Oregon Tourism Commission - Agency History
Written 2004 History
The desire to more effectively promote tourism in Oregon resulted in the creation of the Travel Information Bureau under the State Highway Commission in 1935. The Legislative Assembly authorized the commission to compile, publish, and disseminate information including historical facts, data, and maps about parks, recreation areas, and other public places in the state (OL 1935, c.195). Policy guidance was provided to the commission by the Travel Advisory Committee. The State Highway Fund paid for the costs associated with the program. By the 1950s the bureau was commonly known as the Travel Information Division of the State Highway Department. It carried out an aggressive advertising campaign that included newspapers, magazines, mail, travel trade shows, and scenic movies. The division also helped to develop state information centers at major points of entry to disseminate information and promote tourism. The 1969 creation of the Department of Transportation changed the Travel Information Division to a section under the Highway Division. Goals set by the Travel Advisory Committee in the late 1960s included attracting visitors who would most likely use the state commercial facilities; encouraging visitors to stay longer; stimulating fall, winter, and spring travel; attracting visitors to Oregon's less traveled regions; and encouraging Oregonians to vacation in Oregon. Later emphasis was placed on publicizing year-round resort accommodations as well as vacation activities not directly related to scenery.

Additionally, we are building partnerships with cultural organizations and destinations in order to launch a cultural tourism campaign, with public relations and other marketing elements. Oregon has high-end resorts, world-class golf, fantastic regional cuisine, award-winning wines, 62 districts on the National Register of Historic Places, nearly 500 museums and art galleries, nine native tribes, and four National Historic Trails. All of these cultural amenities are backdropped by our incredible scenery and geographic diversity. The challenge is to package our culture with this beauty. Julie Curtis, Assistant Director

Background
This issue has an element of urgency for two reasons. If the harvest proceeds as planned, the damage will be permanent and Oregon will lose a resource of national significance. This loss will take place on the Highway 199 corridor, the highway with the largest collection of nationally significant resources of any road through the coastal range of Oregon, Washington and California. Highway 199 - Biscuit Fire -Tourism Issue Page 1 Vista of the Wild and Scenic Illinois River from the TJ Howell Botanical Drive. The TJ Howell Botanical Drive is an eighteen mile road that starts at Highway 199 and climbs into the mountains to where it ends at the boundary of the Kalmiopsis wilderness. It follows the Wild and Scenic Illinois River corridor for the first three miles where salmon can be seen migrating in the fall. The first seven miles of the road goes through one of the largest serpentine rock outcrops in the nation. Despite the fact that this area gets the same amount of precipitation as the deep forest found later in the drive, the vegetation has more the appearance of east Oregon desert plant communities. This odd assemblage of plants is a reflection of the way plants interact with minerals found in the serpentine rock.

WANDERLUST TOURS INVITED TO WORK WITH OREGON TOURISM COMMISSION ON GOVERNORÕS SUSTAINABLE OREGON INITIATIVE
PRESS RELEASE ARCHIVE
November 15, 2000
Wanderlust Tours was recently invited to attend the first session of the Oregon Tourism Commission’s new Sustainable Tourism Working Group. The process is the result of an executive order from Governor Kitzhaber that mandates that "the State of Oregon shall develop and promote policies and programs that will assist Oregon to meet a goal of sustainability within one generation."
The Commission invited select state agencies, organizations and companies to help develop principles of sustainability that can be applied to the tourism industry. Wanderlust Tours was invited to share its ideas as a leader in the state that has been practicing sustainable tourism since its inception in 1993.
