Monterey Where did we go?
We went on an overnight trip to famous Monterey Bay. On our first day we visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium and hiked at Pt. Lobos State Reserve. We even had pizza for dinner! On our second day, we kayaked the marina where we saw lots of seals, sea lions, sea otters and gull chicks. Then we visited Moss Landing Marine Lab and participated in a beach clean-up. On our third day we went tide pooling and hiked at Ano Nuevo State Park. What did we do?
Preparing for our trip
To prepare for our trip, we studied maps of Monterey and learned about marine mammals we would see at the aquarium and in the wild. By the time our trip started we knew about otters, sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, and dolphins. The beautiful jelly exhibit at the Monterey Aquarium and drawing (left) by Melissa Burman Tamara Williams' interpretation of the kelp forest A leopard shark in a tidepool near Cannery Row "July 2nd 2003, we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was my first time being there so it was such an exciting experience. I got to see plenty of fish, kelp, and sharks, but my favorite one was the murre bird. The murre bird was so fast underwater that you could barely see it. All of the creatures were so cute but I made a list of the ones I liked the most they are:

http://www.id.ucsb.edu/lovelab/otter.html
I'm not overly fond of sea otters. Despite this outpouring of emotion, I still think otters are overrated. Now, I don't want a flood of anguished letters calling me bad names and casting aspersions upon my character. For one thing there's not that much to cast aspersions upon. So, save yourself some time. Don't hobble over to your writing desk, pull out that hideous monogrammed stationary, put quill to paper and pen some quasi-coherent complaint. I'm not suggesting we turn otters into hats. I just think the hoopla is overblown. And why don't I slobber all over these furry little creatures, these cuddly little denizens that look like they come straight out of some aquatic Lord of the Rings? Well, my friends, it comes down to a simple thing called Values. That's right, it all comes down to Values and, more particularly, to the obvious lack of values displayed by sea otters. Let's just look at a few of the more egregious examples. No Self Control Hey, what can I say? This is supposed to be the Age of Self Control. From governments to individuals, the cry rings out "Live within your means. Show some restraint". But do sea otters exhibit such responsibility? I think not.

Sea otters once lived along most of the coastal North Pacific Ocean. That was before fur traders hunted them for their thick, luxurious pelts. By the year 1900, sea otters were nearly extinct. Today they're protected. The California population is still smallabout 2,000 sea otters spread over only about 226 km (140 mi.) of central California coastline. California sea otters are listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

Alaska sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) are totally West Coast, man. They're found entirely in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. When they're kicking back in the water, they're constantly grooming their fur to keep it dry. The rest of the time, they're sleeping and nibbling on some kind of seafood. Not a bad way to spend your day, don't you think? Get a taste of their leisurely lifestyle when you visit the Oceanarium at Shedd Aquarium.
Although the Pacific Coast offers sea otters an ideal environment to live in, it's in these same waters that their survival is threatened for a second time. An international law passed in 1911 put a stop to the trade of fur pelts by Russian, American and English fur traders. This law, in conjunction with the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1973, helped increase sea otter populations.
Because sea otters rely on their dense fur for warmth, they're extremely vulnerable to the effects of an oil spill. If an otter swims in oil, its fur loses its insulating ability. Cold water can then penetrate the skin and cause hypothermia, eventually leading to death. But while these laws have helped certain populations of the sea otter to rise to between 100,000 and 150,000, the California population has had difficulties recovering from its threatened status. Various factors, including offshore petroleum development, have made it difficult for the government to establish programs that preserve the sea otter and satisfy all the needs of the public at the same time.

CALIFORNIA SEA OTTERS IN BIG SUR Where to find them: Sea otters can be found throughout Big Sur. You'll see them swimming in and around the kelp forests. When the sea otters are eating, you'll see them lying on their back, like the otter on the right who is happily munching an Abalone, a Sea Otters favorite food. California Sea Otters Make a Dramatic Recovery
The California, or southern, sea otter survived a close brush with extinction early in this century, but today, under the protection of the Endangered Species Act, it is expanding its range and increasing its numbers. By the 1930's, most people believed that this subspecies of sea otter had vanished, wiped out by fur traders who coveted its rich pelt. In 1938, however, a small group of otters was discovered living near the mouth of Bixby Creek along California's Big Sur coast. From those few survivors, the otter has increased its numbers to more than 2,000 today. Growth has been particularly impressive during the past decade, when otter numbers increased by nearly 50%.

    Physical description
With long, streamlined bodies, Sea Otters are built for life at sea. Exceptionally dense brown fur insulates the animal and retains air, creating an effective barrier between the water and the skin; this is important, as the otters lack insulating fat. Underneath each powerful front flipper is a pouch of skin used to temporarily store food collected during extended dives to the bottom. The front flippers also have retractile claws, while the hind flippers are longer, broadly flattened and webbed. They have a fairly short, thick muscular tail.

The basking animal is likely to be a sea otter. "They're the teddy bears of the ocean," says C.J. Casson. He's curator of mammals and birds at the Seattle Aquarium. A sea otter lolling in the water. Seattle Aquarium Floating on a bed of seaweed or cracking a clam on its chest, a sea otter looks as if it doesn't have a care in the world. Otter researchers such as Casson know better. For 150 years, sea otters were hunted so heavily for their fur that, by 1910, they had disappeared from the waters off Washington and Oregon. They've made a comeback in Washington with help from scientists and conservationists. But, according to ocean mammal researcher Ed Bowlby, Washington's otters aren't out of the woods yet. And other groups of sea otters in California and Alaska have taken a turn for the worse. California otters seem to be getting sick more often than they used to. In Alaska, the rapid loss of sea otters turns out to have a shocking cause. Killer whales have started eating them.
