LORI ASSA — The Daily Astorian
“We’re doing pretty good with what we have,” says junior Henry Balensifer, student director of the hatchery at Warrenton High School. “We’re running with equipment that has been here since the ’70s.” WHS fish hatchery spawns students’ learning, but revived program still needs help

WARRENTON — Henry Balensifer made tankmates out of white cloud minnows and what he soon found out was a minnow-eating African dwarf frog when he was in eighth grade, and he tested the waters for raising fish he found in the Skipanon River, discovering that his tank’s environment was too warm for the common sticklebacks.

    Cycle Oregon Mission Statement
Cycle Oregon is a non-profit organization dedicated to bicycling enjoyment, safety and education. All proceeds from the ride go to the Cycle Oregon Fund at the Oregon Community Foundation which helps preserve and protect the special places of Oregon and supports community development projects in the regions through which we ride. top
Cycle Oregon Fund: Funding Rural Oregon
It started with little fanfare, in the parking lot out back of a grocery store. At the tail end of the very first Cycle Oregon tour, the sun was out and we all felt great. Hundreds of riders lingered that afternoon, reluctant to call it a day. So moved had we been by the warmth of the welcomes we had received in so many small towns along our route that we wanted to give a little something, anything, back. Not knowing what else to do, we passed the hat, raised a few thousand dollars, and then pledged to share it with people working on community development projects in the regions through which we had ridden. Today that pot of gratitude, The Cycle Oregon Fund, contains almost $1 million. Each year, all proceeds from our tours are added to the Fund, from which we currently make annual grants totaling approximately $100,000 to assist a wide range of projects throughout the state.
