Research Report The Sea Otter
By Eric D. What animal spends almost half of its day cleaning its fur? What animal eats while lying on its back? It's the sea otter, of course. There's lots of other interesting things to learn about the sea otter. The sea otter is a mammal that has thick, soft, brown-black fur with a bit of gray in it. On a large otter, there are about 650,000 hairs for each square inch of fur. The otter needs this thick fur to keep warm because it doesn't have blubber like other marine mammals do. Air gets trapped in the otter's fur coat. This helps the otter keep warm and prevents it from sinking in the water. The sea otter is about four feet long. The males weigh about 654 pounds, and the females weigh about 45 pounds. Sea otters a have a strong sense of smell, sharp eyesight, and excellent hearing. They also have strong, sharp teeth to help them tear their food apart. The sea otter lives in only a few places in the world. One place is in the shallow waters off Alaska. Other places are the Commander Islands, the Aleutian Islands, and the coast of northern Japan. Another place is in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California from Santa Cruz to Point Conception. The sea otter has one pretty unusual feeding habit. It lies on its back with a rock on its stomach and smashes open its food on the rock with its paws. It's one of only a few animals that use tools. The sea otter likes to eat crabs, shrimp, sea urchins, turban snails, and abalone. It also likes to eat shellfish, mussels, and rock oysters.

The biology of animals that have been traditionally hunted are usually well known. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Enhydra lutris , the sea otter, was heavily exploited by man, prized universally for its exceptionally warm, sheik and tremendously valuable pelt. Subsequently, in order to maximize harvest yield, the human predatory machine studied sea otter biology intently. This cute, furry, charismatic species was so well hunted that it was extirpated along most of its historical range in North America. A second wave of study in sea otter biology was initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century in efforts to prevent the animal's extinction. Recent studies of E. lutris appear to emerge from all areas of science. Currently, numerous scientific papers are being published on many different scales in the disciplines of physiology, ecology, behaviour, pathology, and conservation of this animal. The resources utilized in the synthesis of this page represent a very minute fraction of the myriad of past and current publications dedicated to Enhydra lutris Systematics
The sea otter ( Enhydra lutris , Linnaeus 1758) is the only member of the genus Enhydra (Fig.1). It is the largest member of the family Mustelidae which includes approximately 70 species; the otter is also the smallest marine mammal and is the only one in the order Carnivora. Based on morphological differences in color, body and skull sizes, three sub-species of sea otters have been proposed historically:

A: There are so many different seal species in the world that its difficult to say what they can eat in a day. The harbour seals at the Vancouver aquarium eat an average of 8.1 percent of their body weight each day. That's a lot of food! If a 100 pound human had to eat eight percent of his weight each day it would mean consuming about eight pounds of food. The average lifespan of all pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and walruses) is about 15-25 years.

The lively sea otters on exhibit came to the aquarium as stranded pups. They don’t have the skills to survive in the wild. You can watch aquarists feed and train our sea otters during our daily Sea Otter Program at 10:30, 1:30 and 3:30. Training keeps our otters mentally and physically stimulated; it also makes working with the otters safer for us and less stressful for them. One favorite otter toy is called a "food tube." Trainers freeze food inside, then it's up to the otters to figure out how to get it out. While some marine mammals have a thick layer of fat to keep out the cold, a sea otter's wrapped in the world's densest fur. On the second floor of the exhibit, you can watch sea otters at the surface, while first-floor windows give an underwater view. The otters like to crunch on ice cubes which is somewhat like having to crack through the hard shells of the food they usually eat. Our exhibit otters are sometimes behind the scenes serving as companions and surrogate mothers to rescued otter pups. Our Sea Otter Research and Conservation program's goal is to discover why California's otter population is in crisis and how we can help.

Sea Otter Cam
A lot of different activities go on in our sea otter exhibit. We feed out otters four times a day but you might not recognize the food at first. We often put the food into toys, like food tubes, that stimulate the otters' natural behavior of pounding and working to get food out of shells.
Our aquarists also teach the otters behaviors, like walking onto a scale or into a kennel, or holding a target with their paws to focus their attention and keep still.
Otter Time Out
You might not always see the same otters on exhibit. Toola and Joy, two unreleasable females acting as surrogate mothers in the Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) program take turns on exhibit. And our exhibit otter, Rosa, is sometimes behind the scenes as a surrogate mother raising SORAC pups.

Species Profile: Sea Otter
Enhydra lutris
The sea Otter is perhaps the best known otters. When you think of an otter, most probably the first thing that comes to your mind is the cute, cuddily face of the Southern Sea Otter. There are, in fact, two kinds of Sea Otters, Southern Sea Otters, which live more to the south than Alaskan Sea Otters. Other than the distinction in size and habitat, they are very much alike.
Sea Otters are unique marine mammals in that they use tools such as rocks to open their prey such as the shells of abalone. These social otters float in rafts in the Pacific Ocean just offshore. They have extraordinarily dense fur to keep them warm and are the heaviest otter species.

