Possibilities and limitations of protein supply
One of the objectives of Organic Revision is to provide more knowledge on how to achieve 100 % organic rations in diets for livestock ( workpackage 4
A new, preliminary report on Possibilities and limitations of protein supply in organic poultry and pig production (PDF) provides an overview of the many different aspects of protein supply in organic poultry and pig production. Part 1 describes the objective of organic livestock production and introduces the situation. Part 2 describes protein sources in conventional and organic livestock production. In part 3 the effect of protein supply of groups of poultry and pigs with different protein requirements are described. Part 4 is a discussion about the effect on product quality. Conclusions and preliminary recommendations are given in Part 5, 6 and 7 respectively. The report is preliminary and it is based on the available literature and limited time and resources in the project. There might be relevant literature that we are not aware of. We are therefore releasing this preliminary report in order to get inputs to the final revision. Especially feedbacks on relevant scientific literature, which are not mentioned in the report, will very welcome.

Information on the Amendment
to Germany´s Genetic Modification Act
I. Introduction Under Article 26a of Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment, Member States are entitled to take appropriate measures to avoid the unintended presence of genetically modified organisms in other products. The Amendment to the Genetic Modification Act (the Amendment) implements Directive 2001/18/EC and aims to ensure GM-free production and the co-existence of GM crops and non-GM crops. The Amendment has finally passed the parliamentary procedure on 26 November 20 and is likely to enter in force beginning of 2005. Its key provisions are set out below.
II. Provisions to ensure the protection of GM-free farming (coexistence provisions)
To protect GM-free farming, the Amendment provides three instruments:
  • an obligation to take precautionary action to prevent "material negative effects" of GMOs, in particular compliance with "good farming practice" in the cultivation of GM crops

Urban Schools Agricultural Projects
This is an exciting agricultural-related grant program for urban elementary public school pupils enrolled in districts with populations of 49,000 or more. Projects are limited only to the extent of an applicant’s imagination.
