OVERVIEW
For nearly a century, Mayo's Orthopedic Research Division has been involved in advances to alleviate suffering from musculoskeletal disorders. Problems identified in the clinic are taken to the laboratory bench for study, and the results are then translated back into clinical practice. Currently, 24 funded investigators, many of them active clinicians, with nearly $7,000,000 in annual funding, are doing research in 10 basic research laboratories, and performing clinical trials and other clinical research in virtually every aspect of musculoskeletal pathology. Mayo orthopedic investigators hold dozens of patents, arising from research done in our laboratories, for new designs of joint replacements, fracture fixation implants, and even antibiotic delivery devices, that are being used today in our practice, and around the world. Our laboratories also provide opportunities for the education of new researchers. Today, Mayo's Orthopedic Research Division looks forward to even greater opportunities to improve the well-being of our patients, as advances in molecular medicine, genomics, and proteomics allow us to investigate revolutionary new treatments for arthritis, cancer, and injuries of all sorts.

Orthopedic Analysis - Automated Hip Implant Analysis The enCORE software platform facilitates accurate customized Orthopedic Analysis. Items such as hip prostheses, metal fastenings, and other artifacts are easily excluded from the analysis region for accurate bone density results. Customized regions-of-interest of any shape and size can be quickly defined for a wide range of utilization. Customized analysis with enCORE assures precise results and expands your clinical and research applications. GE Lunar's Orthopedic Analysis software is fast, precise, and easy to use. The image quality on the web depends on your computer configuration and settings. Malleable and macroporous, this implant is designed to act as a containment system for bone grafts or bone fragments, as well as a protective barrier for graft harvest sites. It is the first product of its kind to achieve FDA clearance for containing bone grafts in spinal fusion procedures in conjunction with conventional hardware.
"The validation of applications of bioresorbable technology in spine surgery is progressing rapidly. The lack of imaging artifact and gradual transfer of local stresses to the surrounding spinal units makes bioresorbable technology extremely attractive in spinal reconstructive procedures."

Commonly Missed Orthopedic Problems
MICHAEL T. BALLAS, M.D., JAMES TYTKO, M.D.,
and FRANK MANNARINO, M.D., Dayton, Ohio M usculoskeletal problems are frequently encountered by primary care physicians. Most of these problems get better with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medication, and the more severe injuries are usually visible on radiograph. Unfortunately, certain musculoskeletal injuries are difficult to recognize for a variety of reasons and, when not diagnosed early, may develop into chronic disabling conditions. We discuss seven musculoskeletal injuries that require early diagnosis to ensure a good outcome. Lachman's test is the most sensitive test for diagnosing a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear The anterior cruciate ligament is the most commonly injured ligament in the knee. A tear in this ligament usually occurs following a sudden valgus impact. Knees that are unstable as a result of anterior cruciate ligament tears put patients at risk for early degenerative joint disease, as well as subsequent damage to other structures of the knee. FIGURE 1. Lachman's test of the right knee. The examiner used the right hand to place anterior force on the lower leg while simultaneously using the left hand to place posterior force on the distal thigh. A good end point should be felt. Hands are reversed to test the left knee.

Seeking Advice For Ankle Surgery For Bone Bruise.
Posted: 08-09-05 8:08am I fell on my ankle a year ago.
I've had a mri taken and a talar dome bruise was diagnosed.
The thing abt this bone bruise is that although I am able to run about and even play soccer, there's pain every now and then, or even after the activities. Recently my orthopedic suggested I go for ankle surgery. I'm not really keen on surgery. Anyone has any idea if surgery will help a bone bruise or can something else do the job?
