Here are some good 'definitions' of what Osteopathy is:
"Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which emphasises methods of recognising and alleviating structural and mechanical problems of the body."
(Lord Walton, House of Lords, Second Reading of the Osteopaths Bill, 27.5.93)
"Osteopathy is a distinctive health care profession, which facilitates the realisation of healthy integrated functioning in the individual, by restoring, sustaining and enhancing homoeostasis of the neuro~musculo~skeletal system, evaluating and treating by palpation and manual intervention, complemented by health education approaches. It recognises the primacy of the therapeutic relationship and is based on principles first enunciated by Andrew Taylor Still."
(The GCRO Competence Exercise Committee 1992)
"Osteopathic medicine is a philosophy of health care and a distinctive art, supported by expanding scientific knowledge; its philosophy embraces the concept of the unity of the living organism's structure (anatomy) and function (physiology). Its art is the application of the philosophy in the practice of medicine and surgery in all its branches and specialties. Its science includes the behavioural, chemical, physical, spiritual and biological knowledge related to the establishment and maintenance of health as well as the prevention and alleviation of disease."

Few births are "easy" for either mother or child; the mother's pelvis and pelvic floor have to accommodate the turbulent passage of the infant, whilst the infant is forcibly squeezed out of the womb through the dilated cervix and then is subjected to a series of twists and turns as it passes through the birth canal to be ejected from the warm, comfortable womb into the cold light of day.
This short journey is probably one of the most difficult we ever encounter, but it was what we were designed to do, and there are helpful measures to ease the passage, such as flexibility of the bones of the head, including their ability to overlap, and maternal hormones that allow the pelvic ligaments to give enough to widen the pelvic outlet width. Problems can arise from this journey, but more usually they occur if the overall plan is altered.
Often the strong contractions will begin without enough cervical dilation, so the baby's head won't fit through the exit from the womb. The baby is forced, head downwards, onto the unyielding cervix and pelvic bones. The large forces produced by such repetitive movements can not only traumatise the baby's soft, flexibly boned head, but also cause the infant physiological and psychological stress.
As the baby leaves the womb it enters the birth canal where it has to undergo a number of twists and turns before it finally arrives into the world. These twists and turns help to mould the baby's head, but problems can occur if either the baby's passage is too fast, when the head doesn't get enough time to get properly moulded, or if it gets stuck and it's too slow, the head and body can get squashed and the baby can get very stressed.

124. David Propert - Registered Osteopath
Practitioner in cranial and other forms of osteopathy, based in central London. Lecturer in physiology.
http://www.martex.co.uk/osteopaths/davidpropert
Welcome to the David Propert web site! David Propert graduated from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) and established a state of the art clinic at Dolphin Square in 1993. The practice is located within a newly refurbished health and sports complex offering a fully integrated service. David's patients can benefit from easy access to the on-site swimming pool, gym and squash courts which may form part of the assessment or rehabilitation programme. For example, gait analysis on a treadmill can often highlight problems which might not be apparent at rest. A bespoke training schedule can be formulated as necessary and then closely monitored. When not at Dolphin Square, David is involved with Osteopathic education as a Physiology lecturer, supervising students at an NHS practice and running a specialist Sports Injuries clinic at the BSO. His expertise in treating amateur and professional sportspeople has developed from postgraduate training as well as working within a healthcare team. David treats a wide variety of people with conditions ranging from the classic 'bad back' to sinus problems. He is also qualified in Cranial Osteopathy which, being very gentle, is well suited to babies, children and the elderly. Contact Details

Description: Craniomandibular osteopathy or osteoarthropathy is a noncancerous growth of bone on the lower jaw bone (ramus of the mandible) or over the angle of the mandible and tympanic bulla. In most instances it is bilateral, but this is not always true. The bone is dense and hard and has a rough surface that can usually be detected on palpation by an experienced person. Early in the disease there is an inflammatory component. The disease is painful to the puppy and is usually first recognized when a puppy shows discomfort while chewing or when his mouth is being examined. The bony growth can occasionally occur on other parts of the cranium, and the radius and ulna may also be involved. By casual examination, the jaw may not appear enlarged or abnormal. Age of Onset: The disease is most often recognized between the ages of 4 and 7 months, but it can occur as early as 3 - 4 weeks and rarely as late as 9 - 10 months. Experienced breeders and veterinarians usually recognize it earlier than 4 months of age by clinical signs or by palpation. Diagnosis: The disease is most often diagnosed by clinical signs and palpation with definitive confirmation by lateral and/or ventral/dorsal radiographs of the skull, depending on the location of the specific lesion. All board-certified radiologists can diagnose the disease, as can many other experienced veterinarians.

