Barred owls are often out at night, dawn or dusk, but can be seen during the day. NESTING AND RAISING BABIES: OWLS AND PEOPLE : Barred owls live all over the eastern U.S., and are very common in Florida. Their calls sound like "who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" Since barred owls like to live near water, they may get tangled in fishing line someone has left behind. Sometimes they are hit by cars while looking for prey near a road. NEVER try to touch or get close to an owl. They are predators with strong talons and will hurt you if you get too close. It is against the law to have an owl as a pet or to have owl feathers without a permit from the government. It’s better to watch and learn and enjoy the owl free. Eye on Success
When Katrina Hirsch first stepped onto the Kennesaw State soccer pitch she was not clad in the Owls familiar white kit‚ nor was she in KSU’s intimidating black attire. Instead‚ she was a high school recruit who signed to play for a local university which would be fielding a soccer side for the first time. Dressed neatly in a very attractive‚ conservative outfit‚ she smiled brightly while politely greeting people and answering questions from the local media. A player on a team that didn’t at the time have more than five players‚ Hirsch (who admittedly performers better when anxious) stood nervously‚ yet delivered confidently in her first college experience.

whoooo are learning about owls
at the Blue Island Library. This site is dedicated to my favorite subject, MY OWLS I have gathered hundreds of pictures of owls in all their glory, from the barn owl to the snowy owl. NEW: Kids work with owl pellets in the classroom. Do you like owls too? You can read about the history of owls and where they live and a little bit about each owl. There is also a section of my own private gallery of my own collection which numbers in the hundreds that I am working on right now. I have been collecting owls for about 20 years now (like many others) and am very proud of it. I would love to chat with or exhange with anyone more pictures of owls or any tidbits you have about these wonderful creatures. These pages are ever changing as I continue to add more info and try to aknowledge all the wonderful people who love owls.

The Screech Owls are all grown up. Ten years have passed, and Travis, Sarah, Nish, and their friends have gone their separate ways, most of them scattered far and wide from their old home town. Travis is a teacher. Sarah has become famous as captain of the women's Olympic hockey team. Data runs a computer business with Fahd. Wilson is a police officer. And Nish? Nish is in Las Vegas, a valued member of the aerial stunt team The Flying Elvises.
When the people of Tamarack decide to name their new hockey facility the arah Cuthberston Arena, it is the perfect time for all the old friends to reunite and play an opening night exhibition game. But as the Screech Owls start to return, trouble also comes to Tamarack. The unspoiled town faces disaster in the form of a new gambling casino, and it seems that the powerful developers will stop at nothing to get their way. Not even murder.

Great Horned Owl
(Bubo virginianus)
Family: Strigidae (STRIJ-ih-dee). The Typical Owl Family, includes about 140 owls except for barn owls and bay owls. Genus: Bubo (BEW-boh) is from the Latin word meaning "owl" or from the Greek word for "eagle owl" used by the great 1st century Roman naturalist Pliny (Gaius Plinius Secundus). Great horned owls are related to the eagle owl of Eurasia.
Species: virginianus, meaning "of Virginia" where the first specimen of great horned owls was collected. The common name "horned owl" comes from the large ear tufts. Geographic Range
Great horned owls occur all over the United States and most of Canada, and southward to Central and South America to the Straits of Magellan. They are one of the most widespread species of owls. They mostly reside year round in their territories, but ones from the far north move southward in fall or winter. Description
Great horned owls are big and bulky (3-4 pounds), standing 18-25" tall with a wingspan of 36-60" long. Males and females are similar in appearance, except the female is the larger of the two. The plumage of the great horned owl varies regionally, from pale to dark. In general, they have brown body plumage covered with darker brown spots and white throat feathers that contrast with the dark cross-barred underparts. The white feathers stand out like a collar against the darker underside feathers. Some great horned owls may be very pale underneath, but still the white collar stands out.

Range
All four of the Southwestern deserts. The barn owl occurs in great numbers in Southern California.
Habitat
Hunts in areas rich in rodents, along desert washes and canyons, where trees for perching are available.
Description
The barn owl can readily be distinguished from other owls by its unique shape, color and voice. This distinctive, medium-sized owl grows 15 to 20 inches in height. It has long, feathered legs and makes a loud, rasping hiss, rather than the hoot associated with other owls. The Barn Owl is primarily white with buff, yellow and tawny shadings. It is delicately freckled with dark specks and the blending of colors in day-light has led some to call it, the "golden owl." Other common names are for it are the "White Owl" and "Monkey-faced Owl." The barn owl's face is arresting. There are no ear tufts. The eyes and beak are completely encircled by a heart-shaped facial ruff of white, rimmed with tan while slightly curved feathers radiate out from the small, dark eyes. The eyes of owls look forward in a fixed position and cannot move to the side, as the human eye can. Therefore, to see to the side or back, the owl must turn its whole head. They see extremely well at night. Their hearing must be extremely acute also, for it is known that a barn owl can strike a mouse in the dark.
