Introduction
Osteopathy is an established and recognised system of diagnosis and treatment, which places emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. It recognises that much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the structure of the body, resulting in disturbed function.
The basic premise of osteopathy is that the body is capable of healing itself, given the appropriate environment, both within the body and externally. It shares many similarities with conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. In addition, osteopaths assess their patients from a mechanical, functional and postural perspective.
The manual systems of treatment used are tailored to the needs of the individual. Osteopathic techniques aim to ensure that there is adequate flow of blood to all tissues and organ systems, to remove strains and tensions within the muscles, and promote good movement through joint complexes.

Osteopathy with Acupuncture in Barnet North London with Jeanette Thomson
CELEBRATING 21 YEARS IN PRACTICE IN NORTH LONDON! I qualified in Osteopathic Medicine and Naturopathy in 1982 and qualified in Homeopathic Medicine in 1985. I am a member of the Osteopathic Sports Care Association and trained in acupuncture with Dr. Campbell at The Royal Homeopathic Hospital. I've travelled widely attending conferences and teaching in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I recently contributed to Health Which? magazine (August 2003) "Yoga and Pilates -are your Instructors Qualified?"
I have two practices - one in BARNET, North London (020 8275 9435) and
another practice in CROUCH END, North London (mobile: 07887907026). They are both multi-cultural so I have lots of experiences dealing with many different cultures.
My treatments often combine acupuncture and homeopathic medicine with osteopathy, naturopathy and laser therapy. Other treatments such as therapeutic massage, relation therapy, reflexology and cranial osteopathy are used when indicated.
In North London the two practices are within easy reach of Crouch End, Barnet, Muswell Hill, Mill Hill, Finchley and Potters Bar.

Medical Reference Alternative / Complementary Medicine ... Treatment Options Osteopathy What is osteopathy? What is the history of osteopathy?
Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still. Still was a Missouri physician who had become frustrated with what he viewed to be the ineffective and hazardous nature of remedies at that time. He believed that the doctor's role in combating disease was to restore proper musculoskeletal function to the body. Despite mainstream opposition, Still founded the American School of Osteopathy in Missouri in 1892. The school taught manual manipulation, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications rather than surgery and drug therapies. In 1896, Vermont became the first state to license DOs and the American Osteopathic Association was formed in 1901 to regulate the profession. Even with these important milestones, those in conventional medicine continued to disapprove of osteopathy until 1962 when DOs had full practice rights in all 50 states. By 1973, the California Medical Association invited DOs to join and become voting members. Today, doctors of osteopathy (D.O.s) receive the same basic training as medical doctors (M.D.s), and D.O.s also learn manipulation therapies (hands-on adjustments of muscles, bones, and ligaments) and use these in addition to more conventional medical treatments. Most D.O.s are primary care practitioners, specializing in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or pediatrics. A few can be found in other medical specialties as well.

What is osteopath?
Osteopathy is a system of medicine that provides skilled diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of complaints resulting from disturbances of the bodys framework and moving parts. Osteopathy is primarily concerned with the stucture and function of the body, in particular the bones, joints, ligaments and connective tissues. What to expect on your first consultation: We consider each person as an individual. On your first visit we will spend time taking a detailed medical case history followed by a thorough physical examination which may involve a series of simple movements. This combined with the case history will allow a full diagnosis of the presenting problem, this will result in a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Treatment itself: Treatment is based on the individual needs of the patient. Technique's may typically range from stretching and massage of the soft tissues combined with specific joint articulation. An alternative to this is a widely used technique called "Cranial Osteopathy"a very relaxing form of treatment which works through influencing the flow of "CSF" via gentle manipulation of the skull bones. All treatment goals are aimed at restoring healthy joints, muscles and full fange of movement. About the practitioner:

  • What else is a Doctor of Osteopathy known as? WHAT IS A DOCTOR OF OSTEOPATHY? A Doctor of Osteopathy (often abbreviated D.O.) is a health professional that has earned a degree of Doctor of Osteopathy after studying and graduating from a course of study at an approved medical school. Osteopathy is an approach to medicine that uses common medical procedures, but it places a greater emphasis on understanding the relationship between the organs, muscles, nerves, tissues, bones (such as those that surround the spine), and tendons, than traditional medical training does. HOW DOES SOMEONE BECOME A DOCTOR OF OSTEOPATHY AND WHAT DO THEY DO? People that go to medical school to become a Doctor of Osteopathy usually emphasized science courses when they were in college. There are four basic years of medical school that must be completed. The medical student must pass tests known as the National Board Examination to earn a D.O. This test is usually given in the second year of medical school, the last year of medical school, and after medical school. To learn more about specific osteopathic medical schools in the U.S., visit the website of The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine After graduating medical school, a D.O. usually gains additional training in a hospital for about two years. This additional training is known as residency or internship. After this training, the D.O. usually begins his or her own private practice or goes on to get additional training in a specific field of medicine. The length of this training will depend on the area in which one specializes in. In order to practice medicine, however, the D.O. needs to get a license in the state that he/she wants to practice in.

Offers a 4year program that results in the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Information on the college, admission procedure, and the field of osteopathy.

Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine
Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM) is the 19th school of osteopathic medicine in the country. Pikeville College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, baccalaureate, and doctoral degrees. PCSOM offers a four-year program that results in the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). This is followed by one year of a rotating internship and two to five years of residency, depending upon which specialty is selected. PCSOM is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Professional Education. You are more than just the sum of your body parts. That’s why doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s) practice a "whole person" approach to health care. Instead of just treating specific symptoms, osteopathic physicians concentrate on treating you as a whole. Osteopathic physicians understand how all the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. They focus special attention on the musculoskeletal system, which reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems. This system of bones and muscles makes up about two-thirds of the body’s mass, and a routine part of the osteopathic patient examination is a careful evaluation of these important structures. D.O.s know that the body’s structure plays a critical role in its ability to function. They can use their eyes and hands to identify structural problems and to support the body’s natural tendency toward health and self-healing.
