These soldiers were sent out west to explore and map areas while stringing telegraph lines and protecting railroad workers. The Comanche and Cheyenne nicknamed the cavalry units Buffalo Soldiers. Chinese on the Western Frontier Immigrants from China poured into gold-rich California in 1852 and kept on coming, mostly working as laborers who seemingly would do everything that Anglos wouldn't or couldn't do. First Transcontinental Car Race Crossed Oregon Trail The journey across the United States was a pretty rough trip in 1905, but two motorized buckboards set out to navigate the Oregon Trail. By Peter Webster Sixty years after the first great columns of prairie schooners lumbered along the Oregon Trail, two tiny and primitive automobiles followed the historic ruts across the West. The year was 1905, and the cars were in the first transcontinental automobile race. The pair of 7-horsepower Curved Dash (so called because of the sleighlike front of the body) Olds Runabouts made their historic journey from New York City to Portland, Ore. Essentially motorized buckboards, these were the first automobiles negotiating the Oregon Trail, first to cross the United States from east to west and the first over the Cascade Range. Although parts of the United States were quite "civilized," in 1905, the 20th century was only a spotty veneer over the western United States. The little cars and their drivers faced bad weather, sickness, wild animals, thirst, accidents and unforeseen breakdowns. Crossing the Oregon Trail was still a rough trip.

Ease of Use System Requirements PC Mac Price Survey Product Support Oregon Trail CD is the descendent of one of the earliest educational software programs. Users are presented with a very simple screen that provides 4 windows of information and tools: a small graphic simulating the movement of a wagon across the landscape, a progress line traced on a map, a daily journal, and a status scoreboard that monitors stores, health, and progress. None of the graphics are exceptional by today's software standards, but they are adequate to the task. Educational Value Users are challenged to make a series of decisions to guide their party from Independence, Missouri to Oregon's Willamette Valley, by covered wagon. These decisions begin with provisioning the wagon and choosing a departure date, through daily decisions relating to pace, restocking and direction. Users face an unending series of obstacles: fires, floods, injuries, no water, bad water, no grass, food spoilage, etc. The life-or-death decisions faced by the settlers are even reinforced by the loss of party members! Kid Appeal Our testers reported mixed results on this important measure of long-term interest-holding power. For those children interested in the old west, and American history, Oregon Trail was a big hit. "My son would go up to his room after school, and play until dinner," reported one parent.
