Outrage! Jets Sold To Pakistan!
The already heated debate about the proposal for a new West Side stadium for the New York Jets has reached a new level of outrage and absurdity this week with the stunning news that the Jets are to be sold to Pakistan Now, I'm sure that the NFL would like to expand into Central Asia, but it seems like a losing proposition to try to impose, top-down, an American-style football regime in an area of the world that has had no experience with it. On the plus side, Gang Green's color scheme matches the Pakistani flag rather nicely, so perhaps there's hope after all. Building Ties With Pakistan
    Rashid Ahmad
Ties between Pakistan and Iran are deeply rooted in history and have had a strong influence on all aspects of the daily lives of the people of the two countries. The impacts of the centuries old ties are evident in the religion, language, culture, architecture, literature and music of the two countries.
In an interview with Iran Daily, the Press, Education and Cultural Counselor of Pakistan Embassy in Tehran, Rashid Ahmad, spoke about the range of common cultural affinities between Iran and Pakistan. Persian and Urdu scripts are virtually identical, the music is very similar, poetic themes are common and the perspective on culture and art is the same. The people of Pakistan and Iran have a common vision and a promising future, said the Pakistani diplomat.
    Excerpts of the interview:
IRAN DAILY: How do you see the bilateral arrangement between Islamic republics of Iran and Pakistan in the cultural and education fields?
AHMAD: Pakistan and Iran share a common cultural heritage. The bonds of similarities between the two countries derive their strength from frequent interaction at the people to people and government to government level. Iran was the first country to extend recognition to the new state of Pakistan in August, 1947. From that day till now, there has been no looking back on the development of relations between the two neighboring countries. This is but natural given the many commonalities that the peoples of the two countries share.

Article preview: first 500 of 3,861 words total. Summary: Pakistani militant groups are killing civilians and engaging in terrorism in Indian-held Kashmir under the guise of holy war. The government in Islamabad supports these militants and their religious schools as cheap ways to fight India and educate Pakistan's youth. But this policy is creating a culture of violence that exacerbates internal sectarianism and destabilizes the region. Without change, this monster threatens to devour Pakistani society. Jessica Stern is a lecturer in public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and Adjunct Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

    The Terrorist Attack on America
Foreign Affairs is making available previously published articles that contribute to an understanding of the tragic attacks on New York and Washington. Several of the essays analyze the nature of contemporary terrorism and the capabilities of the United States to combat it. Other essays provide the Middle Eastern and radical Islamic contexts for so much recent terrorism, including, apparently, the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
    Pakistan's Jihad Culture
    Jessica Stern
    (November/December 2000)
Radical Islamic groups, strongly represented in the Pakistani military and tacitly supported by the government, are destabilizing the country and the region and providing critical support to the Taliban regime in neighboring Afghanistan.
"By facilitating the activities of the irregulars in Kashmir, the Pakistani government is inadvertently promoting internal sectarianism, supporting international terrorists, weakening the prospect for peace in Kashmir, damaging Pakistan's international image, spreading a narrow and violent version of Islam throughtout the region, and increasing tensions with India- all against the interest of Pakistan as a whole."

Australia have had comprehensive victories in three Test series and one 50-over romp this summer and now seek to take the tri-series before the show moves to New Zealand and England. Ricky Ponting and his men will be eager to win the finals without resort to a decider. It's hard to see them falling short, provided they stop pitching the ball up to Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq. Australia have Pakistan's measure and had more reason to fear the West Indies's ability to rise to an occasion. Alas, the men from the Caribbean undid themselves in Perth by omitting Marlon Samuels. Apart from suffering defeats in dead rubbers - caused as much by poor selection as careless play - the Australians have been all-conquering. Those losses, in Mumbai and Perth, were due to errors in the choice of bowlers, with Nathan Hauritz preferred to Stuart MacGill for the subcontinental tour, and Brad Hogg and Andrew Symonds bowling telling overs at the WACA Ground while Shane Watson was left to twiddle his thumbs in the rooms.
