Description: The burrowing owl is a small, ground-dwelling bird that is highly visible to humans. This brown, long-legged owl can frequently be seen in the daytime bobbing up and down while perched on a fence post or the mound of a prairie dog burrow. Contrary to what their name implies, these little owls do not dig their own burrows, but will instead use an abandoned rodent burrow, usually from a prairie dog. Burrowing owls are small, about nine inches in height with a short tail and long legs. It has yellow eyes, no ear tufts and its face is framed in white with a black collar. Its call is a mellow coo-cooooo , repeated twice and also a cackling. Range: The owls breed from Canada’s southern prairie provinces south throughout western United States to southern California and Texas. Burrowing owls are resident in central and southern Florida. In Colorado, burrowing owls are a migratory species, and can be found almost anywhere there are prairie dog burrows from late March or early April through October. During winter, Colorado owls migrate to Mexico and Central America. Habitat: Burrowing owls are primarily found in grasslands and mountain parks, usually in or near prairie dog towns.

Indie Rock is Important. No city embodies that tragicomic claim like Chicago. Thrill Jockey the silly coven of haughty and eminently geeky indie-rockers with unbearable jazz pretensions and its arsenal of post-every-fucking-thing-under-the-sun nomenclature has consistently been the most egregious of the Second City's many labels vying for real-life importance, your serious esteem, and of course, CD and show-ticket dollars. But while the über-musicianly Sir John McEntire and his Knights of Bucktown have been out wielding Powerbooks, Kinsella(s) Inc. has been steadily building an empire of pretension. Sometimes tickling the critics into embarrassing coos of honeyed admiration, and other times inspiring equally disproportionate rock-crit fatwas, Tim Kinsella has succeeded where other Illini have failed: in disarming the full fury of his detractors with nothing more than a smirk. I'm not talking, of course, about Kinsella's actual countenance; I'm referring to his neo-absurdist temperament and the obvious fun with which he goes about his business. Even when he was just the scratchy-voiced, baby-faced ringmaster of Cap'n Jazz, Tim Kinsella was already establishing himself as a first- (well, maybe second) rate semantic clown and word-gamesman. With a penchant for double-entendre and imagistic jokes, Kinsella charmed his partisans and alienated the rest of us with his Duchampesque disregard for everything, and created a contested little body of work which still polarizes fans of the genre. Personally, Joan of Arc drives me up the fucking wall, but my dismissal of the band has nothing to do with the personality phenomenon of Kinsella; they sorely lacked dynamism, and there were too few hooks and too much blipped-over space for my liking.

They've got movie-star charisma, with power (and talons) to match. But to raise chicks, snowy owls rely on the boom-or-bust market of their favorite prey: the humble lemming.
Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
Nyctea scandiaca in significant numbers, Holt says, "You have to come to Barrow." Most owl species depend on camouflage and stealth to survive, but "snowy owls seem to defy all the conventional owl wisdom," says researcher Mat Seidensticker. "They don't hide. During the breeding season they're flashing white beacons" against the treeless greens and browns of the tundra, hunting in Arctic summer's 24-hour daylight. Adult females weigh as much as five pounds and hurtle through the air on wings more than five feet across. Males are smaller and sleeker, with a top weight of about four pounds, but they're equally powerful fliers. Lemmings aren't their only prey: Snowy owls kill weasels and foxes, and even feed on other birds, including jaegers, eiders, and gulls. Diving out of the sky with long legs and talons outstretched, a snowy owl can drive away humans, dogs, even caribou that wander too close to its young.

On a whim, you peek behind the scenes and find all kinds of shoddy workmanship, unsafe wiring, cracked mortar, gaps in the timberwork, and structural defects. Checking the quality of a translation is something like this. No matter how polished, entertaining, or creative it may be, workmanship is an essential criterion of quality in translation. Here there are two aspects of workmanship in question: Fidelity and Consistency. Fidelity means grasping the meaning of the original and translating it accurately. This means checking facts, terminology, and background. Dogged fidelity is by no means how good, let alone great translations are created. Nevertheless any departure from fidelity to the original must be a conscious decision, not the result of omission, sloppiness, or ignorance.
