Certification
There are two types of organic vegetable production in North Dakota, certified vegetable production and non-certified vegetable production. Certified vegetable production refers to raising produce under the production standards of the certifying organizations. The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 is working policy toward a national standard for organic production. The goal of this act is to standardize organic production. Currently there are a number of certification groups with their own standards of organic production in the United States. Commercial organic producers are all certified by one verifying system or another. Certificates are necessary because it is impossible to market organic vegetables commercially without this certificate. Wholesale buyers demand it. The principle certification organizations in North Dakota are: FVO - Farm Verified Organic OCIA - Organic Crop Improvement Association OGBA - Organic Growers and Buyers Association Fees are charged for certification or membership. Remember, in order to be certified, guidelines set forth by the organization must be followed.

Whether we know it or not, many of us already practice forms of organic gardening. We just don't give it any thought. Organic gardening is the practice of growing fruits and vegetables, using only things found in nature. Absolutely no man-made chemicals are used. Although we usually do not think of it, Organic Gardening concepts also apply to the world of flowers, trees, shrubs, and even your lawn. It is gardening without harmful and artificial chemicals, or other products not naturally found in nature. Commonly today, chemicals and non-natural products are used for fertilizing, and for control of insects, disease, and weeds. Did you Know?

Organic Gardening: A Guide to Resources: 1989-September 2003
Introduction
Background
Organic Gardening and Farming, Look to the Land , by Lord Northbourne. Not just a technique, but a philosophy as well, the components of what we now call organic gardening and farming have been practiced for centuries. Practice of good husbandry of the land was of significant importance to ancient writers such as Cato, Virgil, Pliny and Columella. The rotation of crops was recommended by Thomas Tusser in his classic and often reprinted work of 1580, Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry 1864 Report of the U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture

" There is more pleasure in making a garden than in contemplating a paradise."
Anne Scott-James
Gardening in harmony with nature
For 60 years, the members of Austin Organic Gardeners have shared information about successfully raising vegetables and ornamentals without using harsh fertilizers that harm the soil and toxic pesticides that disturb the ecological balance. The club's philosophy is that human and animal health depends on the health of the soil that produces their food. Healthy soil, which is rich in organic matter, abounds with organisms that convert minerals in the soil into forms plants can use. The well-nourished plants growing in these soils are better able to defend themselves against attacks from insects, diseases, and other pests. Please send comments or requests for information to AOG

49. Roses
Lists over 100 Old Garden and English roses with pictures and information on organic gardening.
http://www.amypadgett.com/Roses.htm
Roses in History - If you want to know what grew when, check out this series of pages. Rose List - We have over a 100 roses and documented their appearance and hardiness in the humid South. Most are old garden roses as they seem better suited to our regime of benign neglect, although we have added some English roses for variety. For several years, we tried to grow Hybrid Teas, but after no luck and a lot of money, we gave up on the fussy Hybrid Teas and just grow old roses (more or less). Note: a lot of growers in our area are perfectly able to grow beautiful Hybrid Teas, although they all use horse manure to condition the soil every fall/spring and spray regularly. (Okay, you got meI confess, I simply do not like Hybrid Teas.) Neglect does work. In 2001, our shrub rose, Dortmund won Best-of-Show Shrub rose at the New Bern Rose show, and our Victorian-era rose, Mme. Alfred Carriere, won Best-of-Show Victorian rose. Many of the older roses got blue ribbons in 2001 and 2002. So you can garden organically. The birds really appreciate it, too. Cardinals and Mockingbirds are eating the rose hips (or heps, if you prefer). One pair of Bobwhite Quail are nesting at the base of our old Bourbon rose, Louise Odier . And we have over 24 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. For those who grow roses and live in the South (zones 7-8 or deeper into the south), you may profit from our experiences. Especially if your soil is basically gray, acidic clay.
