Organic Gardening
In recent years much attention has been given to gardening organically. The intense interest in ecology and concern about the environment have been responsible for the renewed interest in this form of gardening. By using natural minerals and materials, by taking advantage of natural predators, and by recycling garden waste, the home gardener can maintain an organic garden quite successfully. It is difficult in one article to give even the basics of this type of gardening. Rather than explain all the technical phases or reasons for gardening this way, I will simply give you a few suggestions of things you can do to begin gardening organically. Composting - Compost supplies the soil with a rich, friable source of humus and helps retain moisture in the garden, in addition to supplying valuable nutrients. By placing grass clippings, fallen leaves and unused plant parts in a compost pile, you are preparing them, through decomposition, to be put back to work for you. Composting actually recycles garden waste and returns the nutrients that have been taken from the soil. By using organic composting agents, it is possible to speed-up the process of decomposition. Over the years, composting has gotten a reputation for being a time-consuming job, but this is not necessarily the case. You don't need to build a big box or turn the pile every so often. A barrel, a hole in the ground or a pile on top of the ground is satisfactory. The important requirement is to be sure the waste material is covered with soil, so it doesn't attract rats, other rodents or flies.

L. Mulcrone, Information Officer, Rockhampton The aim of this note is to provide alternatives to synthetic chemicals for the control of insect pests and diseases in the home garden. Synthetic chemicals are those that have been chemically processed or manufactured and are not permitted for use in certified organic farming. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a strategy that uses a range of methods to control insect pests in horticulture and agriculture. These include synthetic pesticides (used only when absolutely neccessary), beneficial insects, biological insecticides, cultural practises, resistant varieties, botanical pesticides and natural products. The last five control methods listed will be discussed further in this information note.
Cultural practises
Plant diversity
A garden with a diverse plant life encourages natural populations of beneficial insects into the home garden.

"Thus, if I make a garden, "I need not print a line, nor conjure with the painter's tools to prove myself an artist...Whilst in other spheres of labor the greater part of our life's toil and moil will of a surety end, as the wise man predicted, in vanity and vexation of spirit, here is instant physical refreshment in the work the garden entails, and, in the end, our labor will be crowned with flowers."

Hello fellow Gardeners! I've been into Organic gardening for about seven years growing Vegetables, Flowers, and Herbs. Here I'd like to thank my Mother, for all her knowledge, given so freely (and for all the starts of plants she's given). Thanks Mom!!! Thanks also to the people at Organic Gardening Magazine and Rodale Press (Organic Gardening Books) for much of the info I've learned regarding the safe and natural way to garden. I highly recommend this Magazine and Rodale Press. In the fall, winter and spring I use a 12' by 24' solar and woodburner heated greenhouse to start seedlings, grow vegetables and to over winter many of the plants that I use to decorate my yard and deck with in the summer. I have corresponded and traded seed and information with gardeners from all over the U.S. and some in foriegn countries. In doing so I gained access to many difficult to find and unusual plants and met some very nice people. On this page you will find info and also links that I have found interesting and useful and I really hope you do to!

What does organic gardening mean to you? There are as many different views on what organic gardening means as there are people. Some interpret it to mean old-fashioned, some believe it involves the use of homemade concoctions, others believe it means complete chemical-free gardening. The basic meaning of organic gardening is that it relies on cultural practices and natural products rather than the use of synthetic or petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides. Crop rotation, cultural weed control, and integrated pest management for insect and disease control are emphasized and implemented. Many people have a picture-perfect image of their flower beds, vegetable gardens, lawns and landscapes. And why not, advertisers certainly don't show us nature's imperfections. Organic gardeners tolerate small amounts of damage or imperfections. "Weeds" may be present in their lawn. However, they may also be enjoying dandelion greens for dinner. The clover in their lawn may have been planted to help provide nitrogen. Their apples may have some dimples or tracks through them. The sweet corn may have a section cut out where an earworm had been. The crabapple tree may be void of foliage because of apple scab or the lilac foliage white with powdery mildew. Maple trees may have red bumps on the underside of their leaves because of maple erineum gall. The trees may have a sticky substance (honeydew) being produced during the summer as a result of aphid infestation. These situations are tolerated by organic gardeners.

