WV Organic Certification Cost Share Application Certified organic production exists in more than 100 nations worldwide. Here in the United States, the National Organic Program defines organic agriculture as farming which “responds to site-specific conditions by integrating cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity” (NOP, 2000). To achieve these standards, the organic producer must pay particular attention to record-keeping, as certification requires field maps, management records, input records, soil tests, and pest monitoring data. While this may seem daunting, proper management and accurate records help ensure the continued quality and reputation of organic food products to consumers, who have expressed increasing demands for organics in recent years.

Biodiversity for Food Security

16 October 2004
How does Biodiversity benefit natural and agricultural ecosystems?
PRODUCTIVITY: Conservation and management of broad-based genetic diversity within domesticated species have been improving agricultural production for 10,000 years, however diverse natural populations have been providing food and other products for much longer. A wide range of species provides many thousands of products through agriculture and from the harvest of natural populations. High production levels are sustained through maximising the beneficial impact of ecosystem services for agricultural, modified and natural ecosystems. ADAPTATION: A diverse range of organisms contributes to the resilience of agricultural and natural ecosystems, their capacity to recover from environmental stress and their ability to evolve. Informed adaptive management of agricultural and natural biodiversity, above and below ground and under water secures sustained production. MAINTENANCE OF ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS: Essential functions such as nutrient cycling, decomposition of organic matter, crusted or degraded soil rehabilitation, pest and disease regulation, water quality, and pollination are maintained by a wide range of biologically diverse populations in natural ecosystems and in and near agricultural ecosystems. Maintaining this diversity of species and building on and enhancing ecosystem functions reduces external input requirements by increased nutrient availability, improved water use and soil structure, and natural control of pests.

In Europe the area farmed organically is continuing to expand. Growth of land and of the number of organic farms is accompanied by better policy support, a growing market and increasing research activities. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) will present current trends at the Biofach Congress 2005, February 24.
According to FiBL and the Welsh Institute of Rural Sciences, by December 31, 2003 more than 5.8 million hectares were managed organically by some 151,000 farms in European Union (EU) and EFTA countries. This constituted 3.4% of the total agricultural area.
FiBL expects the organic area to continue to grow over the next years. This will happen particularly in the new EU member states, where accession has triggered major growth. The European action plan for organic food and farming as well as other policy support measures can be expected to boost organic farming in all 25 European countries in the future.
The new European Action Plan for Organic Farming is a milestone for the organic sector in Europe. Matthias Stolze of FiBL criticises, however, that the European Commission did not set clear targets for the development of organic farming in the EU and did not allocate financial resources for its implementation. Nonetheless, with the action plan the Commission has underlined the importance of organic farming as a component of EU agricultural policy.

Topics in Sustainable Agriculture Index: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture Statement of Purpose: Needs of Sustainable Agriculture: The Promise of Sustainable Agriculture: ... Links: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture There is a battle waging within agriculture today, a battle that is pitting large segments of agribusiness against the sustainable agriculture movement. Opponents of sustainable agriculture control much of the media and therefore their opinions dominate the debate and the minds of the masses. They assert that if farmers stop using chemicals (that they just happen to produce) the world would starve. They cite biased economic studies, such as the one conducted by Thomas Foster (an agricultural economist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the National Fertilizer Development Center) in which he claims "Taking chemicals out of agriculture could mean cutting exports in half, 217,000 fewer jobs, rampant inflation, and a huge increase in food costs. . . Yields generally fell in all scenarios while costs per unit of crop increased in all cases." ( Omaha World-Herald 15 November 1990, 19). This type of economic study (even if totally correct) is extremely irresponsible. It is obvious that the conversion away from chemically based agriculture "is a slow, methodical, step-at-a-time procedure"(p.94

The Standards go far beyond how to grow an organic lawn. They present a philosophy of ecological stewardship in designing and maintaining landscapes. Over 60 pages long, the Standards are the result of more than two years' work by landscape professionals, scientists and citizen activists. The Organic Land Care Program was formed in 1999 to extend the vision and principles of organic agriculture to the care of the landscapes where most people live, work, and carry out their daily lives. Copies of the Standards for Organic Land Care are available for $20 plus $3 shipping and handling. http://www.greenontario.org/strategy/agriculture.html
Green Farms What can be done to make farming more environmentally friendly? The first thing would be to stop the loss of farmland to urban sprawl. Southern Ontario has about 50 per cent of Canada's prime agricultural land, and we are paving it over at an alarming rate. The second action would be to promote organic agriculture as a more benign form or agriculture. The third action is to improve the level of environmental stewardship on all farms, to minimize the environmental impacts of manure, pesticides and herbicides, and intensive farming practices. This factsheet looks at the current activities in these three areas. For more information, see also Urban Sprawl for the protection of farmland and Organic and Natural Food in the Buy Green section.
