News Flash! Order new book on EcoVillage from our Online Store! How do we respond to the news that 50% of Earth's species may go extinct in this century? Or that the Oil Age may be coming to a close? Or that a typical American family uses more than 5 times its fair share of available natural resources? One response is to join with others who share a commitment to working toward a sustainable culture. EcoVillage at Ithaca , a member of the Ecovillage Network of the Americas, is comprised of an intentional community and a non-profit organization. Our goal is to explore and model innovative approaches to ecological and social sustainability. We're creating a unique village which includes cohousing neighborhoods, organic agriculture, an education center, and natural areas, preserving and restoring over 80% of the land as green space. The residential component of EcoVillage will be comprised of 3-4 tightly clustered cohousing neighborhoods surrounding a shared commons. The first neighborhood (FROG) was completed in 1997, the homes of the second neighborhood (SONG) were completed in 2004, and the SONG Common House is planned to be built in 2005. Future residential development of 30+ homes in our "north field" is anticipated, but no active plans exist at present.

Alternatives to Synthetic Chemical Insecticides for Use in Crucifer Crops
Nancy M. Endersby and Wendy C. Morgan Institute of Plant Sciences, Department of Agriculture, P.O. Box 381, Frankston, Victoria 3199, Australia
ABSTRACT
Current public concern about the possible adverse effects of agricultural chemicals on health and the environment has generated interest in reducing chemical inputs in vegetable growing. Crucifers are important vegetable crops in Australia and are subjected to attack by lepidopterous pests especially diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella (L.)) and cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae (L.)). Control options for cabbage pests reviewed here include use of natural insecticides (mainly plant-based). physical barriers. biological control. insect sterilization.. intercropping, companion planting and host plant resistance. Successful reduced chemical insect control should concentrate on combining several Of these options in complete pest management systems.
INTRODUCTION
Current public concern about some chemicals in agriculture causing health and environmental problems, and the requirements of some overseas countries for no chemical residues in agricultural products, has reinforced the need to develop techniques to eliminate or reduce the present level of chemical inputs in vegetable growing. In Australia in 1988, $554) million (Morgan, 1989) was spent on the purchase of agricultural chemicals for insect, weed and ease control of which approximately 20% was for insecticides.

Organic Agriculture in Rural Development Whose Agenda?
J OHANNES K OTSCHI
Association for the Promotion of Locally Adapted Land Use in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe (AGRECOL), Germany
Introduction Organic Agriculture (OA) in Developing Countries is dominated by interests, values and norms from the North. This limits its spread, restricts its importance as an innovative concept for self-sustained rural development and, ultimately, inhibits the worldwide growth of markets for organic produce. There are thousands of local initiatives which strive for Organic Agriculture, with no access to the global market and with an urgent need for support. From the northern perspective they are often labelled as ``hidden Organic Agriculture'' or ``Organic by Neglect'' and considered as part of the global movement. But there is little awareness of their potentials and needs, which differ significantly from northern settings. The enthusiasm about the increase in organic trade in the North has diverted attention from this problem, with the result that the potential for development of Organic Agriculture in the South is under utilised. Description of Approach AGRECOL, a German NGO, has started an initiative under the theme ``Organic Agriculture for Rural Development''. The project aims to contribute to the endogenous development of Organic Agriculture and, thus, to increase its importance in revitalising agriculture towards sustainable food security. Local NGO from all over the world have been invited to participate, and an E-group of around 80 members has been established. By E-mail dialogue the group exchanges experiences, analyses shortcomings, and identifies solutions. A part of the group will meet in Bonn/Germany for a workshop in late October. Together with European professionals they will share ideas and initiate appropriate measures in order to overcome identified constraints.
