Livelihood Security and Organic Agriculture. The Case of Uganda
M ICHAEL H AUSER
University of Agricultural Sciences (BOKU), Institute of Organic Farming, Austria
In Uganda, a high proportion of the rural population is poor or vulnerable to become poor. To them, agriculture is an important livelihood strategy. Over the years, organic agriculture has developed into a booming sub-sector and an increasing number of farmers have responded to the rising international demand for certified organic produce from less industrialised countries. Uganda is currently exporting coffee, sesame, cotton and fruits to the European Union, Asia and North America. Some of the cocoa and vanilla production is under conversion. Given the enormous drive of the organic sub-sector in a globalizing world, the question is what organic agriculture has to offer for the poor and the vulnerable segments of the Ugandan society. This paper describes the progress of a study that aims to contribute to a better understanding of (a) the impact of organic agriculture on livelihood security, and in particular on the asset base of farmers and

Organic Viticulture in New York
(The SARE Project)
From 1990 to 1995 a multidisciplinary group of Cornell faculty, grape growers and members of the organic farming community carried on a joint study to explore the feasibility of organic grape production in New York. This project was funded by the federal Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension program ( SARE To ensure that the findings would be available to interested parties, a seminar was held at the end of the project. In addition to presenting data from the NY study, presentations were made by invited speakers from around the world. These presentations were published as a NYSAES Special Report and are presented here in pdf form. Many people consider cotton to be the purest fiber on earth. Or as a recent ad campaign suggests, "the fabric of our lives." In fact, cotton cultivation inflicts a heavy toll on the environment. But a small number of farmers is now growing cotton "organically." This means they eliminate toxic chemicals in every step of the growing process, by emphasizing natural, biological methods which have far less impact on the environment. This web-site examines why chemical-free production is important and shows how you can become involved in choosing organic. Community Supported Organic Agriculture
New! CSA Project for the 2005 Season! What is CSA
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a type of cooperative farming that redefines the relationship between farmers and consumers. Its purpose is not only to provide consumers (shareholders) with the freshest possible organic produce, but also to build community and offer a connection to the Earth. Each shareholder (individual or family) pays the farmer a set fee in advance of the growing season. In return the farmer provides shareholders with a weekly bounty of produce from mid-May to mid-October. We plan to offer our shareholders access to additional farm products such as eggs, organic meats, honey, and flowers. Shareholder visits are welcomed, and indeed expected at the farm as there will be many opportunities for both work (weeds!) and play (parties, potlucks) throughout the season. We are excited about Silver Wheel Farm CSA, and we look forward to forging a partnership to build a community of farmers and friends.
