Orthopedics
Orthopedics - also spelled orthopaedics - involves the treatment and prevention of injuries to the musculoskeletal system, which includes:
  • bones , the hard living tissues that make up the body's skeleton
  • joints , where the ends of two or more bones meet
  • muscles , which produce motion by contractions
  • ligaments , which connect the bones and keep joints stable
  • tendons , which connect muscle to bone or other tissue
  • nerves , bundles of fibers which transmit nervous impulses (Read about the nervous system in " Brain/Mental Health/Nervous System ")
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, over 28 million Americans develop some kind of musculoskeletal problem every year, and three million people require hospitalization for their problems every year. Problems can range from back, shoulder and neck pain to hip and knee replacements. Below are links to some common orthopedic problems and articles on injury prevention. Following these links can lead you to more information on your particular problem. You can also move your mouse over the picture of the skeleton on this page for links to orthopedic-related topics.

Mi-tec Medical Publishing Home SEARCH Staff About Us ... Contact Us RACS Bookshop Orthopaedic Bone in Clinical Orthopedics: Form to Function The strength of this text, based on comments from the first edition, is that the reader, particularly the newcomer to orthopedic surgery, is able to find all of the basics of the subject in one text. This concept enables the reader to come to grips with subjects that have only been touched upon in undergraduate teachings.
The intent behind compiling the book is to form a bridge, or more properly a "firm callus", between the literature available for undergraduate students and those intending to study bone in depth. Though many texts already exist for undergraduates and also for students of advanced orthopedic surgery, few cover the bridge intended in this edition.
It is hoped that the second edition will continue to set the stage for graduates undergoing training in orthopedics, be they surgeons in the medical, dental or veterinary field. All of the authors have an established reputation in the fields that they have covered in the enclosed chapters. It is essential reading for the budding orthopedic surgeon.
