When force is applied to a bone, it bends only a little and then breaks. This is called a fracture (a "fracture" is synonymous with a "break"). There are several types of fractures. In a non-displaced fracture , the bone cracks with the broken pieces still in alignment. The injury is not visible from the outside, but shows up as a line or crack on a x-ray. In a displaced fracture , the bone breaks in two or more pieces that have moved out of alignment. The distortion is visible from the outside and the break often causes severe pain. In an open fracture, commonly called a compound fracture, the ends of the bone are displaced, visibly piercing the skin. In these cases, there is a significant risk of infection.
Basically a fracture, which can involve any bone in the body, occurs when a strong force puts more stress on a bone than it can bear. Bones break differently depending on their structure and composition as well as the amount and type of force they are subjected to and the amount of energy they absorb prior to breaking.
Fingers can be fractured by direct injury, i.e. jamming, hitting or crushing them, or by being twisted suddenly. Two of the most common fractures of the wrist are fractures of the distal radius and the scaphoid, one of the small bones of the wrist, which are often caused by falling on the hand.

Bone Talk The gospel proverb- "Then shall the lame leap" applies aptly to the advent of Orthopedic surgery two centuries ago. Orthopedics: the care of bones and joints which enabled the little Forrest Gump to get up, to stand and to leap, has indeed improved the lives of many. Let's take a journey through the lens of history to examine the contribution this field has made to the well-being of human kind. by Linglei (Leslie) Xu Bones of the past...
The pioneer of orthopedics was Nicolas Andry. Andry, a prominent physician and professor of Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians at Paris, had a special interest in correcting deformities in children, advocating the use of splints while avoiding the use of surgery. He derived the word orthopedic from the Greek roots "orthos"(straight) and "pais"(a child). He was also the first one to apply this word to the art of correcting deformities. In his book, Orthopaedia: Or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children: By such Means, as may easily be put in Practice by Parents themselves, and all such as are Employed in Educating Children (1741), Andry suggested many postural exercises to correct deformities-in one case, an adolescent girl straightened her bent spine by carrying a weight in one arm.

The name of the new bone plugin Ive been testing is called Orthopedics by Irrational Number. Peter Jespersen is one of the programmers and has allowed me to post a litte info here and there. He gave me the go ahead to talk more about it. These are the functions in the first pack which they plan to release in about 2 weeks:
Joint Mover
Breaker
Fuser
Twister
Align Pitch
Delete
Connector
Clone/mirror
They are for LW 7.5 only From here it only gets better. Follow the link to: hrgiger 02-28-2003, 07:50 PM I read through those discussions on CGTalk and I'm definately curious. First of all Larry, I could barely make out the attachments. The images seemed a little lo-res and the print? Forget about it. It might of well have been in chinese. From what I saw, it seemed like the plug-in might work similar to messiah bones. Secondly, is this plug-in simply to help you rig or does it build auto-setups like ACS4 and TSM? I mean, is it totally different or what? I guess for the most part, I hate the rigging process as it is so time consuming (and a lof of that could just be the present modeler to layout setup we have now) and so I love ACS4 to get up and animating right away. I guess what I want to know is, since I already own ACS4, how will having this new plug-in benefit me? SplineGod 02-28-2003, 08:37 PM

Antibiotic impregnated acrylic bone cement is well accepted in orthopedics. Several brands containing the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin are marketed. To obtain information on the elution profile of the included antibiotic from the surgical cement, we studied the in vitro release of gentamicin from two marketed brands: Palacos® and Palamed®. Two experimental arrangements were used to investigated the release of gentamicin from the bone cement. The elution of gentamicin was tracked both in a non-flowing (non-dynamic time-elapsed elution) setting and by the use of a clearly defined USP XXIV flow-through cell apparatus (#4; pg1945), through which an elution medium was pumped at a constant speed.

In 2000, musculoskeletal conditions and injuries accounted for 146 million visits to physicians’ offices. Resident Leadership Forum Founded The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) recently announced that it, in conjunction with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and Zimmer Inc, has developed a Resident Leadership Forum program for year-four residents aimed at leadership development within orthopedics and beyond. Attendees were nominated by their departments and selected by the AOA Resident Leadership Forum Committee.

Bone Cancers Home Cancer Types Bone Cancers Primary bone tumours are tumours that start in the bone. In contrast, secondary bone cancer is where the cancer started in another part of the body but has then spread to the bones. The most common types of primary bone tumour are osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma, both of which are most frequently diagnosed in children and young adults. Other less common types of bone cancer include: Chondrosarcoma (a cancer arising in cartilage cells, usually found in adults between ages 50-75, though the less common mesenchymal-chondrosarcoma is more frequent in younger patients), Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of bone (MFH), Chondoma (a rare low grade malignancy occuring mostly between ages 30 -70), and other rare tumours.
