Kitzhaber Lauds Tourism
by Suzanne Marta (Excerpt)
For about 300 days of the year, David Nissen guides small groups hiking through the forests of Deschutes County and paddling canoes along its rivers.Through his Bend-based company Wanderlust Tours, Nissen promotes Oregon's natural beauty, while teaching visitors about its environmental tenets.
Wanderlust Tours is one of many Oregon companies that, according to Gov. John Kitzhaber , will keep the state's tourism industry viable. For Nissen and his wife Aleta, promoting Oregon's natural beauty has become a matter of protecting their region's viability as a tourist destination. Over the last decade, the Bend area has been one of the state's fastest growing."We worry that when people drive through Bend and see the Costco and Target, they're not going to know what's special about Bend," David Nissen said. "We're trying to preserve our natural environment through sustainable tourism."
The Nissens grapple with growth even within their business. In its first year, the company guided 87 people on its tours. Now, the company often serves that many in one day a change that calls for careful consideration, Aleta Nissen said. "We need to be creative to keep taking people out while minimizing the impact on the area."

This year's Governor's Conference on Tourism, held April 18-20 in Portland, offered great opportunity for learning, networking and promoting tourism in Washington County. This location allowed for additional exposure to 1,000+ attendees of the National Cancer Research Conference. Special thanks to Royce Mason from the Prop Shop for his support in helping decorate the Washington County booth at the Governor's Conference. The CVB of Washington County hosted an Agri-Tourism Seminar and Mobile Workshop on Monday. The seminar and mobile workshop were designed to inform tourism professionals from throughout Oregon about agri-tourism opportunities with Oregon agriculture products. The event raised awareness on how growers, marketers, and the tourism industry can partner to develop agri-tourism enterprises, adding value to agriculture products. The seminar also covered how to offer new and unique agri-tourism opportunities. The afternoon mobile workshop toured Jossy Farms in Hillsboro, Tualatin Valley Potato in Scholls, and Ponzi Vineyards in Beaverton.

Central Oregon tourism group supports funds for marketing ski resort (The Bulletin, Bend, Ore.)
By Chris Barker, The Bulletin, Bend, Ore.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Jul. 27It may be midsummer, but tourism boosters already are plotting how to lure next year's crop of skiers and snowboarders to Central Oregon. The question posed Tuesday: Should Mount Bachelor and the Central Oregon Visitors Association (COVA) spend $200,000 promoting Mount Bachelor and the region in Seattle or across Oregon? "We're faced with two really powerful choices: Do we try to own Oregon or do we try to maintain ground in this relatively new market?" said Alana Audette, president and chief executive officer of COVA. In either case, the goal is maximizing visitors in a central Oregon economy heavily dependent on tourist spending. In a straw vote Tuesday, COVA's board voted 6-3 to spend $200,000 of COVA and Mount Bachelor money marketing the ski resort and central Oregon in Seattle. Each would contribute $100,000. Last year, COVA and Mount Bachelor each contributed $100,000 toward a $240,000 marketing campaign in Seattle. Other sources contributed $40,000.

Jobs Oregon Tourism Commission Launches New Travel Magazine In a move to bolster tourism and increase awareness of the beauty and attractions of Oregon, the Oregon Tourism Commission (OTC) has unveiled a new magazine designed to promote travel to and within the state. Called Travel Oregon , the four-color glossy represents the first time OTC has blended a travel guide with the look and feel of a contemporary lifestyle magazine. The new magazine includes a combination of feature stories on popular Oregon offerings, special interest sections, a calendar of events, and suggested trip itineraries. The premier 128-page "Spring/Summer" issue includes feature stories on Oregon's lush public gardens, paddling the wild Rogue River, exploring eastern Oregon, golfing hotspots, suggested three-day getaways, and the state's bountiful farms and orchards, including recipes to try at home. The magazine represents a significant departure from the travel guide format previously used by the commission, which included mostly facts and figures, offering no feature articles or seasonal focus. Unlike the previous travel guide, which was updated every other year, Travel Oregon will be published twice a year and feature new, seasonal stories in each issue.

Tourism Trends in Oregon The Oregon Tourism Commission seeks to revive the state's tourism industry and its importance to the state economy. It formally launched its statewide Tourism Recovery Plan in October 2001. The Oregon Economic and Community Development Department committed an initial $200,000 to stimulate travel to and within Oregon and is seeking increased funding for statewide tourism marketing. This fact and others can be found at the Oregon Tourism Commission website. The impact of the destination travel industry varies widely throughout Oregon. The state as a whole has experienced an average annual percentage growth of about 6.5% in annual destination travel spending over the last 10 years. Wheeler, Sherman, Gilliam and Wasco Counties have averaged 4.2% over the same period of time. Total destination travel spending in Wheeler County in 2000 was $4.1 million. Only Wheeler, Gilliam, Sherman and Morrow counties had lower travel spending of all the other counties in the state. By comparison, counties in the central Oregon region were much better. In 2000, Crook County recorded $23.4 million in travel spending and Deschutes County had $356.7 million. Highlighted below are the current regional economic destination travel impact figures for Grant and Wheeler Counties and the northern counties of Sherman, Gilliam and Wasco.