While attending their own medical schools, DOs are responsible for the same academic discipline as their MD colleagues and receive an additional 300 to 500 hours in the study of the body's musculoskeletal system. Physicians who wish to pursue the field of Cranial Osteopathy must train an additional five years in practice to be certified in this area of expertise. History of Osteopathy Osteopathic medicine, which incorporates Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), is a fully recognized diagnostic and therapeutic system founded by Andrew Taylor Still, MD in 1874. Controversial at first, this system opposed much of the established medical practices of the 1800's and early 1900's; which was often characterized by multiple schools of healing, many of dubious value, and supported physicians who were often poorly or incompletely trained. Treatments such as bloodletting and the use of purgatives, mercury, and alcohol-based compounds were very common. Still's own background was somewhat unique from his contemporaries at the time and earned him recognition in the Smithsonian Institute. He was the son of a Methodist minister and attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Kansas City, Kansas. Still also served as a state legislator and enlisted in the Ninth Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War. After the war, Still provided health care to settlers and American Indians. While facing the epidemics of the period (cholera, pneumonia, smallpox, meningitis, diphtheria, and tuberculosis) which had claimed much of his family, he became increasingly dissatisfied with the prevailing medical practices.

http://www.posturepage.com/osteopathy/
OSTEOPATHY AND POSTURE Osteopathic treatment concentrates on the relationship between the structure of the body - the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue - and the way in which the body moves and functions. The literal meaning of the word osteopathy is 'bone disease' - a rather unfortunate term that does nothing to evoke the great benefits of this safe, natural system of diagnosis and treatment. To an osteopath, the body functions as a complete, working system, so any problems affecting its structure, upset the balance of our general health. For this reason, an osteopath will not simply want to ease the pain and stiffness in your neck, but also want to know what is causing that pain, which could be anything from physical injury to mental anxiety. The therapy was devised in the 19th century by an American doctor, Andrew Taylor Still. He became disillusioned with medicine when three of his children died of viral meningitis. Still sought an alternative in the philosophy of Hippocrates, who claimed that the 'cure of disease lies within the body'. An interest in osteopathy developed through his belief that tension in muscles and misaligned bones places unnecessary strain on the body. This strain can be caused by any number of things, such as physical injury, bad posture, or by emotions such as anger and fear. Whatever the cause, Still believed it could be eased by adjusting the framework of the body, so that all the systems within it would run smoothly and the body could heal itself. Of all the bone structures in the body, Still considered the vertebrae of the spine to be the most important. Still's reasoning was simple: the spine protects the spinal cord, a major part of the nervous system, and the nervous system penetrates every area of the body, controlling voluntary and involuntary movement and registering every sensation, from the most delicate smell, to tortuous pain. Still believed that anything interfering with the nervous system could resonate in every area of the body.

Osteopathy The practice of Osteopathy is a scientific adjustment by mechanical manipulations of the joints, muscles, tissues and viscera to promote the circulation and allow the vital fluids to circulate without interruption. It stipulates that disease is caused by abnormal changes in the tissues of ligaments, muscles and organs as well as in the position and mobility of the bones wherever situated in the body. The practice of Osteopathy is done by a Osteopath and is based upon a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and hygiene. Osteopathy involves the treatment of vertebral column, joint, bone, muscle and tissue in the whole body. Structural derangement or lesion is considered the most important underlying cause of disease. A lesion may be in bony, muscular, ligamentous, facial, or other tissues. It results in lack of normal movement in surrounding tissues allowing blood and lymph to stagnate, causing acidosis, irritating nerves which pass that way and through them affecting the functions of various organs including blood vessels. The theory evolved was that if there was a displacement of the spine the Osteopathic lesion would prevent the free flow of blood through the body and the specific organs. If the life-force inside people; the blood, was impeded this would cause an alteration of functioning elsewhere which in turn would cause disease or allow the body to become diseased.
