Natural Resources This lesson gives you an understanding of outdoor recreation and its benefits. It also explores integrating recreation with other uses or values on your woodlot. What is Outdoor Recreation? According to a 1993-94 Nova Scotia Woodlot Owner Survey conducted for the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, 27 per cent of respondents said outdoor recreation was one of the reasons they own their woodlot. Outdoor recreation refers to leisure activities that take place in a natural setting and benefit the body, mind and/or spirit. Examples are hiking, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and wildlife viewing. Outdoor recreation can overlap with competitive outdoor activities such as orienteering or ski races. It can also be done with other activities such as environmental education for example hiking to study an old growth forest. Outdoor recreation can also simply be enjoying the peace and quiet in a non-physical way.

SGA Clubs
Last Update: September 11, 2003
Below you will find a list of all the SGA sponsored clubs and a brief description of them. Aero Club , President: Jeff Rogers
The Aero Club was formed to provide students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to obtain flight instruction and ultimately a private's pilot license for at least half of what it costs elsewhere. The club currently owns a 1975 Cessna 150M, which may be rented for $30 ($40 for non-UTSI member) an hour. The club has 5 flight instructors available to provide flight instruction whenever student schedules permit. The club house is located at the Tullahoma Airport and members have unlimited access to it and to the aircraft. There is a yearly membership fee of $60 (non-UTSI member $80). For more information, contact the president or go their own home page American Club , President: No Active Members
This club promotes cultural awareness among its members and the UTSI international student population at large. It encourages and contributes in the learning, understanding, and appreciation of the American culture by organizing and promoting participation in relevant extra-curricular activities. The club plans field trips which are intended to fulfill these objectives. Astronomy Club , President: Peter Williams
This club offers a star reaching experience. The UTSI Astronomy Club observes the planets and stars on occasion, and observation can be arranged any time on request; or students may borrow a telescope if they like to watch the sky on their own. Three telescopes are available for observations.

Protective Eyewear for Young Athletes
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology strongly recommend protective eyewear for all participants in sports in which there is risk of eye injury. Protective eyewear should be mandatory for athletes who are functionally one-eyed and for athletes whose ophthalmologists recommend eye protection after eye surgery or trauma.
BACKGROUND More than 42,000 sports and recreation-related eye injuries were reported in 2000.1 Seventy-two percent of the injuries occurred in individuals younger than 25 years, 43% occurred in individuals younger than 15 years, and 8% occurred in children younger than 5 years.1 Children and adolescents may be particularly susceptible to injuries because of their aggressive play, athletic maturity,2-4 and poor supervision in some recreational situations.
The sports highlighted in this statement were chosen on the basis of their popularity and/or the high incidence of eye injuries in that sport. Participation rates and information on the severity of the injuries are unavailable; therefore, the relative risk of significant injuries cannot be determined for various sports. Baseball and basketball are associated with the most eye injuries in athletes 5 to 24 years old.1

The first case, a woman aged 77 years, became ill on 20 May and the second, a man of 71 years, on 3 June. Both cases were diagnosed serologically. Both cruises sailed from and returned to Liverpool, but their itineraries included calls at different ports. The tour operators use both Liverpool and Greenock (in Scotland) as ports of sail, as a result of which two incident control teams were convened.