Next: North American River Otter Galleries Bottom Size From the head to the body it is 550 mm. to 1300 mm., the tail is 125 mm. to 330 mm., making the total length from 675 mm. to 1630 mm. Now that is BIG! Sea Otters are the heaviest of all the otters, and with the males weighing up to 45 kg that is not hard to believe. Feet The Sea Otter has small fore paws that have no noticeable fingers. The back paws look a lot like flippers because of the webbed toes. When swimming underwater, the Sea Otter is a great navigator. The hind feet push the sea otter foward in great swoops, and the front paws pull it along. The paws do not look really sensitive or manipulative, but surprisingly they are quite agile. Sea Otters have short semi-retractable claws on their paws. The otters can rub, roll, pull, and twist with lots of strength. They are agile enough to take buttons, belts, rings, and things in pockets with ease that only comes from pickpockets. The Sea Otter will use its paws to stash food from the bottom of the ocean in baggy pockets of skin under its forelegs. Once back on the top, floating comfortably on its back and anchored to kelp, the Otter will retrieve the food, sometimes opening it with a rock on its belly, and enjoy its meal.

Sea otters are sleek, furry, streamlined marine mammals that live along rocky Pacific Ocean coasts, bays, and kelp beds. They are found from the coast of California through Alaska and along the eastern coast of Russia to northern Japan. This type of weasel spends most of its time in the water, where it is fast and graceful; it is slow and awkward on land. The scientific name is Enhydra lutris (Genus species). The sea otter is a protected species because of previous overhunting (they were once hunted for their thick, dense fur). Anatomy : Sea otters are up to about 4 feet (1.3 meters) long and weigh from 45 to 82 pounds (20-37 kilograms). They have webbed hind feet which they use to swim; the forefeet are smaller. The claws are semi-retractible. The ears and nostrils close when the otter is underwater. Sea otters sleep and rest on their backs, usually anchored in a kelp (seaweed) bed.

Sea Otter Research at WERC
Sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) are keystone predators in the nearshore environment of the eastern Pacific Ocean, in a food web composed of sea otter, sea urchin, and kelp forest. Without sea otters, the kelp forest can be overgrazed by sea urchins, which in turn can affect other species that depend on this ecosystem. The geographical range once extended across the North Pacific Ocean from the central Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico, to northern Japan. Prior to the Pacific maritime fur trade, which began with the discovery of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands by the Bering Expedition in the mid-1700s, sea otters probably occurred at high densities more or less continuously throughout this region. However, the species was systematically hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the 19th century. Sea otters were afforded protection from further take in 1911. About a dozen remnant colonies survived at the time of protection, and with protection these colonies began to recover. Populations in California and Alaska (Aleutian Archipelago) have declined in recent years. The California population was listed as "threatened" in 1977 under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Research on sea otters is mandated by the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

The information gathered in the surveys will be used by federal and state wildlife agencies in making decisions about the management of this sea mammal.

California Sea Otter Surveys
The surveys, conducted cooperatively by scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Monterey Bay Aquarium with the help of experienced volunteers, cover about 375 miles of California coast, from Half Moon Bay south to Santa Barbara. The information gathered will be used by federal and state wildlife agencies in making decisions about the management of this sea mammal. Spring survey results are used as an indicator of the population trend of California sea otters. No single year's survey result is indicative of a population change, however. To reduce the influence of anomalously high or low counts during any particular year, three-year running averages of the survey results are also used to assess whether the population is growing or declining. Factors that can influence the count include viewing conditions, abundance and species composition of surface canopy kelp, observer experience, and distribution and movements of the animals.

meaning of scientific name: otter DESCRIPTION: Sea otters are members of the weasel or mustelid family. Like other members of this family, they have very thick fur. In fact, at 850,000 to one million hairs per square inch, they have the thickest fur of any mammal. Their fur actually consists of two layers, an undercoat and longer guard hairs. This system traps a layer of air next to their skin so their skin does not get wet. Sea otters are usually dark brown, often with lighter guard hairs. Alaskan sea otters tend to have lighter fur on their heads. Sea otters are the smallest marine mammal. Adult females weigh 35-60 pounds (16-27 kg); males reach up to 90 pounds (40 kg). Alaskan sea otters are bigger with males weighing up to 100 pounds (45 kg). RANGE/HABITAT: Sea otters once ranged from Mexico to Alaska and even to Japan. Currently, the California population numbers around 2,000 and is found from Half Moon Bay to Morro Bay. There is a much larger population in Alaska, and sea otters are still found in Russia. Sea otters inhabit shallow coastal areas and prefer places with kelp. The kelp acts as an anchor that the sea otters use to wrap themselves in when they are resting.

Alaskan population to get federal protection after dramatic decline
Al Grillo / AP file
Alaska's sea otters, seen here in the waters off of the Aleutian Island of Adak, have faced a dramatic decline in numbers.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Southwest Alaska's sea otters, which came back from the brink of extinction in the 1800s, are facing another dramatic decline and could be named a "threatened" species as early as Tuesday. There are no clear answers why the population across a wide swath of Alaska has plummeted or how to reverse the decline, said Douglas Burn, leader of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's sea otter program. "It is a complex task, partly because we don't know with 100 percent certainty how we got here," Burn said. Protection as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act is a start to finding those answers. Once a notice is published in the Federal Register, which Burn expects to happen Tuesday, the Fish and Wildlife Service will be required to come up with a recovery plan.
