Encyclopedia Coptica is Courtesy of The word Copt is derived from the Greek word Aigyptos, which was, in turn, derived from "Hikaptah", one of the names for Memphis, the first capital of Ancient Egypt. The modern use of the term "Coptic" describes Egyptian Christians, as well as the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language script. Also, it describes the distinctive art and architecture that developed as an early expression of the new faith. The Coptic Church is based on the teachings of Saint Mark who brought Christianity to Egypt during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero in the first century, a dozen of years after the Lord's ascension. He was one of the four evangelists and the one who wrote the oldest canonical gospel . Christianity spread throughout Egypt within half a century of Saint Mark's arrival in Alexandria as is clear from the New Testament writings found in Bahnasa, in Middle Egypt, which date around the year 200 A.D., and a fragment of the Gospel of Saint John, written using the Coptic language , which was found in Upper Egypt and can be dated to the first half of the second century. The Coptic Church, which is now more than nineteen centuries old, was the subject of many

43. Great Schism
Several articles from a Protestant perspective on the Great Schism that divided the Catholic and orthodox Churches.
http://mb-soft.com/believe/txc/gschism.htm
Great Schism
General Information The term Great Schism is used to refer to two major events in the history of Christianity: the division between the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Roman) churches, and the period (1378 - 1417) during which the Western church had first two, and later three, lines of popes.
Eastern Schism
The schism between the Eastern and Western churches is traditionally dated to 1054, although the precise point at which the split became a fixed and lasting reality is difficult to determine. Many causes contributed to the growing misunderstanding and alienation between the two groups. Partly these were differences of philosophical understanding, liturgical usage, language, and custom, but political rivalries and divisions were also involved. Occasions of friction, hostility, and open division on doctrinal questions as well as matters of discipline and daily practice had occurred long before 1054 - for example, the Photian schism of the 9th century. Fooz passed this link over to me the other day, which I thought my friend in NY who's a big RPG-head (still, at 35) would enjoy. A brief exchange followed from my e-mail, during which he told me that he'd become more politically active since I last saw him, and that he was headed down to DC for the rally this weekend.
I responded, "Kol hakavod... You guys should storm the White House and drag Bush out by the scruff of his neck."
He replied, "Not a bad idea, although we are supposed to be 'non-violent.' P.S.: This message is for any FBI hacker looking at my e-mail. Hi! I hope you are really sad at this waste of taxpayer money!"
To which I replied in turn, "I really wouldn't worry about it... Apparently they're so incompetent, they can't do anything to help prevent the deaths of 10,000 people when they're warned

OCMC is the official international missions and evangelism agency of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the Americas (SCOBA).
The Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) proclaims and practices the evangelical imperative of the Orthodox faith based on the Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who commissioned us to go "and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). OCMC recruits, trains and sends missionaries to preach, teach, baptize and to minister to the poor, hungry, sick, suffering and orphaned. We, therefore, support the development of indigenous leaders and strengthen the infrastructures of churches, especially in, though not limited to, countries where Christianity is a minority, thus creating vibrant, eucharistic Orthodox Christian communities throughout the world.
