Allison calls these "snapshots". There are entire stories around each quote, but I'll only give the quote. Some involve Allison and I, others are just things we overheard, or snippets of conversations we had with people we met along the way.
"Frosty the Snowman is goin' down
Allison shrieked out into a crowded pub: "Oh my God! He has no teeth!" And then later, trying to explain further just HOW this person had no teeth: "One entire side of his front row of teeth was gone ... It looked like an orthodontal side part." An orthodontal side part ? Genius.
"I love getting drunk and swimming in hotel pools. Because ... well ... you can't really drown."
" 'The snow is general all over Ireland!' "
"Oh Jaysus, now she's quotin' Joyce!"
Guy: "I put my cell phone on the windowsill in the bathroom while I took a shower, and now ... for some reason ... it won't work anymore!"

Things and Stuff
Sorry Dadahead, that terrorism round-up is going to have to wait a couple of days. It has turned into quite the post and I'm going to need more time to finish it up. Just thought I would point out a couple of newsworthy items:
First, the Air Force is facing further leadership issues. The Pentagon is taking over nearly two dozen procurement progams due to a lack of civilian Air Force leadership. Air Force Voices has the details . My take on the situation? This isn't a good sign. Granted, the Pentagon says its "not punishing" the Air Force and that the transfer of management is only "temporary," but it is never good to see your Service's programs go under the overall bureaucracy's management. Also, it does not bode well for the Air Force in general if it is unable to maintain adequate numbers of civilian personnel to fill high-level positions.
Second, Paul Smith is going to be posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on Monday.

    Invisalign
June 2004 Has anyone ever tried Invisalign, a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without braces? They cost about the same as braces ($2000-$5000) and are fitted by a dentist. Apparently, you need to take them off when eating, drinking or brushing, which seems like a hassle. And you need to get regular 6-week dental check-ups to ensure that they are working properly. But the advantage is they are virtually invisible. I don't know anyone who has used these and wanted to know: are they worth it? Considering Invisalign hi, i'm currently about half way finished w/my invisalign treatment and have been very happy with it. most people can't tell i'm wearing them and i see a real difference in my teeth. i get new aligners every two weeks, and go to the orthodontist every 4 weeks to get my next two sets and get checked. while it's a little annoying to have to take them off and on, it's great to be able to eat normally and clean my teeth thoroughly. i've gotten a little sloppy about never eating in them and i've always left them in to drink (including coffee). the thing is, because you get new ones every two weeks, they never get that gross. it's really important to wear them as much as you can, like 20-22 hours a day, so i try to get them back in as soon as i can after eating.

    Company Profile
The company Dental-Kunstleder-und Lederservice was founded to repair the upholstery of dental treatment chairs. The company was able to establish this service with dentists with initially only five employees. As a result of contact with an increasing number of customers, the management of the company decided to include X-ray aprons in the range of products. Thus the production of new aprons, as well as the repair of existing aprons, started.
In order to meet customer requirements, the technology of the individual production stages is being improved continuously. Besides using conventional methods, seamless upholstery is produced by means of a deep-drawing process with state-of-the-art equipment. In the product area InForm, tools and molds for new upholstery parts for various chair manufacturers are produced.
A further large step into the future is being made: our quality management is certified according to EN ISO 9001 (now EN ISO 13485:2000). Our medical products are type-examination tested and CE-marked.

"Healthcare must be in the hands of an organization which has an encompassing commitment to the health and welfare of its members" - this has been Maccabi's guiding motto throughout its history.
On the basis of this principle, Maccabi was the first healthcare provider to offer its members supplementary health care services, beyond existing medical services.
The National Health Insurance Law which recently came into effect, defined a "national list (basket) of medical services" which was less inclusive than the range of services provided to Maccabi members prior to its enactment. To retain the excellent scope of services which Maccabi offered its members in the past, Maccabi established additional healthcare plans - Silver Shield and Gold Shield - at a reasonable cost to all members, with membership unrestricted by any medical condition. These supplementary healthcare services contribute to the health and quality of life of our members and therefore, membership in these plans provides peace of mind and a sense of security.
The following is a short summary of the entitlement of Silver Shield and Gold Shield plan members:

Dental advice for children : Thumb sucking
THE HABIT... Thumb sucking is one of the most common habits during childhood. Most children suck their thumb for safety even before birth.
    WHEN IT BECOMES
    A PROBLEM ?
Although thumb sucking is a normal habit it can cause serious teeth problems if it continues after teeth eruption. The problem gets serious if it continues after the age of four, when the permanent teeth are about to appear. In some cases thumb sucking is substituted by another dangerous habit as placing pencils between the teeth or biting the lips. THE DANGER If the child doesn't stop thumb sucking in time, it is possible some teeth to get misplaced and require orthodontal treatment.
HOW TO STOP Usually children stop the habit on their own.
    If they don't :
Keep the child's hands occupied (e.g. with a toy)
Ask the advice of a pediatric dentist.
Give the example of his friends that have stopped thumb sucking.
Don't put the child in a state of anxiety or fear.
Avoid punishing the child. That might have the opposite result. home our mouth dental problems oral hygiene ... dental links created by Abyss Design Last Update: 13/08/2003 Your comments are welcomed.

little on his face. The texture of his skin on his back and arms was also
very rough. He just completed a six month regimen of accutane. The dermatologist said he almost never starts out with accutane...a very strong drug. However, when he initially saw Tim he thought it was the way to go. Tim's skin really looks great now. It also feels softer, less sand-papery. I think the timing was good on the accutane because you really can't go out in the sun and he's done just as summer begins. I remember when he came home after his mid-face and his skin looked so great...for a short time. I mentioned it to my pediatrician and he smiled

WHAT ARE THE DENTAL DEVICES USED TO TREAT SLEEP APNEA?
Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) and Other Dental Products for Sleep Apnea
Several different dental appliances or treatments are available and are proving to be very valuable treatments for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Dentists and orthodontists are slowly becoming more aware of obstructive sleep apnea and may become more involved with its diagnosis and treatment. Among the devices available are the following examples:
    • The mandibular advancement device (MAD) is the most widely used dental device for sleep apnea. It is similar in appearance to a sports mouth guard. MAD forces the lower jaw forward and down slightly, which keeps the airway open.
Splints (e.g., Sleep Splint) are sometimes used that hold the tongue in a specific position to keep the airway as open as possible.
The functional magnetic system uses it two magnets positioned on opposite sides of the jaw to keep the airway open.
Patients fitted with one of these devices should have a check-up early on to see if it is working; short-term success usually predicts long-term benefits. It may need to be adjusted or replaced periodically.
