The introduction to Griffin's upcoming book entitled The Battle for Las Vegas — The Law vs. the Mob . The book chronicles the wide-ranging, criminal exploits of Chicago Outfit enforcer Tony Spilotro, the mobster portrayed by Joe Pesci in the movie Casino , and law enforcement's belabored efforts to oust the Mafia from Vegas. It is told in large part by the former FBI agents and detectives who fought the war against Spilotro and his Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. The book is scheduled for publication by Huntington Press in early 2006. The Labs That Made It Snow by Ron Chepesiuk This is the prologue to the upcoming book The Bullet or the Bribe: Taking Down Colombia's Cali Drug Cartel by Ron Chepesiuk, the story of the rise of the powerful Cali Cartel and the long and often frustrating campaign that U.S. and international law enforcement waged to take it down. The book details the cartel’s rise to international prominence and the lifestyles of its godfathers, its efforts to buy Colombia, its death struggle with legendary Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, its brilliant strategy to portray itself as the kinder, gentler drug cartel from Colombia, and the mistakes that ultimately led to the crumbling of its well-oiled organization. The book will be published by Praeger, a member of the

Organized Crime: A Global Issue
The structure of organized criminal groups, or associations of criminals who organize crimes, continues to evolve in the 21st century. Diversification, collaboration, mergers, global networking, autonomy, expansion, and outsourcing are the modus operandi for not only legitimate corporations but are an emerging trend for many sophisticated criminal organizations. These criminal groups function as loosely-organized networks of cells that offer organizational flexibility, the reduction of law enforcement penetration, and greater efficiency. The Honored society, or Mafia, as it was less often called, was a vast criminal brotherhood that developed in Palermo and western Sicily. It rose as a reaction to centuries of misrule. What distinguished the Mafia from similar groups was the pace at which it prospered and took over Sicilian society. By 1900, it controlled virtually the entire western third of the island. Members took control of all local governments in the city and assumed management of all factories and landed estates. Eventually, the migration of thousands of immigrants from Sicily to the U.S. would bring many members of The Honored Society to New York, and it's five boroughs. The Mafia would slowly take control of New York, Chicago, Nevada, Havana, and much more of the U.S.

See if your family name or home town is part of this fascinating era.
For history buffs and lovers of California history, this book is a must:
A timeless book, a universal book about obeying or disobeying laws one dislikes, looking the other way, buying illegal products, making heroes out of criminals, working to change laws, using political clout for good or evil, corrupting officials, solving personal dilemmas, and doing the right thing. Wherever possible Walker lets rumrunners and bootleggers tell their stories. Constables and U.S. Border Patrolmen relate their experiences, and involved families tell what thy remember. These stories are filled with pathos, humor, exaggeration, but always human! Walker captures the feelings of the times, not just the events. Readers will be taken back to those exciting war years in the late 1910s, back to bootlegging, moonshining, rumrunning and prostitution times of the great Depression that changed prohibition. He has captured one of California's most enticing periods of history, one of the most significant of the 20th century-and one of the most neglected areas of California history - the Bootlegging Years!

January 6, 1996 I pledge that the following paper represents my ideas in accordance with the university Honor Code. GLOBAL ORGANIZED CRIME AS A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY Global Organized Crime in the Post-Cold War Era Since the end of the Cold War and the subsequent refocusing of Intelligence away from the Soviet Union, Global Organized Crime has been recognized as a priority threat to national security. Global Organized Crime has been defined by FBI Director Louis J. Freeh as "a continuing criminal conspiracy having a firm organizational structure, a conspiracy fed by fear and corruption." The international crimes that extend over foreign borders and into the United States include drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, arms smuggling, bribery, and fraud schemes. In recent years these criminal groups have dramatically increased the scope of their activities by taking advantage of many Post-Cold War opportunities such as the lowering of economic and political barriers; the end of communist regimes and the founding of fragile new democracies; the increase in legitimate international trade; and the advances in technology that facilitate global communication and transport. The Administration, Intelligence and Law Enforcement have reacted to the new organized crime groups, emerging on a global scale after the Cold War, by creating a strong national response. The current system is not "broken." However, the threat itself is growing in terms of its scale and complexity at a such a fast rate that it is important to look at possible ways in which the national response to Global Organized Crime can be improved. In order to understand the significance of improving current policy and national efforts against Global Organized Crime, the changing nature and seriousness of the threat must first be understood.

