In May 2000, osteopaths became the first complementary practitioners to become regulated by Government statute in the same way as orthodox medical practitioners. This means that they must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council, have completed a recognised training and have indemnity insurance. As from June 2001, chiropractors have been subject to similar regulation; practitioners need to be registered with the General Chiropractic Council. It is now illegal to set up in practice as an osteopath or chiropractor without such registration. Increasingly, GPs are referring their patients to an osteopath or chiropractor for problems originating in bones, joints, muscles and other soft tissue and, above all, for non-specific back pain that arises from minor ‘mechanical' damage - often from a cause that cannot be identified by orthodox means – and not as a symptom of a diagnosed disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. Osteopathy
The underlying philosophy is that the body has a natural tendency to heal itself but that this ability can be disrupted by any abnormalities in the skeleton or the soft tissue (such as muscles and ligaments) or in the relationship between them. After taking a detailed history and observing your posture and movement, the osteopath will use his or her hands to apply pressure and manipulate the relevant parts of the body to release stresses and tension and mobilise joints.

Welcome to the Sunningdale Osteopathic Clinic
The Sunningdale Osteopathic Clinic is ideally situated for patients in the Sunningdale, Sunninghill, Ascot, Windlesham, Bagshot, Lightwater, Chobham, Virginia Water and Egham areas, but is only 20 minutes or so from further areas such as Bracknell, Windsor and Staines.
Osteopathy is very effective in helping with both recent and (especially) longer standing pain from any part of the musculo-skeletal system. Although spinal problems are generally about 50% of what we treat, we are just as interested in peripheral joint and muscular problems. Treatment, which is mostly done using the osteopath's hands, is precise and is directed at helping the problem as quickly as possible. Treatment is always appropriate for the patient and their problem.

Description
This book is a textbook of basic osteopathic concepts, working from first principles underpinned by anatomy and physiology. This text will synthesize and integrate osteopathic models in an easy-to-understand way, a subject often daunting to students and confusing to graduates. Composed of four sections, the first is a discussion of basic principles, the second focusses on models and diagnosis of treatment which is followed by anatomical, neurophysiological and osteopathic considerations. The last section describes clinical case-studies to enable students to put into practice the theories and models which they have learned. This book is essential reading for all osteopathic BSc degree courses and a core textbook for undergraduate students.

Osteopathy
Osteopathy is ideal for most sports injuries.  It focuses on the musculo-skeletal system (the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues) and the way this interrelates with the body as a whole.
What is involved?
Assessment: Includes full history of the injury and any previous injuries, occupation, sports participation, general health and so on.  Static and dynamic examination of the problem area and any other areas of the body which may be involved in the course or effects of an injury. Treatment:   Osteopathic treatment is hands-on and may include stretching of shortened soft tissues, rhythmic joint mobilisations and manipulative thrust techniques. These are designed to improve healing potential and restore full ranges of movement. Follow up:   Advice on self-care is always given to maximise the effects of treatment and minimise the possibility of recurrence.  This may include specific exercises, technique tips, postural advice etc. Gerry Gallacher BDS, BSc (Hons) degree.  Qualified from the British School of Osteopathy in London and is registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body. Osteopaths believe that if the body is functioning to the best of its ability, then its own in-built healing mechanism can function effectively.
Osteopathy is a complementary therapy to orthodox medicine. Osteopaths are trained as primary health care practitioners and patients often seek treatment from an osteopath without referral from their GP.
The prime focus of most osteopaths is the musculoskeletal system, muscles, bones and joints, which are vital to the healthy functioning of the body as a whole.
Osteopathy is primarily a manual treatment. With emphasis based inthe fine determination of the quality of tissues, or the movement of joint by feel (palpation). Rather than diagnosing and treating symptoms, the osteopath seeks the underlying causes and treats them, i.e. those factors that predispose and maintain the condition. The patient as a whole is evaluated. A wide range of techniques are at the disposal of an osteopath as part of treatment, which is gentle and management may involve recommendations on posture, diet, exercise.

Osteopathy
What is osteopathy? Osteopathy is a therapy, which uses manipulation to treat a wide range of health problems directly or indirectly relating to the muscles, joints and ligaments of the body. The therapy is based upon the principle that restoring harmony and balance to the musculoskeletal system influences all levels of the body. What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can alleviate a wide range of conditions and is suitable for all ages. Examples of some conditions that may be treated include aches and pains in the back, arms and legs, and shoulder and neck tension. However, you do not have to be in pain to benefit from osteopathy; you may just feel generally achy or have occasional pains. The therapy boosts the body's natural healing capacity, restoring harmony. Where there is a condition for which osteopathy is not appropriate, referral to another health care practitioner will be discussed. All consultations are confidential. What will happen when I come for a consultation?
