Friends of the Sea Otter (FSO) is an advocacy group dedicated to actively working with state and federal agencies to maintain the current protections for sea otters as well as to increase and broaden these preservation efforts. We wish to inspire the public at large about the otters' unique behavior and habitat. During the fur trade of the 18th and 19th centuries, southern sea otters were hunted to near extinction. Today only about 2,200 otters can be found off California's central coast. Since January 1977, US Fish and Wildlife Service has placed sea otters on the Endangered Species list so they are protected by state and federal laws.

Mustelidae is the largest family within Carnivora and is comprised of 56 species in 22 genera. Members of this family include weasels, stoats, polecats, mink, marten, fishers, wolverines, otters, badgers and others. While many authors have traditionally considered skunks a subfamily within Mustelidae , recent molecular evidence indicates that skunks do not lie within the mustelid group and instead are recognized as a single family, Mephitidae , a systematic understanding which is accepted here (Dragoo and Honeycutt, 1997; Flynn et al., 2005; Marmi et. al., 2004; Sato et. al., 2003; Sato et. al., 2004). Threatened

The sea otter has been hunted to near extinction for its soft, thick, lustrous fur. This marine mammal once inhabited the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea from northern Asia and the Aleutian Islands south to lower California. By 1911 it was close to extinction when an international treaty gave it complete protection. The world’s sea otter population is now estimated at between 25,000 and 40,000 individuals. Recent transplants have re-established the species along parts of the Pacific coast where it had been completely wiped out, including the coast of British Columbia.
The sea otter does not have deposits of fat under its skin to keep it warm, instead it depends on air trapped in its thick fur for insulation against the cold. Consequently, pollution from oil spills is a major threat to these animals.

Programmers: Otters with rocks?
By Stephan Somogyi, ZDNet News
Published on ZDNet News: May 9, 2001, 5:00 PM PT
COMMENTARYWhen I first began programming, I wrote software in 68k assembler. I was one of those hardcore cycle-shavers who knew the fastest way to clear a data register was with a moveq rather than a clr, or whether a branch taken was faster than an untaken one (which depended on whether it was a short or long branch). I ultimately had to be forced to learn a higher-level language Modula-2 since I was perfectly comfortable with what I was doing, and felt that I was plenty productive. Reading Unreal developer Tim Sweeney's exegesis on programming languages about a year ago brought back many memories. Having recently re-read it, it started me thinking about what the next step in programming language evolution is going to be.

Of otters and men
This is the bit where my work colleagues would probably tell you to run away. If you wander off to do a websearch for the word `furry', you're certain to encounter a number of sites describing Furry Fandom, a very broad grouping which currently seems to include anyone who's read Watership Down once or twice and thought it was good, all the way up to people who believe themselves to be wolves born to parents of the wrong species, and who try to work that out in every area of their lives, apart from using the internet, taking advantage of advances in medical science, getting well-paid jobs in California's computer industry, etc. My interest probably sits around the middle of the camp. I'm interested in mammals, particularly carnivores, particularly mustelids (the weasel family). I used to be wildly interested in foxes, learning all the different species, their latin names, some of their behaviours and locales, until one Christmas day, just after I'd been asked to set the table with the good silver. I found myself gazing at the wall of the dining room, not thinking of awfully much, when suddenly my enthusiasm for all things vulpine was removed - exactly as if someone had pulled my brain's Nintendo cartridge - and replaced with an equal focus on otters and other weasels. I enjoy cartoons (who doesn't) and I'm likely to be more sympathetic to a mediocre comic strip which involves talking animals than to one just involving humans. I particularly like ones where the animals talk, even talk with the humans, but they're still treated like animals: flea collars, eating from a bowl, etc. These include

identification habitat behavior Tracking Otters: How to Find Them and Maybe Understand What They Are All About but please don't trap and kill them. What you want to do is be trapped by the otters. That's happened several times to me. I'll see their tracks and signs and situate myself in just the right spot where one or a half dozen otters will freeze me in my tracks. Then I can't escape the lessons they give me, and I'll try to share those lessons with you. I saw that fellow above after noticing his tracks over a dam for about a week. Then late one morning I was pondering the new tracks in the mud of the dam, looked down stream, and here he came. Then after he scooted by me, he was chased by the critter that made the dam. I learned a lot that day. (Scroll down below and read about a recent encounter) Since 1994 I have been hiking with a camcorder on an island in the St. Lawrence River just east of Lake Ontario, and all the photos on this web page were lifted from those videos. Maybe not the best quality but in the image below you can still make out the six otters on the lodge two heads together, two tails and two embracing!

STATUS: California, or southern, sea otters are listed as “threatened” under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and “fully protected” under California state law. No other U.S. otter population is currently listed under the ESA. In 2003, there is a push to list a stock of the Alaskan sea otters, or northern sea otters, as “endangered” under the ESA. In Canada , the otter population in British Columbia is classified as “threatened” by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). All of the otters in the U.S. are protected under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). DESCRIPTION: The sea otter has the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. Unlike other marine mammals, the sea otter does not have a layer of blubber (fat) to help keep it warm. If an otter’s fur gets coated with oil or any other substance, it can easily die from cold and exposure. SIZE: The sea otter is the largest member of the weasel family. Southern sea otters typically reach about four feet in length. Females average 45 pounds, while males average 65 pounds. Northern sea otters can reach up to 100 pounds.

Huddersfield Otters A.S.C. have been involved in competitive water polo for the greater part of the last century right through to this new millennium. Today, as in earlier years, the club is committed to maintaining and furthering water polo interests in the Huddersfield and Kirklees areas and to support this it has the use of two 25 metre pools with full water polo facilities and equipment at each venue. The facilities available give plenty of scope for the full range of coaching, training and competitive activities necessary for a membership of varying ages and abilities.
The Friday night session at the Huddersfield Sports Centre follows the club's swimming session for beginners and younger swimmers which runs from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The water polo session commences at 8.00pm with the 25m pool facility shared with younger players practice for mini-polo up to 9.00pm and general training for older players to 9.30 pm.

Factoid:
The sea otter has the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. Status: Threatened off California. Population: Today there are fewer than 2,000 southern sea otters off the coast of California. Almost 150,000 northern sea otters inhabit the coastline of Alaska, and there are approximately 9,000 in Russia (Siberia). Two hundred years ago, demand for the otter's pelt nearly led to its extinction. Threats: Oil spills, habitat loss, plastic entanglement, and conflict with abalone fishermen. Survival: The average sea otter lives 10 or 11 years.
Unlike other marine mammals, the sea otter does not have a layer of blubber (fat) to help keep it warm. If an otter's fur gets coated with oil or any other substance, the otter can easily die from cold and exposure. The sea otter is the largest member of the weasel family.
