INTRODUCTION
Bosnia and Herzegovina

In the 14th century the principality of Bosnia joined with a duchy to the south that would eventually be called Herzegovina as part of a short-lived medieval kingdom. The modern-day country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, often referred to simply as Bosnia, is still divided geographically into a northern region of Bosnia and a southern region of Herzegovina. The republic is bounded on the north and west by Croatia and on the east by Serbia and Montenegro. Bosnia also has 20 km (12 mi) of coastline along the Adriatic Sea, wedged between Croatian territories. The capital and largest city is Sarajevo.

Islamic affairs analyst BBC Islamic affairs analyst Roger Hardy visits Pakistan in his continuing series on Islam and modernity. Of all the countries visited in this series - Iran, Turkey, Egypt - Pakistan's situation is the most perilous. Under the pressure of events since the 11 September last year, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is trying to eradicate the extremism which has taken root in his country over the last 20 years or so. Musharraf is trying to fashion 'jihad' into a struggle for education
So who and what created the culture of "jihad" - or holy war - which General Musharraf has pledged to destroy, and can he succeed in destroying it? As the country celebrates 55 years of existence, there is still fierce debate over its character and identity as a homeland for the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent.

By Roger Hardy
Islamic affairs analyst
BBC Islamic affairs analyst Roger Hardy visits Pakistan in his continuing series on Islam and modernity. Above all, the debate centres on whether Pakistan should be a religious or a secular state. So how did Mohamed Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founder, see Islam? It was a question I put to the writer and journalist Khaled Ahmed.

Pakistan - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think about the culture of your country. What do you like about it? Do you have some favorite kinds of music? You can probably think favorite singer or musician or two. Do you have some favorite books? A television show? You can probably think of many things you like and don't like about the culture where you live.
Do you think religion is an important part of the culture where you live? For many people, religion is a very important part of life. In many countries, religion is at the center of its culture. Is this the case in your culture? It is in Pakistan. In fact, the country of Pakistan was created mostly on religion.
Until the middle of the 20th century, Pakistan was actually part of India. The people of northwest India, in modern-day Pakistan, have had many religions over the years. The religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam have all been the primary religion in this area at one time or another.

The Mughal (or Mogul) Empire ruled most of India and Pakistan in the 16th and 17th centuries. It consolidated Islam in South Asia, and spread Muslim (and particularly Persian) arts and culture as well as the faith. The Mughals were Muslims who ruled a country with a large Hindu majority. However for much of their empire they allowed Hindus to reach senior government or military positions. The Moghuls brought many changes to India:
  • Centralised government which brought together many smaller kingdoms Delegated government with respect for human rights Persian art and culture Persian language mixed with Arabic and Hindi to create Urdu Periods of great religious tolerance A style of architecture (e.g. the Taj Mahal)
