Development and application of wetland monitoring tools
A number of useful tools (handbooks, maps, theses and relevant reports) for assessing and monitoring aquatic biodiversity were acquired, thereby improving the existing reference collection of documents on Kenya’s aquatic resources. The key reference material are Directory of African Wetlands, Ramsar Handbooks for wise use of wetland, Guidelines of Lake Management, Wetlands of Kenya, Tropical freshwater wetlands, Ibis, Auk, Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management, Biotropica, Marine science and other periodicals Assessment of water quality using micro flora in Nairobi River system Intensive agricultural activities were the main form of land use around Ondiri swamp, where River Nairobi originates (photo by George Ndiritu 2000). There are many resources which will help teachers and students to find projects and interact with other classrooms across the country and around the world. Tellecollaborative learning is often used for this type of interaction where students work together online toward a common goal.

Global SchoolNet
The Global SchoolNet Foundation organizes, manages, and facilitates projects for schools. Their HILITES archives and mailing list keeps educators up-to-date on project ideas. The project registry allows schools to register upcoming events in which others might want to participate. Projects range from videoconferencing to e-mail only. If you want to participate with CUSeeMe schools, there is a whole section devoted to those who have the CUSeeMe software. Global SchoolHouse The Global SchoolNet is part of the Global SchoolNet Organization. It is designed to build an online community. I*EARN (International Education and Resource Network) This nonprofit organization creates structured projects that facilitate engaged learning and youth making a difference on an International scale. Project areas include interdisciplinary topics such as the environment/science, art/literature, and social studies/politics. Some examples of past projects are the Holocaust/Genocide, the Building Wells for Clean Water in Nicaragua, and the Planetary Notions, an environmental newsletter.

Project Description and Objectives Birds in the Schoolyard will develop in four stages of science education. The awareness and appreciation stage provided students with activities to spark their interest. Such activities included bird walks where students learned the use of binoculars and birding skills, a campus bird inventory developed by the students with help of local Audubon volunteers, and the designing, installing, and monitoring of bird feeding stations. As their assessment tool, students kept nature journals with their observations and reflections about the birding activities The knowledge stage included activities that helped students study bird identification, habitats, feeding habits, and neotropical migration connections. The Naturalist Center at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology served as outstanding teacher resources. Duke University, North American Bluebird Society, Wake Audubon Society and Purple Martin Conservation Association were valuable sources of information and assistance. Evaluation and assessment tools, such as class quizzes, oral reports and essays, were developed to measure increased student knowledge. The Center for Inquiry-Based Learning at Duke University assisted in developing inquiry-based labs. Students were evaluated on their participation and production in collaborative learning activities.

Rubber boots are on the verge of becoming obsolete as the year draws to a close. Winter flocks permeate the yellowing sycamores, and chattering Ruby-crowned Kinglets lighten the spirits. One cannot help but smile as the hills become greener and greener as they are fueled by the winter rains and we all look forward to January 1st when we can wish all birds everywhere a Happy Birthday.
Mist-Netting/Banding at Andrew Molera State Park
In December at Andrew Molera State Park we captured a total of 181 individuals of 24 species, the lowest numbers for the year since last March. Captures will likely remain low throughout the winter months until spring migration begins in April. This month, the most commonly captured species were Ruby-crowned Kinglet (33 individuals), Yellow-rumped Warbler (31 individuals), Hermit Thrush (18 individuals), and Bushtit (18 individuals). December 12th was the busiest day this winter, with a total of 33 birds captured. This busy December day was much lower than November's big day which included 58 captured birds. Some exciting December captures included a
