Luncheon
A tradition since 1985, a painting is carefully selected to provide a backdrop for the head table in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, where the President and First Lady, Vice President and spouse, and other honored guests are seated with the Chairman of the JCCIC, Senator Trent Lott, the Speaker of the House, J. Dennis Hastert, and the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, Senator Chris Dodd. This year's chosen painting, entitled Wind River, Wyoming , is the 1870 creation of Albert Bierstadt, a premier western landscape artist of the nineteenth century. Famous for his depictions of the American West, Bierstadt was commissioned by the U.S. Government to capture the grandeur of the country at a time when much of the territory was still unchartered and few Americans could make the voyage to see the country for themselves. Wind River, Wyoming is on loan from the private collection of Mr. Philip Anschutz in Denver, Colorado.

T his is the home page of Paintingactivities.com, offering through Wordwrite Associates a series of painting activities in Europe and the United Kingdom. Wordwrite Associates have been running tutor-led week-long art holidays in stunning locations off the tourist track in Tuscany and the Loire Valley for several years and a measure of their success is the number of referrals and returners we greet year by year.
E ach of our team of tutors is respected in their field as working artists and is qualified to teach all abilities in all media. Eager to pass on their enthusiasm for the arts, they are as happy to introduce painters to new techniques as to provide guidance to experienced artists. They never forget that their students are spending a holiday following a passion and although the end of each week customarily is celebrated by an informal exhibition of the work produced, the days are relaxed and include visits, sketchbook walks and a daily constructive critique. At the same time we know artists are as keen to paint as to go sightseeing so we seek to offer a balanced programme aimed at achieving a balance between the two.
N on-painting partners are not neglected and we are on hand to advise on walks etc. They share the houseparty atmosphere, such an important feature of

Roman Painting: Frescoes From Campania
Introduction Site Map Picture Gallery Timelines ... Acknowledgment Of the paintings which survive from the Roman classical world, many are frescoes from the area of Campania around Naples. Campania includes Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other towns whose buildings, paintings, and sculptures were preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. While there is evidence that the Romans also painted on portable panels, the surviving paintings that we can see today were painted directly on the walls of their rooms. Domestic interiors were claustrophobic - windowless and dark - so the Romans used painted decoration to visually open up and lighten their living spaces. Technical elements of Roman painting include the fresco technique; brightly colored backgrounds; division of the wall into multiple rectangular areas ( "tic-tac-toe" design); multi-point perspective; and trompe-l'oeil effects. The art of fresco as practiced in Classical times was described by Vitruvius ( De Architectura ) and Pliny The Elder ( Naturalis Historia .) A wall was prepared by the application of 1-3 coats of mortar (lime and sand) followed by 1-3 coats of lime mixed with finely powdered marble; colored pigments were applied while the wall was still damp. Sometimes tempura and liquid wax were added after the wall had dried.

Late Roman Ecclesiastical Synthesis
Frescoes
1. Fresco of a Candelbearer from the Tomb of Aelia Arisuth, 4th c. A.D. (Gargaresch, Tripoli, in situ). The plastic values of the drapery are sacrificed for the sake of flat surface design, and the wide staring look and formalized posture reflect the hieratic tendencies in the 4th century aesthetic.
Panel painting
1. Encaustic portrait of a lady of the Fayum on a wooden panel, ca. 325-350 A.D. (Cairo: Egyptian Museum). This panel portrait, carrying on the traditional plebeian tradition, does not yet show the stylizations that reflect private art in the hieratic period, but it is certainly expressive. 2. Two panel portraits from the Fayum, Egypt. The left figure is more traditional, but the right figure reflects hieratic influences in private art, which uses stylizations to convey spiritual excitement.
Miniature painting
1. Codex Vaticanus, Death of Dido from Virgil, beg. 5th c. A.D. (Rome: Vat. Lib.). 17.5 x 17.8 cm. This is one of the earliest surviving miniature paintings from Rome. The rotulus form of writing began to yield to the codex in part because it did not lend itself to miniature painting. Hieratic features: bird's eye perspective; brighter more contrasting color masses to convey emotion; stylized proportions; red frame crowding the dramatic narrative. Typical painterly handling of color.

Pom Pom the Clown Bio
About 15 years ago in a galaxy far far away…OOOPs sorry, I spaced out there for a second.
Pom Pom the Clown came about because I love kids! I wanted to do something with kids, and for kids to entertain and bring them joy and lasting memories. Pom Pom the Clown was born in the back of my closet (where my first costume came out of) and viola, 15 years and hundreds of birthday parties later Pom Pom is still bringing good clean fun to the Yuba and Sutter communities. Look for Pom Pom at children’s birthday parties, company events, fairs, festivals, promotions, parades anywhere there are people and parties. Pom Pom performs both small scale and stage magic called, “Creative Clown Comedy Magic”.

An In-Depth Study
by Jonathan Janson The Girl with a Pearl Earring is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's absolute masterworks. After more than a century of study, the work still poses significant questions. Who was the sitter and was the painting even intended as a portrait? Why had it remained in complete obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1882 and sold for the price of a reproduction? Was it a part of a pendant? Did Vermeer sell the painting during his lifetime? Why was the original background a deep transparent green rather than the black we see today? Was the pearl a real one? What significance did the turban have? Which painting procedures did Vermeer employ? Which pigments did he use?

F
irst, there is the Chinese brush . Though similar to the brush used for watercolor painting in the West, it has a finer tip suitable for dealing with a wide range of subjects and for producing the variations in line required by different styles. Since the materials used for calligraphy and painting are essentially the same, developments in calligraphic styles and techniques can also be used in painting.
Brush Techniques and Strokes T he ancients used the expression yu pi yu mo(to have brush, to have ink). These show the significance of the meaning for the two terms pi(brush) and mo(ink)
  • The brush techniques so much emphasized in Chinese painting include not only line drawing but also the stylized expressions of shade and texture (cunfa) and the dotting methods(dianfa) used mainly to differentiate trees and plants and also for simple embellishment.

    • Mehron's "liquid makeup" is water-based and comes off easily, although red stains skin a bit. Plan on using three 4oz. bottles to completely cover a 5'7" tall, 120 lb woman. This stuff tends to be streaky and cracks a bit when it dries. It is also not good if your model sweats. However, if you want a "non-slick" look, it can be pretty effective. Best of all, you can shower it off.
    • The most convenient grease-based makeup from Mehron comes in 0.75oz sticks in dozens of colors (mostly slightly varied flesh tones unfortunately, but also plenty of colors). To use this you first apply it, smooth with a damp sponge, then put on translucent powder with a powder puff, then brush the excess powder off with a powder brush. Mehron sells sponges, powder, and powder puffs. Also, many women use grease-based makeup on their faces and understand this procedure. Although the powder is supposed to "set" the makeup, I've found that the stuff still tends to rub off. So be careful if the model touches bare skin with painted skin you'll get a smudge.
