"Founded in 1986, North Cascades Institute is the Northwest's premier environmental education organization focusing on natural and cultural history. Our mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments by building an ecologically literate and engaged public. "Teaching all ages, we encourage hands-on discovery and stewardship of the North Cascades - one of the wildest, most biologically diverse landscapes in North America. “From the tidewaters of Puget Sound to ancient forests and alpine glaciers to the sagebrush desert of the Columbia River Basin, we have served more than 60,000 children and adults in:
  • Natural history seminars
  • School programs and summer youth camps
  • Teacher workshops and internships
A number of key factors should be considered in the success of the North Cascade Institute, including:
These include:
  • It began with a limited offering of 23 programs in its first year, presented by scientists recognized in their fields.
  • It started by building a strong collaborative relationship with the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service and has maintained this relationship for more than 16 years.
