102. CSOM: Treating Spasmodic Dysphonia With Acupuncture
Overview of an alternative therapy for adductor SD. Prepared by Calm Spirit oriental medicine.
http://members.aol.com/calmshen/spasdys2.htm
Using Acupuncture to Treat Spasmodic Dysphonia
For background information on spasmodic dysphonia (SD), including diagnosis and conventional treatments, please see my related article, An Introduction to Spasmodic Dysphonia As was pointed out in that article, all conventional treatments for SD are either safe but short-term reductions of symptoms or carry the potential of serious, permanent side effects. There is no cure currently known. So, the search for new treatments continues into the realm of the unconventional. A recent issue of the Journal of Voice (1997:11(2);232) describes one alternative approach. In this study the authors compared the treatment of adductor-type SD using Botulinum toxin A (Botox) injection to acupuncture.
Research Design
Two men, 31 and 24 years old, with identical sociocultural backgrounds were studied. Each used his voice extensively in his profession. One was a police officer, the other a mechanic. Their SD manifested as a strain-strangled voice and by tension expressed while speaking but not during laughing and singing. Neither tremor nor other neurological symptoms were found. Past medical history did not reveal a psychological problem. SD had started two years before the first medical exam. Both patients had speech therapy for more than eight months without significant improvement. They had no structural or mucosal abnormalities of the vocal folds. The investigators made acoustic recordings of both patients using the same equipment: one month before and three months after for the Botox patient; two months before and six months after for the acupuncture patient. The frequency parameters recorded were the average fundamental frequency, the standard deviation of the fundamental frequency, the jitter (cycle-to-cycle variation in frequency), the shimmer (cycle-to-cyle variation in amplitude), and the noise-to-harmonic ratio. Wide-band spectrographic analysis was also performed before and after each therapy.

Find Acupuncture Schools in the United States and Canada. Laws for Acupuncture Schools differ from state to state, therefore, each acupuncture school entails its own philosophy and instruction outline. Acupuncture school education and training is approximately 3,000 credit hours. Because there are varying therories of Acupuncture, some schools teach the 5-Element style of acupuncture as opposed to the more familiar TCM style. While some acupuncture schools have mandatory herbal curriculum, other acupuncture schools list this course-study as an option.
The main purpose of attending an acupuncture school is to be educated and trained to be healers in the art, to learn the science and philosophy of acupuncture, and to be instructed in herbal and Oriental medicine. Attaining a professional license as an acupuncturist is rewarding in many ways. One not only learns to heal others but also learns to heal himself - spiritually, mentally and physically.
Fundamentally, all aspects of traditional Oriental medicine are introduced in the first year of academic instruction. This includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, anatomy, body therapy, biosciences and Tai Chi. This prepares the aspiring acupuncturist for clinical apprenticehsip. During the second year at an acupuncture school, classroom experience teaches in-depth philosophy of acupuncture practice, Oriental medicine and advance needling techniques.

Oriental medicine, which originated in ancient China, has spread over Korea and Japan. Since Korea is closely located to China, the medical history of Korea has been influenced by China. But instead of simply imitating, we developed our original medicine steadily. From the period of Baegje and Silla to the Koryeo and Chosun dynasty, the numerous books on Oriental Medicine distinctly prove the independence and originality of Korean medicine. Moreover, Dongeuibogam, which was published by Heo Jun, the great doctor of Korea, being the representative book on synthetical medicine, shows the uniqueness of Korean medicine. In the late Chosun dynasty, Lee Jema systemized and explained the structure and function of human body by the method of Four constitutional type classifying. He established a distinctive medicine of physical constitution by classifying every person to be in one of four constitutions.

The professional master's degree program in traditional Chinese medicine at OCOM comprehensively prepares students for a career in one of the most rapidly growing and rewarding occupations in health care today. Leading to the degree of Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (M.Ac.O.M.), the program is designed to train effective, highly competent health care providers, skilled in the application of a classical medicine in a modern world. From this perspective, healing work may be seen as a truly creative endeavor - one that transforms both the practitioner and the patient. OCOM is committed to this tradition of individual growth and has integrated into its educational experiences ongoing training in classical Chinese internal-development arts including

Acupuncture, Qigong, and "Chinese Medicine"
Stephen Barrett, M.D. "Chinese medicine," often called "Oriental medicine" or "traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)," encompasses a vast array of folk medical practices based on mysticism. It holds that the body's vital energy ( chi or qi ) circulates through channels, called meridians , that have branches connected to bodily organs and functions. Illness is attributed to imbalance or interruption of chi. . Ancient practices such as acupuncture, Qigong, and the use of various herbs are claimed to restore balance. Qigong is also claimed to influence the flow of "vital energy." Internal Qigong involves deep breathing, concentration, and relaxation techniques used by individuals for themselves. External Qigong is performed by "Qigong masters" who claim to cure a wide variety of diseases with energy released from their fingertips. However, scientific investigators of Qigong masters in China have found no evidence of paranormal powers and some evidence of deception. They found, for example, that a patient lying on a table about eight feet from a Qigong master moved rhythmically or thrashed about as the master moved his hands. But when she was placed so that she could no longer see him, her movements were unrelated to his [2]. Falun gong , which China recently banned,
