by Viola Frymann, D.O., F.A.A.O., F.C.A.
First of all, I would like to talk about Osteopathy in general. I would like to enlighten you about the differences between the way in which a medically trained physician thinks and the way an osteopathically trained physician thinks about a problem.
When your child was born it was, first of all, evaluated by the pediatrician. He was looking to make sure there was no congenital defect, either externally visible or invisible, such as perhaps in his lungs or the heart or the digestive tract, and also to make sure that all the systems were functioning efficiently.
As osteopathic physicians we are looking at something more when your baby is born, because we recognize that the process of being born is probably the most traumatic experience that most people ever have.

Osteopathy for back pain
Clinical bottom line
Osteopathic spinal manipulation was no better than standard medical therapy for low back pain, but reduces NSAID use
Reference
GB Andersson et al. A comparison of osteopathic spinal manipulation with standard care for patients with low back pain. New England Journal of Medicine 1999 341: 1426-1431.
Study
Patients aged 20-59 with low back pain lasting at least three weeks but less than six months were the target population. A range of sensible exclusions were made, from root nerve compressions and other neurological causes of the back pain, to pregnancy. The presence of a lesion suitable for manipulation was comfirmed by a doctyor of psteopathy. Patients were then randomised to osteopathic manipulation, or standard medical treatment. The osteopathic treatment was given by one of three physicians at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Standard medical care involved using analgesics and other therapies like heat, cold, corsets and TENS. Osteopathy was in addition to this, and all patients saw a 10 minute educational video on back pain. Outcomes were a number of pain and back scales and questionnaires, plus measurements of flexion and extension. These were done on the 12th week by an evaluator who was blind to the treament allocation, and who was not connected to partcipants, therapists or organiser of the triall.

About Osteopathy
Osteopathy (including Cranial Osteopathy) takes advantage of the body's natural tendency to strive toward a state of health and homeostasis. A much in demand specialty, the Osteopath is trained to palpate (feel) the body's "living anatomy" (i.e. flow of fluids, motion and texture of tissues, and structural makeup). They address health problems with a non-invasive system of medicine called, "Osteopathic Manual Medicine" in order to restore normal function in areas impaired by trauma, chronic illness, acute health problems, etc. This Site offers an explanation of traditional Osteopathic medicine in the treatment of a myriad of health problems, cases of typical medical problems resolved through treatment, the history of this medical specialty, and insights in research in Cranial Osteopathy.
Osteopathy is the knowledge of the structure, relation and function of each part of the human body applied to the adjustment or correction of whatever interferes with the harmonious operation of the same.
George V. Webster, D.O. 1921

Osteopathy's Sectarian Roots
William T. Jarvis, Ph.D.
By his own account, at 10 o'clock on June 22, 1874, the "truth" of osteopathy illuminated the mind of Andrew Taylor Still, the son of a missionary who used to assist his father in caring for ailing Shawnee indians. Still attended medical school but never obtained a degree. Still, who had become disillusioned with doctors and drugs following the loss of his children to cerebro-spinal meningitis, hypothesized that all diseases were due to misalignments of the bones (hence, osteo bone, pathy disease). He believed that such misalignments produced muscle spasms which impeded the circulation of the blood resulting in disease (termed the Rule of the Artery ). [For a review of Andrew Taylor Still's eccentricities see: Gardner. Fads and Fallacies In The Name of Science . Dover Publications, 1952.] Prescientific Practices DOs examined patients for 'luxated' bones throughout the body (not just the spine as do straight chiropractors). Examples in an early osteopathic textbook [1]: "Lesions of the lower two ribs are important causes of constipation, not only by spinal interference with the sympathetics ..., but by direct mechanical pressure upon the bowels themselves." (p.139)

Registered Osteopath and Cranial Osteopath Location: Home Osteopathic Information Home Fees ... Site Map Cranial Osteopathy W hat is Cranial Osteopathy? Cranial osteopathy has many similarities with the oldest known method of healing, the laying on of hands. The osteopath combines healing intention with a knowledge of anatomy, using the hands to "listen" for restrictions or strains in the body. Although the name implies head manipulation, the techniques are used to treat the whole body. Why Call it Cranial Partly for historical reasons. Dr Sutherland, who was the first teacher of cranial osteopathy, devised a system of correcting cranial bone restrictions using manipulation. He tested many of his early theories on his own head, keeping detailed records of the symptoms that came and went when he created, then removed, a variety of cranial bone restrictions. He experienced symptoms such as depression and severe head and jaw pain that were a direct cause of the restrictions he created. What About the Rest of the Body Although originally the focus was on the bones of the skull, it soon became obvious that other parts of the body were involved, in particular the sacrum. The sacrum is the bone that joins your spine to your pelvis. If the pelvis is twisted, tilted or unbalanced it will have an effect through the sacrum and its attachments all the way up the spine and into the base of the cranium.

Osteopathy is the body of medicine that originally used strictly manipulative techniques for correcting somatic abnormalities thought to cause disease and inhibit recovery. However, over the past century, osteopathy has embraced the full spectrum of medicine (to different degrees across the world), including the use of prescription drugs and surgery , in addition to manipulative techniques. Osteopathy or osteopathic medicine is thus both a philosophy and a set of manipulative techniques.

History
The osteopathic and chiropractic movements both started out in the United States Midwest in the and had similar philosophies; however, osteopathy came to adopt the use of medicine and surgery, whereas chiropractors continue to strictly use manipulative techniques. The original osteopathic movement is viewed today by scientists as pseudoscience or perhaps more correctly protoscience , since much osteopathic theory remains untested. Osteopathy was founded by Andrew Taylor Still , who was born in 1828 in Virginia. Although he is often referred to as a medical doctor, he never received a degree from a University. Still had been employed as an army doctor during the

Osteopathy is a medical body that includes physicians practicing in all fields of medicine.
All this means to me is that it has gained official recognition. It doesn't tell me what it is or how it's different from "standard" Western medicine (or similar to it). Also, how does it relate to chiropractic This article doesn't say anything, and as such, is properly a candidate for deletion. But I'd rather it get finished. Please, someone answer my questions above. Uncle Ed 21:45 Mar 25, 2003 (UTC) Osteopathy originally strictly used manipulative techniques for correcting somatic abnormalities thought to cause disease and inhibit recovery. However, over the past century, osteopathy has come to embrace the full spectrum of medicine. If that's not "saying something," then I don't know what it is. Would you prefer it to say, "now it utilizes a combination of manipulative techniques, drugs, and surgery?" The article also says where the movement came from, who founded it, and where its schools are. Now there are opinions as to whether the osteopathic approach is superior to the traditional M.D. approach or not, and I'm certainly of the belief that it is, but that's not NPOV, so it doesn't belong in there. An osteopath can do absolutely everything that an M.D. can, and very nearly everything that a chiropractor can (my understanding, as I was told by my late father, who was an osteopath, is that osteopathy inspired chiropractic). And I don't think "gained" recognition is a good use of words; my grandfather was practicing osteopathy before World War II and nobody ever questioned whether he was a doctor. He just delivered babies and prescribed medicine like anyone else. The difference between going to him or the M.D. across town was that if your back hurt, Dr. Ralph would probably put you on his table and pop your back rather than telling you to take aspirin.
