The content of this site includes the following titles: The Auk (1884-1999), The Condor (1899-2000), The Journal of Field Ornithology (1930-1999), The Wilson Bulletin (1889-1999), Pacific Coast Avifauna (1900-1974) and Studies in Avian Biology (1978-1999). Books Discussion Ornithology is the study of birds, encompassing their evolution and biology development, physiology, ecology, behaviour, migration, species distribution and more. A bird is a warm-blooded vertebrate animal. It is characterized by feathers, wings, bill with toothless jaws, two legs, internal fertilization and shelled eggs that are incubated outside the body. Birds evolved from flying ancestors that evolved from reptiles, and modern-looking forms existed about 100 million years ago. Even flightless modern birds (e.g. penguins, ostriches) evolved from ancestors that flew. Birds comprise the class Aves. The class is composed of groups called orders. Birds of an order share characteristics such as the shape and arrangement of the bones of the head, the shape of the breastbone or keel, the number or arrangement of toes, number of tail feathers, etc. For example, the order passeriformes (passerines) is comprised of singing or perching birds.

To understand these incredibly diverse birds and monitor their populations, VWS created the Big Sur Ornithology Lab. Through daily censusing, researchers are able to collect information on the health and distribution of bird populations. Our research is part of a global effort helping recognize the need for habitat conservation throughout the world. The ornithology lab bands landbirds to identify migration routes, breeding and wintering areas, and mortality factors of common western birds. Band encounters as depicted on the map of band encounter locations indicate that some birds may breed as far north as Alaska and winter as far south as southern Mexico.

Rubber boots are on the verge of becoming obsolete as the year draws to a close. Winter flocks permeate the yellowing sycamores, and chattering Ruby-crowned Kinglets lighten the spirits. One cannot help but smile as the hills become greener and greener as they are fueled by the winter rains and we all look forward to January 1st when we can wish all birds everywhere a Happy Birthday.
Mist-Netting/Banding at Andrew Molera State Park
In December at Andrew Molera State Park we captured a total of 181 individuals of 24 species, the lowest numbers for the year since last March. Captures will likely remain low throughout the winter months until spring migration begins in April. This month, the most commonly captured species were Ruby-crowned Kinglet (33 individuals), Yellow-rumped Warbler (31 individuals), Hermit Thrush (18 individuals), and Bushtit (18 individuals). December 12th was the busiest day this winter, with a total of 33 birds captured. This busy December day was much lower than November's big day which included 58 captured birds. Some exciting December captures included a

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. This thoroughly researched book provides a fine record of the developmental history of American ornithology from about 1870 until the late 1930s. Chapter 1, entitled the "Culture of Collecting," describes the cultural context of collecting at the time. In his best-selling collecting manual of 1874, Elliott Coues advises collectors on the optimum number of specimens to collect: "All you can get ....Bird skins are capital." Other important publications offered specimens for sale. Any species could be bought, even those that were the most rare. Continue article Advertisement
Chapter 4 covers the growth of systematic ornithology, especially the describing of new taxa and the controversies over the use of trinomials, which were already in use in Europe unbeknownst to American practitioners of the trade. One of the most heated issues within the AOU early in its history was the exclusive use of formal names, including trinomials, in The Auk, of which many Associates had little knowledge. Amateurs also complained that the formal names changed constantly and argued that what the movement really needed was a set of generally agreed-upon English names for North American birds.