  • Quick Tip: Organic Gardening From " Ask DIY "
    episode ADI-401 advertisement
A thriving garden doesn't have to depend on chemical fertilizers and insecticides, says Ask DIY Gardening expert Jessie Mack Burns. With good basic care and natural-based additives, you can achieve healthy, gorgeous plants and flowers in a few easy steps!
    • First, evaluate the condition of your soil to make sure it's nutrient-rich. Organic matter is the key to every healthy garden, so if your soil is low in this department, beef it up! Adding compost or peat moss to your flowerbeds will go a long way in helping your plants establish a good root system.
    • Secondly, choose plants that are native to your area for best results.
    • Two to three times a year, treat your plants to a feeding of slow-release organic fertilizer.
    • While watering needs will vary according to location, a good rule of thumb is to water deeply at least once a week.
    • Add mulch to help plants retain their moisture.
    • Finally, control harmful insects with non-toxic alternatives like soap, pepper and beneficial insects.

The Global Crisis Advisory We at The Ark Institute trust that you recognize that a very serious crisis may confront the United States this Fall or at any time in the next year. It is especially serious because of all the developed nations of the world, the United States is simply the least prepared in virtually every way! Hard to believe, isn’t it? We didn’t want to believe it either, but the facts were just too shocking to ignore! We now recognize our Government sees the writing on the wall as well, because there is a sudden flurry of coverage of bird flu on virtually all media outlets, and an occasional interview granted or statement made by a public health official. At least they’ll be able to say, “We told you so!” Given the poor level of preparation in this country and the fact that other countries will not be coming to our rescue with vaccines, anti-virals, mechanical respirators, masks and other critical supplies (they will be taking care of their own citizens), it is going to be up to all of us to

Organic gardeners attempt to work in harmony with nature to produce healthy crops. One of the keys of organic gardening is to build a healthy soil ecosystem through the incorporation of compost, manure, cover crops, and rock minerals. Composted yard waste is applied to agricultural crops as a nutrient source. Good soil is essential to grow healthy plants that are able to survive pests and diseases. Organic gardeners also rotate crops, monitor insect populations, exclude pests from plants with barriers, select pest resistant crop varieties, and encourage natural predators to manage pest and disease problems. But they may resort to botanical pesticides (made from plants) or to pesticides made from naturally occurring minerals (e.g., sulfur). So organic does not necessarily mean without pesticides. Organic food is defined by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) as food produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. As a result of 1988 legislation sought by the Tilth Producers Coop, the state began certifying organic farms. The WSDA's Organic Food Certification Program verifies the claims of organic farmers through on-site inspections, pesticide residue testing, and maintaining audit trails on organic food products.

There is a section on planting by the Moon - a practise steeped in history but posing problems between the two commonly used zodiacs. You don't have to be a believer in Astrology to enjoy gardening. Many noted gardeners use the Moon's cycles successfully. Biodynamic gardening uses it extensively, as did Rudolph Steiner. But the tradition is steeped in history. 140. Henry's Organic Gardening Tips
organic gardening for hot and dry climates.
    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Ithaca/1853/organic.html
      Organic Gardening
After spending nearly most of my life in hot dry climate, and working with the soil locally, I have come to know just how to prepare the dry soil to produce a healthy and thriving garden. I am sharing some recommendations in this page to help people, who live in the southwestern area, select the best possible site upon their property to have a successful garden. Some of which are:
        • Site must be exposed to full sun or nearly full sun. A Southern exposure is the best for a garden to get 6 hours minimum of full sunlight to be successful.
        • Plant rows in a north and south line for early sun.
        • Protect plants after 1pm in the summer with shade cloth.
        • Use stable walkways like walking stones to avoid walking directly upon the garden soil.
        • Arizona soil often times contains caliche, so it is recommended to make a raised bed above it.
        Things to avoid
        • Low areas to avoid pooling of water
        • Steep slopes so water has time to seep in before running off.
        • Shaded areas, as the plants require at least 6 hours of full or partial sunlight.
        • Near trees due to the problem with tree roots interfering with turning soil.
