WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
After-School Programs - From Vision to Reality
Synopsis

In recent years, parents, policy-makers and organizations have begun to focus on developing afterschool programs. In this workshop, we look at the benefits that a quality afterschool program can provide to students, their families, and the community. Participants will examine different ways to create effective afterschool programs and will be directed through a step-by-step guide to create programs that address the physical, emotional, academic and social needs of children. The workshop was developed in concert with three leaders in the afterschool field: An-Me Chung, program officer at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation; Ellen Gannett, Associate Director of the National Institute on Out-of-School Time at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College; and Adriana de Kanter La Perla, the Department of Education's liaison to the C.S. Mott Foundation.

10 Great Websites for Teachers
Guiding Middle Grades Curriculum Decisions The first three guides (language arts, math, and science) in the Education Development Center, Inc. series, "Guiding Middle-Grades Curriculum Decisions," are available at MiddleWeb at no cost. The series, developed with support from the Edna McConnell Clark and W.K. Kellogg Foundations, is designed to assist middle-grades educators as they help young adolescents to achieve high standards. Each guide addresses the content of the curriculum and how it is taught; how the curriculum can engage all students in learning and meet the developmental needs of individual students; and what is required for successful curriculum implementation.
Great Teaching Strategies
We never cease to be amazed by the efforts of some teachers with a knack for the Web and an urge to share. This website maintained by a California high school English teacher has much to offer to middle grades teachers, too. Digital pictures illustrate various concepts used in Jim Burke's classroom, including notetaking strategies, graphic strategies, discussion strategies, and teaching strategies. A second page on "note-making" (beyond "note-taking") includes visuals of many techniques, PDF versions of handouts, and more. And don't miss the English Companion homepage!

Recommended grade levels are shown, but you should tailor the project to your students. At the end, we even have a couple of web projects for K-4 As students become more advanced at web use, they can begin to create their own pages. Any of the following ideas can be developed for advanced students by having them work in teams to create a Web Virtual Collection or Exhibition on the topic to share with others. Reminder: One of the most important things you can do for your students is help them learn to evaluate information! Have them ask: Who provided this information? What are his or her qualifications? Is this information consistent with what experts say? Does this information reflect a particular viewpoint? What are the other viewpoints? What can I learn from this web page? This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Anyone who cares about teaching statistics should own this book. It is the fruit of years of collecting, inventing, experimenting, and hard thinking by two classroom veterans who are also leading statisticians. Buy it, read it, use it: if your reaction is like mine, you'll find lots of things that you want to try.
George Cobb, Mt Holyoke College Gelman's and Nolan's class demonstrations sound so fun and instructive they make me want to build a stats course around them. Why are students in larger than average families? Why are there fewer baby girls in China? After students secretly put sequences of real and made-up random coin tosses on the board, how can Gelman and Nolan tell which are which? How could students who have worked together on such problems not be fascinated with the explanations?
Frank Morgan, Williams College Teaching Statistics: A Bag of Tricks by Gelman and Nolan could have also been appropriately named "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Teaching Statistics, but were Afraid to Ask"! Much more than just a collection of engaging activities and examples, it also includes informative discussions of pedagogy and practical tips on everything from course organization to effectively integrating activities into the classroom to maintaining interest and motivating students. Both new and experienced teachers of statistics will find this book to be a valuable resource.

The class consists of students aged 15-18 from different classes. They normally discuss UNESCO World Heritage issues, but this school year, after the Beslan tragedy, she and her students have decided to learn more about peaceful conflict resolution in order to teach other students about developing tolerance and solving interpersonal problems in a peaceful manner. Like UNESCO schools all over the world, we do a lot of project work with partners from numerous countries around the world. The projects in which our students and teachers participate, range from art, environment, to drug prevention projects and other. I, personally, am interested in UNESCO World Heritage issues and my UNESCO Class changes every year, because some students leave school and others join the class, but the idea remains the same - young people interested in UNESCO World Heritage, feel responsible for making the world a better place to live and come together once a week for projects and activities.

Alan Sitomer, an English teacher at Lynwood High School, in Lynwood, California, had an epiphany one night. "I was focusing on Thomas's line 'Do not go gentle into that good night,'" he recalls, when he was struck by a novel idea: Why not compare Dylan Thomas to someone many students consider a modern-day poet: the late Tupac Shakur? The comparison may seem far fetched, but the integration of hip-hop and poetry has captivated Sitomer's students.

Introduction Curriculum Focus Outcomes for Key Learning Areas ... Teaching and Learning Activities Introduction All Global Classroom projects are linked to the curriculum, with each project identifying relevant strands in at least one key learning area. Despite this, many teachers have voiced a concern, or have been reluctant to participate in projects which appear in the database because of the time required - time which would otherwise be spent on teaching and learning activities planned to assist students in meeting identified outcomes. Participation in Global Classroom projects need not be seen as 'something else' to be fitted in to the curriculum, but could provide a core focus which integrate other outcomes which have been identified by the teacher. The following is an example of a curriculum unit of work based around a Global Classroom Project called Local History. This project was developed by Margaret Shearn from Skipton Primary School. The project provides an example of how an integrated unit of work can be developed around a project, enabling students to work towards a number of outcomes across a number of key learning areas. The unit is targeted at Years 5/6, though outcomes from Levels 3 and 5 have been selected as well as Level 4 to ensure a comprehensive curriculum. Outcomes have been selected from SOSE, The Arts, English, Maths and Technology. Students' prior knowledge should also be taken into consideration at the planning stage.
