All owls have specially designed eyes, ears, and wings to enable them to capture their prey. Their eyes are large and on the front of their faces, giving them binocular vision and fine depth perception. They have a large concentration of rods on their retinas, but they see little color. Their eyes are ten times as light-sensitive as human eyes, but they are short-sighted so they hunt near the ground. Their eyes are so large that there is little room in their skulls for eye muscles. Thus an owl turns its head, sometimes as much as 270 degrees, rather than its eyes, to follow a moving object. Owl ears are located on the sides of the "facial disks," those round feather arrangements, and give owls the most highly developed sense of hearing of all birds. The facial feathers help to amplify and channel sounds to their ears. Generally one ear is larger than the other and slightly above or below, so the owl can pinpoint the location of a sound. It can hear a mouse or a cricket in the grass below!

Over 200 species are distributed among approximately 27 genera. Owls are found world-wide, covering nearly all types of terrestrial habitats. Owls hunt a wide variety of prey, ranging from small mammals to birds, lizards, and insects; there are even fish-eating owls in Africa and Asia. Prey is often swallowed whole, and the fur, feathers, and bones are later regurgitated in pellets. Many owl species, especially those that hunt during night hours, are able to fly nearly silently. Several special feather adaptations make this possible. The leading edges of their outer primaries have stiff, comb-like fringes that reduce noise, the trailing edge of their primaries and secondaries have soft fringes that reduced turbulence behind the wings, and their primaries, secondaries, and wing coverts are covered in downy feathers that also reduce noise. Silent flight may be less important in those species that hunt over water or during the day, and many of these species do not have these adaptations.

May 1998. This project contains a compilation of students' contributions. Until further notice, this site is under construction. This Web Quest was inspired by Wol and Weeps, two owls from Farley Mowat's novel: Owls in the Family TO THE STUDENTS: You have completed reading the delightfully amusing novel, Owls in the Family , by Farley Mowat. The story was about two owls that have been adopted by a family. It's such an unusual occurrence, that it really does deserve a closer look. Do you think that young owls can actually be taken into a family and survive? What would you do if you found an injured owl? Is there anything that we can do to help these beautiful birds survive and thrive? YOUR TASK: Working as teams of specialized reporters investigating the Great-Horned Owl, your mission is to produce a newsletter of information, to be shared with kids interested in learning more about these birds of prey. Your newsletter should sensitize readers to the life habits of the owl, and to the fact that they are becoming, in some cases, endangered species. As partners, you will take on one of these roles: Become a team of Photographers , and collect pictures to be included in the informative newsletter. The photographers must always be on the look out for illustrations depicting what other teams write about.

Falconry traces its origins back several thousand years and has been the passion of some of the most influential people in history. Aristocratic and romantic, this ancient sport has retained its mystique right up to the present day and few images are as powerful as a trained hawk sitting sharp eyed on a gloved fist. To watch a falconer's hawk in action can be thrilling, but to get out into the countryside and fly such a bird yourself is an experience without equal; the feel of the hawk riding your hand and the excitement as it launches into flight makes for a spellbinding encounter. At Castle Falconry we are confident of being able to make your first taste of falconry unforgettable. Leading the team is internationally acclaimed falconer and dog trainer Andy Hughes who has personally trained over 70 various birds of prey during the last 28 years, including Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls. Under his guidance you are guaranteed to get the very most of your outing. Groups are kept small and this ensures plenty of involvement, at the same time promoting a friendly, informal atmosphere. A period of instruction will help you feel comfortable around hawks and teach you some basic handling skills. Then it's off into the surrounding countryside to put theory into practice.

Strip away man's superstitions and misconceptions about them and you'll find that owls remain truly fascinating birds. Of the nearly 9,000 kinds of birds in the world, only about 150 are owls. In total numbers of individuals, they make up a small percentage of our birds, yet no group has been more entwined in man's history and folklore. Owls are among the few birds depicted on cave walls by prehistoric man. They were treated with religious respect by the Greeks and Romans, who credited them with great wisdom and knowledge. OwIs were also persecuted because they were thought to be omens of mischance and death. In medieval Europe, an owl hooting from a housetop at night meant the person inside was about to die. An owl screeching at a baby's birth foretold that baby's life as a witch, or its death. Owls have always been associated with witchcraft and Halloween. "Eye of owl" was one of the ingredients in witch's brew. Witches used owls as instruments of death and destruction. Even the American Indian connected owls with dying, calling death "crossing the owl's bridge."
