Studies of birds and collection of avian specimens began with the inception of the California Academy of Sciences on April 4, 1853. Preeminent ornithologist James G. Cooper was appointed as Curator of Zoology in 1862, Henry Chapman and Ferdinand Gruber were appointed as the first Curators of Ornithology and Mammalogy in 1891. From its early years until 1906, the Academy amassed an amazing collection of some 25,000 birds, and thousands of mammals, which were housed in the Academy's facilities on Market Street. The earthquake and ensuing fire of April 18, 1906 destroyed the Academy's museum and nearly all of the bird and mammal specimens. Of the thousands of specimens contained in the department, only two, the type specimens of the Guadalupe Storm Petrel (Oceanodroma macrodactyla)

Welcome to my Book, and other information resource, Review Page The Books Sorted by Publishers. The Books Sorted By Subject.
Books have always been one of my great loves so it is a real pleasure for me to be able to review some of the currently available works on arthropods and their ecology. Some of these books are of broad general interest others are more specialised. I have graded the books into 3 general catagories, (i) Student, this means the book is particularly aimed at higher secondary and university undergratuate students, which means the book is fully referenced and will assume some knowledge of biology on the part of the reader, many of these books are well written and will be enjoyable for non-students to read (ii) General, this means anybody who has an interest in the subject should enjoy this, and (iii) Junior, this means the book is specifically aimed at younger readers. Some of the books are primarily taxonomic works but with a good helping of ecology, you will find these in both catagories.
Finally I have to thank all the publishers who have so kindly sent me the books thus enabling me to supply you with these reviews.

The Wisconsin Society for Ornithology was organized in 1939 to encourage the study of Wisconsin birds. The aims have since expanded to emphasize all of the many enjoyable aspects of birding and to support the research and habitat protection necessary to preserve Wisconsin birdlife. WSO strives to alert members and the public to situations and practices that threaten Wisconsin's bird populations. Members in the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology include those who enjoy birds attracted to their homes by feeders and bird houses, those who pursue field study or bird banding as a hobby, and those who engage in ornithology professionally. Membership exceeds 1500 from across the United States and around the world.
