmering feud over Kashmir for the entire region.
In addition, Pakistan sits next door to Afghanistan, one of the main theatres in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. American forces say Taliban fighters are using Pakistan as a base for launching attacks on southern and southeastern Afghanistan.
Although both India and Pakistan have expressed their support for the war on terrorism, reports of continuing cross-border attacks only add to the instability in the region.
