View Old Starting Page Designs: Welcome to the kvl-homepage! This website presents information on organized crime from a social science perspective with a special geographical focus on the U.S. and Germany. The site has first been launched in 1999. The original purpose had been to share material collected for a doctoral dissertation with a broader public. The material includes, for example, a list of Congressional hearings on organized crime and a collection of organized crime definitions both of which have been considerably expanded over the years. A number of papers on organized-crime related subjects have also consecutively been added and are available for downloading. A more recent addition is the book review section which features reviews of books on organized crime and related topics. This site is bilingual (English and German). Some content, however, is available only in one of these two languages.

The quarterly, peer-reviewed journal Trends in Organized Crime is provided as a benefit of membership in IASOC. The journal reports exclusively on current research in all areas of organized crime and the criminal justice response to it. It is published by Transaction Publishers. Reliable information about organized crime is not always easy to obtain. A membership listing for IASOC is provided here, and it is linked to particular areas of expertise that members have self-identified. This source is designed to encourage direct inquiries from others in order to offer multiple sources of information about organized crime from among our membership.

    MS-13 GANG RACKETEERING INDICTMENT
. Nineteen suspected members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang were indicted alleging that the gang's activities amounted to a criminal racketeering enterprise. MS-13 allegedly conspired to intimidate communities and members of the organization through a series of murders, assaults and kidnappings. The gang is traditionally made up of immigrants from El Salvador , and its U.S. activities originated in Los Angeles during the 1980s. The indictment portrays MS-13's membership in the USA at 10,000 and highlights the group's ability to coordinate activities with associates in more than 30 states. But earlier this year, MS-13 was not ranked as the leading gang threat in much of the nation, according to the government-sponsored 2005 National Gang Threat Assessment http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/what/2005_threat_assesment.pdf.

The Influence of Criminal Organisations in Banking and Finance
The Mafia, and similar criminal organisations in other countries, are moving up-market, in fact as in fiction. The novel Nest of Vipers described how the Mafia could use the banking system. Unfortunately, in real life too, the tentacles of the Mafia and the Yakuza are spreading through the arena of international finance, as the links in this page show.

    American Organized Crime
American Organized Crime is a collection of articles on organized crime and the Mafia in the USA. Ultimately, I hope to cover organized crime from the earliest gangs right up to the present day, but with such a large subject it is easier to concentrate on one period at a time. For now, all my work is focused on the years before and during the Prohibition. This is partly because I like to start at the beginning, and partly because Prohibition was a huge factor in gangsters' rise to power.
