By Joseph Grasso, D.O.
Osteopathy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D in 1874. Dr. Still was a both a physician and a minister. He treated his patients using what medical discipline that was available at the time and became increasingly frustrated with the severe toxicity associated with those treatments. He was ultimately propelled to find a different way when three of his sons died of spinal meningitis as he was helpless and could not offer them any treatment. Osteopathy Gains Recognition

TMJ and Cranial Osteopathy Treatment
By Lina Garcia, DMD, DDS TMJ pain, and or migraine headaches tend to have some or all of the following signs, and symptoms. Observable signs include: 1 - Locking or clicking of one or both lower jaw joints (TMJ), with or without pain.
2 - Limited jaw opening.
3 - Facial asymmetry with one side puffier than the other.
4 - A protruded lower jaw - this compromises the airway so the head is held forward (the forward head posture strains the cervical vertebrae - the thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae must compensate, and now either one shoulder or hip is lower than the other). The primary symptoms include: 1 - An intolerance of light, requiring sunglasses during the day, and difficult driving at night.

This collaborative programme between Keele University and The College of Osteopaths offers adults of any age the first ever opportunity to study osteopathy in a degree-level programme without having to travel to the southern half of the country! It also offers the flexible option of part-time study, making Osteopathy more accessible to those with other commitments. The programme has been fully validated by Keele University. As is standard with new professional programmes, the Keele programme has yet to be accredited by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), the statutory regulatory body for osteopaths. Accreditation is necessary in order that graduates, on completion of the programme, can be eligible for registration to practise as an osteopath, a legal requirement in the UK.

Andrew Taylor Still
Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O.
Donor: Museum Collection [2000.34.05] The Father of Osteopathic Medicine
Andrew Taylor Still was born on August 6, 1828, in a log cabin in Lee County, Virginia. The third of nine children born to Abram and Martha Still, young Andrew led a typical frontier boy's life, with plenty of hard work and intermittent schooling. His father was a Methodist circuit-riding preacher and a physician, whose work led the family to move several times between 1834 and 1841, to circuits in Tennessee and Missouri. Finally, in 1851, Abram was assigned to head up the Wakarusa Shawnee Mission in Kansas. At least part of the reason he received this assignment was to get him out of Missouri, a pro-slavery state where his strong anti-slavery sermons were getting an increasingly hostile reception. Andrew Still, by then married with two young children, followed his parents to Kansas in 1853. It was about this time that he decided to become a physician. It was common practice in those days for a would-be doctor to train by studying medical books and working with a practicing physicianin this case, his father. He may have received additional, formal training at a school in Kansas City, but no records remain to establish where and when this training took place.

CMO
It is important that breeders realize that this disease can be passed on to future generations by breeding treated animals. Even though the treated animal no longer displays clinical signs of this disorder, he/she is still a carrier of the gene for this genetic fault, thereby creating a genetic liability in the bloodline of the breed. This is also known as an autosomal recessive trait
Following is a short explanation of how an autosomal recessive trait is passed from one set of parents to the offspring.
The capital " D " represents the dominant gene, which in this case, is free, or clear, of the disorder. The lower case " r " is the recessive characteristic, which in this case is the disorder, CMO. If the sire and dam of the puppy are not carriers of a disease, for our purposes CMO, than all the "get" from their breeding will be free of the disease. Should one of the parents be a carrier of CMO, than 50% of the "get" from this breeding will become carriers of CMO. The question remains, which ones are the carriers? Remember these are projections by statistics. It could be more than 50%, it could be less. Do you as a breeder, want to take the chance of infecting your entire bloodline with a genetic fault? Should both parent be carriers of CMO, than, 25% will be free of the disease, 50% will be carriers, and 25% will have clinical signs of the disease.

What is the SCC?
The SCC is an independent post graduate teaching organisation that was founded in 1993.We have a commitment to promoting and teaching the principles of osteopathy as conceived by A.T. Still, and developed by W.G. Sutherland. With this work increasingly in demand from both within the osteopathic profession and from the public, it is important to be able to recognise practitioners who are skilled in using Osteopathy in the Cranial Field. To fulfil this need, the
