E-Mail a friend New Search Advanced Search Description The strength of this text, based on comments from the first edition, is that the reader, particularly the newcomer to orthopedic surgery, is able to find all of the basics of the subject in one text. This concept enables the reader to come to grips with subjects that have only been touched upon in undergraduate teachings. The intent behind compiling the book is to form a bridge, or more properly a "firm callus", between the literature available for undergraduate students and those intending to study bone in depth. Though many texts already exist for undergraduates and also for students of advanced orthopedic surgery, few cover the bridge intended in this edition. It is hoped that the second edition will continue to set the stage for graduates undergoing training in orthopedics, be they surgeons in the medical, dental or veterinary field. All of the authors have an established reputation in the fields that they have covered in the enclosed chapters. It is essential reading for the budding orthopedic surgeon.

Susan M. Stover
Description of the Problem:
Catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries are a serious concern for the horseracing industry. These injuries typically require surgery and can be so severe that they necessitate immediate humane destruction. The cannon bone is one of the most commonly fractured bones in racehorses. Previous UC Davis studies have identified several risk factors associated with the development of cannon bone condylar fractures. In particular, researchers determined that suspensory ligament injuries and the use of toe grabs both appear to be linked to the occurrence of these fractures. Although a cause and effect relationship has not been documented, these risk factors may elevate bone strain at the fracture site.
Study Objectives:
  • Investigate the possible mechanical connection between suspensory ligament injuries, the use of toe grabs, and the development of condylar fractures.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Orthopedic "hardware" (e.g., metal implants) continues to move toward product maturity. Design cycles may be lengthening and new product introductions provide less innovation, resulting in a slowing in the evolution process. However, as seen during the February meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Rosemont, Illinois) in San Francisco, California, the orthopedic industry is not stagnating just undergoing a redirection. Research and development emphasis is shifting to techniques and products that postpone major surgery, and to new materials to complement existing treatments, with the goal of enhancing the success of patient care. Several areas are receiving significant attention by orthopedics and biotech firms, including resorbables, bone and tissue substitutes, and recombinant growth factors.

    Avian Orthopedics
As avian veterinarians, we are often called upon to treat avian orthopedic problems. Some occur as the result of trauma (ceiling fan injuries, flying into a window or mirror, or getting stepped on), others occur from nutritional imbalances, and others may occur as a result of genetic or developmental problems. Fortunately, our training in mammalian orthopedics will give us a good base for approaching correction of orthopedic problems, as the main principles are the same. Most of the orthopedic techniques developed for mammals can be applied to birds, taking into account the anatomical differences in avian species, and whether or not the bird can have flight restored. Anatomy and Physiology The bones of flighted birds are unique in that they have evolved some pneumatic bones that are hollow and contribute to the bird being light enough to fly. The bones of the pelvic girdle, some ribs, the humerus and the femur all are pneumatic, and contain large air-filled medullary canals that are involved with the respiratory cycle during flight. The bones of birds are relatively brittle and have thin cortices. They also contain more calcium than mammalian bone, which tends to make them more brittle and prone to developing multiple fractures at one site. The distal portion of the leg, below the tibiotarsus, has very little soft tissue covering bone, and the proximal half of the humerus also has little soft tissue covering bone, so fractures in these areas are often open and comminuted. When a pneumatic bone is fractured, often subcutaneous emphysema occurs, but it usually resolves within a day, without treatment.
