The Burrowing Owl is currently on British Columbia's Red list CDC COSEWIC has assigned Endangered status in 1995.
Image Credits: top photos by D. Low, sketch in "Birds of British Columbia", Campbell et al. bottom photo taken by Dick Cannings, Royal British Columbia Museum, Historical facts Historically, Burrowing Owls in British Columbia bred mainly in the Okanagan-Similkameen and south Thompson basins: Osoyoos, Oliver, Penticton, White Lake, Coldstream, Okanagan Landing, Knutsford, Savona, Kamloops, Douglas Lake and Lulu Island in the Fraser Delta; with occasional records over a slightly wider area in southern British Columbia - east to the Kootenay River valley, north to Horsefly in the interior and north to Comox on the coast. Last breeding record in 1970. Designated threatened in 1979 and reconfirmed as threatened in 1991; re-examined in 1995 and uplisted to endangered. Except for some recent nests derived from introductions, its true breeding status is not clear but there may still be a few isolated nesting pairs in the Okanagan Valley each year. The reintroduction of Burrowing Owls has not been successful in establishing a stable population. Distinguishing features Within the owl family, Burrowing Owls; being a grassland rather than a forest species, are unusual in many respects: they live in underground burrows, are often active in broad daylight, and eat insects as well as rodents. Ranked second to the Barn Owl as the most economically beneficial owl in North America because it eats so many insects and rodents near agricultural areas.

Breeding and quarantine center.

Furness Owls at Sowerby Woods
Barrow-in-Furness On Tuesday 26th April 2005 the Barrow Council Planning Committee gave the go ahead for the development of a new Owl Centre on land adjacent to Sowerby Woods in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. This was a major milestone for ourselves and has come after 3 years from the original idea. We have worked closely with organisations concerned with both conservation and owl husbandry such as English Nature, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and The World Owl Trust. The centre, when opened, will have facilities for a family day out, including:- Children’s play area, food outlet, picnic areas, education centre and toilets. We hope to have over 100 owls on display. As well as regular displays from specially trained owls/bird of prey. In addition, there will also be a dedicated breeding area which, the public will not have access to, thi is due to the birds within that area being part of an ex-situ breeding programme for the more endangered species of owls, but it is envisaged that there will be CCTV cameras installed within the nest boxes of some of these bird and relayed to TV screens that the public will be able to view. We still have a lot of work to do and there are various conditions the we still have to satisfy before development can be started. But we are still confident that the centre will be open to the public on the 1st April 2006.

167. North American Owl Identification Guide
Has descriptions, with markings and pictures for about 19 owls, from the nonprofit Owl Institute in Montana.
http://www.owlinstitute.org/idguide.html
Identification of North American Owls The following guide is designed to help you identify the 20 breeding species of owls that can be found in the United States and Canada. Owls are divided into two groups or subfamilies: Tytoninae (barn and bay owls) and Strigidae (all other owls). Owls are basically nocturnal or crepuscular (active in the late morning or early evening). However, during winter, some species may be observed almost any time and in a variety of habitats because they are in search of food. Because most owls are active in times of low light or complete darkness, they have evolved a low- frequency vocal repertoire as a means of communication. Familiarity with these primary songs can greatly facilitate owl identifications. Owls have two primary hunting methods: (1) "perch and pounce," which usually takes place from a low perch and is most common among forest owls, and (2) "quartering," which means flying low over the ground; it is most common among open-country owls. The photos and accompanying text are designed to help you identify North American owls and provide some basic life history. In North America, female owls are larger than males, with the exception of the Burrowing owl. For identification purposes, owls are often separated into those with "ear tufts" or "horns" and those which are "round headed." In the owl descriptions that follow, we have used "tufts" instead of "eartufts" or "horns" to denote the specialized feathers arising from the heads of many owls. We have retained the use of "round-headed." If you're in the field and trying to identify North American owls, make the following items part of your check lists:

INSTITUTE FOR FIELD ORNITHOLOGY
OWLS OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS 1-6 May 2006
Charlo, MT
Instructors: Denver Holt and Terry McEneaney COURSE DESCRIPTION Very few people get their fill of owls and there is no better place to observe and study owls then the mountain environment of Montana. Montana is home to fifteen species of owls, with 14 species documented as breeding in the state. Our target owls for study will include Northern Pygmy-Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Boreal Owl, Western Screech-Owl, Barn Owl, Long-eared Owl, Short-eared Owl, Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Great Gray Owl. Short-eared Owls should be performing their wing-clapping, "sky dancing" courtship displays during our time here and chances are good for seeing or hearing possibly 10 species of total owls, although there are no guarantees. This course will involve a combination of field trips and interactive lectures, with primary emphasis on field identification of owls. We will have the opportunity to assist the Owl Research Institute in collecting long-term data, particularly on Long-eared Owls. This hands-on exercise will involve capturing, banding, weighing, measuring, and recording data on Long-eared Owls and a few other species where possible. In addition owl ecology will be covered including: habitat requirements, hunting techniques, prey preferences, evolutionary adaptations, and a variety of other topics. And for those that want to sharpen their sound skills, we will study identifying owls by sound.

We read books, saw videos, visited websites, did the Owl Prowl online activities, dissected owl pellets, wrote poems and skits, created illustrations and had an owl workshop in our classroom by Sweet Briar Nature Center . We sure did learn a lot about owls! Owl Pellets Today I went to Mr. Eaton's class to do a science project on owl pellets. We had to open pellets and it was fun. Then we had to take the bones and the fur out. After that we saw what the owl ate by putting it together. Mine was a rat. And it was very hard gluing it together. -Leviticus Chapter 11, verse 13-19 "We are men of groans and howls. Mystic men who eat boiled owls."
-Dr. Seuss Many owls have "ear tufts" on the tops of their heads. An owls' fluffy feathers mask the sound of flapping wings, allowing owls to swoop down on an animal undetected. Owls have binocular vision -just like humans- but cannot move their eyes in the sockets. If an owl wants to follow a moving object, it has to move its head. Most owls have trouble seeing in daylight. BARN OWLS (Tytonidae), and TYPICAL OWLS (Strigidae). There are ten species of barn owl, which is sometimes called the monkey-faced owl. Barn owls play an important role by keeping the number of rats and mice in check. Great Horned Owl -which is found all over North America. Great horned owls are two feet long, with enormous tufts on their ears. They make a noise like "whoo, hoo-hoo". Great horned owls are the only owls who pose a threat to chickens. Rabbits have reason fear them, and smaller birds had better watch out.