National Institute of Justice Organizational Structure Tong-affiliated gangs, like the Fuk Ching, have an ah kung (grandfather) or shuk foo (uncle) who is their tong leader. The top gang position is the dai dai lo (big big brother). Communicationbetween the tong and the gang occurs principally between these two individuals. Below the dai dai lo in descending order are the dai lo(s) or big brothers, the yee lo/saam lo (clique leaders), and at the bottom the ma jai or little horses. There are a variety of norms and rules that govern the gangs. These include respecting the ah kung, beating up members of other gangs on your turf, not using drugs, following the orders of the dai lo, and not betraying the gang. Rules violators are punished, sometimes severely, such as through physical assault and killing. Violence Our research and our interviews with various experts confirms that violence is a defining characteristic of Chinese criminal gangs. Use of violence within the group and against other organized crime groups is very prevalent. Disputes over territory and criminal markets among the gangs are typically resolved using kong so, a process of peaceful negotiation. When this does not occur, however, the resolution is usually a violent one, in which guns are used against rival gang members. Law enforcement authorities believe that an escalation of gang violence has taken place in recent years, due in part to the advent of the Fuk Ching, and to gang involvement in alien smuggling activities.

    The Mythical Meyer
Maybe he said it and maybe he didn't, but Meyer Lansky will forever be identified with the statement that the Syndicate, the underworld conglomerate of hoodlums, mobsters and killers from across the nation, was bigger than U.S. Steel. The boast made for good headlines and helped politicians like Estes Kefauver and Bobby Kennedy build their reputations and later achieved near-factual status when Hyman Roth, the Meyer Lansky-inspired character in the Godfather II repeated it to Michael Corleone. Whether or not Lansky ever really said it, it was probably true. Organized crime in America from the 1930s to the 1980s was big business and Meyer Lansky had helped make it that way. There is a lot about Lansky that is apocryphal. Did he, for instance, meet Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano on the same day? Probably not, but the story still floats around about how Lansky, the hard working son of Jewish immigrants, happened along one day and found Siegel and Luciano brawling over the favors of a prostitute the Italian was pimping. Lansky, the story goes, hit Luciano over the head with a tool from his apprentice's box and stopped the fight. The known facts fit Luciano did run some bordellos and no one disputes that Benny Siegel liked the ladies.

"From the evidence that has emerged, there is a strong case to be made that the looting and theft of the artifacts was perpetrated by organized criminal groups," Ashcroft said. The attorney general praised the international police agency Interpol and experts on Mesopotamian culture and art for agreeing to join forces in the hunt for 200,000 missing pieces of art. "Although the criminals who committed the thefts may have transported the objects beyond Iraq's borders, they should know that they have not escaped the reach of justice," Ashcroft told an Interpol conference.

Amid the political uncertainty that has engulfed the former Soviet Union since the end of the Cold War nearly a decade ago, rampant, unchecked organized crime has laid waste to noteworthy democratic reforms and contributed to an economic and moral meltdown within the 15 newly independent republics. Intelligence reports emanating out of Russia peg the numerical size of the Russian Mafia (“Mafiya”) at 100,000 members owing allegiance to 8,000 stratified crime groups who control 70-80% of all private business and 40% of the nation’s wealth. The largest of these groups are the Dolgopruadnanskaya and the drug-running Solntsevskaya , with 5,000 members concentrated in the Moscow suburb of Solntsevo. Vyatcheslav “Little Japanese” Ivankov, one of Russia’s deadliest and most feared career criminals founded Solntsevskaya in 1980. The current leader of this cartel is Sergei Mikhailov who is presently being detained by the authorities in Switzerland.
