Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of radiation-induced sequelae in children. The University of Pennsylvania experience. BACKGROUND.
The role of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in the treatment of radiation-related sequelae in adults is well known. In contrast, its role in the management of radiation-related sequelae in children has not been well studied. In an effort to define its value better, the authors reviewed the University of Pennsylvania experience and hereby report the results of their analysis. METHODS.
Between 1989 and 1994, ten patients who underwent radiation therapy for cancer as children were referred for HBO therapy. Six patients underwent HBO therapy as a prophylactic measure prior to maxillofacial procedures; dental extractions and/or root canals (four patients), bilateral coronoidectomies for mandibular ankylosis (one patient), and wound dehiscence (one patient). Therapeutic HBO was administered to four other patients; one patient for vasculitis resulting in acute seventh cranial nerve palsy and the other three after sequestrectomy for osteoradionecrosis (mastoid bone, temporal bone, and sacrum, respectively).

The appliance or bands you are wearing are not indestructible. We ask that you avoid chewy, sticky, or hard foods-Please use common sense. The list of "foods to avoid" include:
  • Sticky, chewy candies (i.e. caramels, licorice, gum, taffy,) Hard breads (i.e. hard rolls and toast, pizza crust), hard candy, and ice Chip snacks including Fritos, Doritos, hard pretzels
Decay/Decalcification
Your teeth may decay underneath orthodontic bands if the bands are loose. At each appointment we make certain that your bands are tight. However, if you notice a loose band or bracket, call us as soon as possible so that we can set up a repair appointment. A more frequent problem, but one that you can easily prevent, is decalcification or staining of the teeth. This may occur on areas of a tooth adjacent to the band if you do not brush your teeth thoroughly after each meal. Braces DO NOT cause decay/calcification - not maintaining good oral hygiene does. Preventing this problem is simple - it's up to you.

EPILOGUE As this study has demonstrated, Literacy-Based Support Circles, Cognitive Compensatory Tools, and Cognitive Enhancement Tools can help adults with FAS/FAE live more productive and fulfilled lives. As well, these tools enable the families and support workers to function more effectively. The interventions did not effect major changes in the overall life situations of the subjects but they did help, and this is an important finding. This research project has also shown that those suffering from FAS/FAE are seemingly invisible to the educational institutions and social service agencies which should be helping them and their families. Indeed, this was such an overwhelming problem in the research that we began our conclusions by summarizing the inequities that FAS/FAE victims and their families face. FAS/FAE is a difficult disorder both to identify and to support. It is highly complex and the behaviours are often very deceiving. Consequently, parents and professionals require a high level of FAS/FAE knowledge as well as skills related to understanding and managing challenging behaviours. Unfortunately, parents seem to be the only people acquiring this expertise and often carry the burden of care with little help or understanding from the outside world. If these children meet with success, the parents are usually responsible for engineering this outcome. For all such parents, the FAS/FAE disorder is a major factor defining their lives. Some have been driven to the brink of financial, emotional, and physical ruin. And yet, rather than helping these families, front line agencies have often ignored them or insulted them by suggesting that they were trying to claim resources which they did not deserve.

