The fourth graders of Estabrook School in Lexington, MA welcome you to our Owl Home Pages. All of the fourth grade classes have done extensive research about owls or other birds of prey. The research included reading both fiction and non-fiction books, visiting World Wide Web sites, visiting local Audobon Society museums, interviewing wildlife rehabilitators, dissecting owl pellets, listening for owls on a night walk, and much more. The students then assembled their research and creative writing into a book. For their home pages they have chosen their favorite graph, chart, map, or picture along with some accompanying text. The work was completed under the direction of their classroom teachers Renee Sack and Nancy Alloway, classroom tutor Ninfa Ortalono and student teacher Erin Whyte. Thanks to Lexington High School Computer Club members Nick Ingolia and Elaine Srotm and parent Mr. Denison for putting this information on the WWW. Owls are easily recognized; most everyone in the world knows about owls. They are considered creatures of mystery or doom or good luck, depending on where you are. They are wonderful birds to discover during the day, like this huge Great Gray Owl (left) in Yosemite Nat'l Park. But they are primarily nocturnal birds, hunting in the dark by using exceptional hearing and eyes that gather light much better than our own. This Buffy Fish-Owl (below right) was hunting over the tennis courts at the Danum research station in lowland Borneo, where I caught it in a flash. Since owls are night birds, they are difficult to see although their characteristic songs and calls can often be easily heard. I enjoy owls (and there is nothing so pleasant as going to sleep on a camping trips to a chorus of owls), but admit to not being much of an "owler." I tend to enjoy a drink after the sun sets, and there are other things to do indoors at night Stalking outside in the cold and dark for elusive critters, aiming a flashlight at where one thinks they are and rarely being correct, is not my idea of great fun, but there are field ornithologists who are exceptional at owling (Ben King comes to mind; his judicial use of tape and his insight into where an owl is likely to be sitting in extraordinary). Others are good at imitations and whistles and can "call in" the owls on their own, but I'm not one of them. Perhaps this explains why my percentage of the world's owls seen is much lower than most other families. I much prefer my owls in day roosts, like this

The Owls of Harry Potter In the latest installment of the Harry Potter book series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , Hedwig the magical owl makes a spectacular pet for Harry. Although Hedwig spends much of her time in a bird cage in Harry's room, real owls do not make good pets because they need room to take flight and hunt for their unique food. A male snowy owl like Hedwig would fly for miles to hunt lemmings and capture ducks in midair in its native arctic tundra. There are 19 species of owls in North America, and more than 150 species worldwide. Many of them are in decline and face possible extinction due to human activities like logging and urban development. The Nature Conservancy hopes that people who see the majestic owls in the movie will help keep them wild by preserving their rapidly disappearing habitats. Owls have large forward-facing eyes and ears, a hawk -like beak , and usually a conspicuous circle of feathers around each eye called a facial disk . Although owls have binocular vision , their large eyes are fixed in their sockets, and they must turn their entire head to change views. Owls are far-sighted, and are unable to clearly see anything within a few inches of their eyes. However, their vision, particularly in low light, is incredibly good. Many owls can also hunt by sound in total darkness. Different species of owls make different sounds, one of which is the widely recognizable drawn-out "hoo" sound. The facial disc helps to funnel the sound of

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An Ordinary Wizarding Level (often abbreviated OWL ) is an examination testing one's knowledge of and/or ability in a particular field of magic or other magical field of study in the fictional Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling . The name "Ordinary Wizarding Level" comes from the O Level that used to be offered in England Wales , and Northern Ireland . The administration procedure for both exams are very similar.

    OWL Practices
OWLs are administered to all Hogwarts students in their fifth year. They are not administered or graded by the school, but by officials from the Ministry of Magic 's Wizarding Examinations Authority. The examinations do, however, take place at Hogwarts, and ministry officials make an annual trip to the school to administer these examinations. Hogwarts teachers heavily emphasize the importance of the tests, as they play an important role in determining each student's course of study in his or her remaining two years of school (many NEWT classes require high OWL grades as prerequisites ) as well as the careers that the students choose to pursue after Hogwarts.

    The Barn Owl (Tyto alba)
The Barn Owl has nearly world-wide distribution, being absent from only the high Latitudes. It has been introduced into some Pacific islands for rat control and is provided nest boxes in Malaysian palm nut groves for the same purpose. While the barn owl is found all over the US, its numbers are particularly high in California and the Southwest. Farmers and ranchers are increasingly attracted to the barn owl's ability to control rodents better than traps, poison,or cats and at no cost. Barn owls in favorable habitats produce large broods once or twice a year. Each young owl as it nears maturity will eat the equivalent of a dozen mice per night if such prey is available. Adult barn owls kill and consume the equivalent of one large rat or gopher per night. The Owl Rehabilitation Research Foundation,Ontario,Canada, reports that barn owls consume twice as much food for their weight as other owls. The number of barn owls in an area is limited by both prey base and suitable nesting sites. In the West, barn owls not only nest in natural trees cavities and buildings, they also nest in cavities in cliffs and cut banks, stacked hay bales, and in palm trees. Use of these sites often leads to nesting failure such as when bales are shifted or the young outgrows the nest at the base of palm fronds. This brochure offers several nest box designs that can be made from off the shelf materials. In addition, nest box designs that can be made from off the shelf materials. In addition, nest box designs for boxes made from plywood and lumber can be found in a companion brochure, Using Barn Owls for Rodent Control (209-369-8578) and in several other publications: Woodworking for Wildlife, Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources World Aug 1991.
