Elly Hushour backed into the goat dairy business when she went shopping for raw goat milk and came home with a doe and two kids. Since then her farm, based near Nazareth in eastern Pennsylvania, has gradually expanded to a dairy herd of 62, cheesemaking, 60 meat goats a year and a thriving breeding stock export business. Puget Sound Fresh is a program begun by the King County Agriculture Commission to encourage consumers, wholesalers, retailers and restaurants to seek out and purchase locally-grown products. Now Snohomish, Pierce, Kitsap and other counties have joined the program to help keep our farmers farming. The Cascade Harvest Coalition , a non-profit organization dedicated to local agriculture, has partnered with the counties to promote and plan the program. The program is designed to increase consumer preference for locally-grown products by identifying those products with a Puget Sound Fresh sticker or banner. Area grocery stores and farmers markets are being invited to promote local produce and farm products by using the logo. Look and ask for Puget Sound Fresh where you shop.