Health and Fitness Tips and Tricks 25 Good Things To Put In Your Mouth For weight control, and general good health, variety is key - remember lots of food that's good for you also tastes great. 1. Yogurt. Make it the low-fat or non-fat variety. Packs protein, calcium, niacin, riboflavin, potassium, and vitamin B- 12. What's it good for? All these nutrients help your body produce healthy blood cells, and the calcium builds strong bones and prevents osteoporosis. 2. Vegetable juices. Tons of flavour, loads of vitamins, and virtually calorie free. Juice your own veggies like carrots, peppers and greens to avoid the salt that's in many canned juices. 3. Small bites. Little nibbles make the most of every mouthful, and more importantly, lengthen your meal time. That's exactly what you need to keep from overeating, since there's about a 15 minute lag between your stomach filling up and your brain sending out the message, "I'm full." 4. Crack an egg. After a few years of an unfounded nationwide cholesterol scare, eggs are back, and are still great sources of protein, vitamins and minerals. Plus, they're easy to make, and tasty too. Best way to eat eggs: Ditch the yolk (where most of the cholesterol lurks) and opt for whites only (almost all the protein). 5. Eat your beans. High in protein, low in fat, and packed with fiber (about 9 grams per cup), beans are great salad or soup toppers. Good ones to try are lentils, chick peas and black beans.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS A CROWN? A crown, also called a cap, completely covers a tooth to restore the tooth to its normal shape and size. A crown is necessary for a tooth that has been severely fractured (cracked), damaged or decayed. It provides strength and durability to a tooth and is especially important for teeth that are subject to great wear and abrasion, such as your back teeth. "Crowns take several office visits to prepare so, have patience!" HOW IS A CROWN MADE? First, the tooth is prepared by reducing its size so that the crown can fit over it properly. Next, an impression of the prepared tooth is made to provide an exact mold for the crown. Your dentist will choose a tooth color that closely matches your own tooth shade. The impression will then be sent to a dental lab that will make your crown. While waiting for your permanent crown, a temporary cap will be placed over the prepared tooth. Finally, your dentist will cement your permanent crown into place.
WHAT TYPES OF MATERIALS ARE USED TO MAKE CROWNS?

Dental Advice faq from Seattle Area Dentist
Advice Index Main Page Dr. Janson's Home Page Please consult your dentist prior to following any advice on these pages. I am looking to have some cosmetic dentistry done. As a teenager I wore braces but I felt powerless in the process. The things that bother me most about my teeth (for instance, the two top front teeth come down much lower than the two beside them) have never been fixed. My question is this: If my teeth are straight but I dislike the variance in relative tooth sizes, would the fix be made through dental or orthodontal measures Assuming your teeth are already positioned properly, the shape of your teeth would likely be adjusted via recontouring and cosmetic veneers or crowns. This procedure may necessitate only adjusting 2 of the front 4 teeth, but often achieves optimal results by treating all 4 involved teeth. I would be quite happy to see you and discuss your options with you when you come to Seattle. Our office works with an excellent dental lab right here in the building which provides excellent cosmetic work. Often, my lab technician will come visit our office while our patient is here to get an ideal view of how to design properly shaped and colored anterior veneers or crowns. Also, if the relatived sizes/shape of your teeth is not too extensive, it may be possible to simply reshape them with a bit or recontouring, eliminating the need for either orthodontia or veneers. I hope this helps!

Gallery Monsters
Could This Be Someone You Know?
In any population, there are always a few "monsters" and gallery visitors are no exception. Now, I won't talk about the obvious because sane parents don't drag toddlers into a venue so boring (to them) as an art gallery. Sensible mothers quickly wheel a crying baby off to be fed or changed. And only once have I seen someone contemplate bringing her large and boisterous dog into the gallery. To my relief, she thought better of it and left him outside.
Instead, I'll tell you some true stories from my experience as a gallery owner, and let you draw your own conclusions.
The first incident happened just on closing time one evening. As I cleared my desk, a chap walked in and began inspecting all the paintings, making noises of approval over each of them. Until he came to a newly completed piece called "The Indian Hawker."
This painting grew out of a mention my father had made about the itinerant traders who had travelled the Outback until the 1930s, with their wares in a horse-drawn cart. I was startled when the visitor turned to me with a look of disgust and loudly remarked, "This is really offensive. I wouldn't have this in my house."

I recently read Walt's People , a book collecting interviews with some of the artists that worked closely with Disney. Are there any other books that cover Walt as he built his empire (especially through the 1950's and 60's)? posted by TetrisKid to at 10:47 AM PST ( Disney Animation Cartoon

The Art of Disney
is very extensive, going back to the earliest days. My family had the original edition published in the early '70s (which I loved just poring over as a kid), but the current edition has been updated to cover the past 30+ years. The overview on Amazon says that the new edition still retains much of the info and artwork about the earlier years, especially the work surrounding Snow White and Pinnochio (which I'd say were the real pinncale of Disney's golden years, at least in terms of the sheer beauty of drawing and animation).
